PneumaticConveying is a natural extension of our airmanagement capabilities and a natural choice formoving dry solids efficiently through your plant.

For all of this equipment, we manufacture andstock replacement parts and maintenance itemsto keep our equipment and equipment made byother manufacturers running efficiently, productively, and safely.

Fabric Collector Basics

You can expect most well-designed and properlymaintained fabric collectors to operate at 99%efficiency or even slightly higher – measured bythe ratio between the weight of material collectedand the weight of material that escapes. Lesserperformance is frequently a result of by-pass dueto damaged fabric, faulty seals, or sheet metalleaks, rather than actual penetration of the fabric.

AIRLANCO will issue emission guarantees as lowas 0.02 grains per dry standard cubic foot of airunder certain conditions. For many woodapplications, emissions guarantees may be as lowas 0.0022 grains per dry standard cubic foot.Specialty filter media that can meet typicalemission levels are…

1. PTFE membrane laminates can meet 0.0025 grains/dscf.2. P84 and composites can meet 0.005 grains/dscf.3. Multi-denier polyester can meet 0.015 grains/dscf.

Fabric collectors are sized to provide sufficient filtermedia area to allow operation without excessivepressure drop. The amount of filter area requireddepends on many factors:

1. Release characteristics of the dust.2. Porosity of the dust cake.3. Concentration of the dust in the gas stream.4. Type of fabric and surface finish.5. Type of cleaning mechanism.6. Cleaning interval.7. Airflow pattern in the filter.8. Temperature and humidity of the gas stream.

We handle the intricacies of filter sizing and mediaselection, unless you want to provide your ownspecifications. In rare cases, a pilot installation maybe required to evaluate unusual applications. At AIRLANCO, we bring decades of experience toyour project to give you the results you want.

Filter Media Basics

Reliable filtration of process air prevents aircontamination and/or loss of a valuable product.Choosing the right filter media is one of the bestways to ensure reliable filtration.

Common filter media may be made from eithernatural fibers such as cotton or wool or syntheticfibers such as polyesters, acrylics, nylons, variousblends, or glass fibers. Exotic media such asceramics or felted metals may be required in someextreme applications. For all practical purposes, natural fiber media are no longer used, so we willexamine only common synthetic fiber media.

Needled felt fabric is probably the most typicalmedia construction now in use for bag-type filters. It may be either supported or unsupported.Supported felt includes a scrim layer of light wovenfabric sandwiched between layers of felt to improvethe fabric’s dimensional stability and tear resistance.Fabrics are specified by weight, either in ouncesper square yard or in grams per square meter.

Cartridge filters may be assembled using a varietyof media. We recommend AIRLANCO “SpunBonded” polyester media. These fabrics areavailable in plain finish or with a variety of surfacefinishes or treatments for special applications.

Micron: A unit of length, the 1/1000 part of1 mm, or the millionth part of a meter(approximately 1/25000 of an inch).

Pressure, Atmospheric: The pressure due to theweight of the atmosphere. It is the pressureindicated by a barometer. Standard AtmosphericPressure or Standard Atmosphere is the pressureof 29.92 inches of mercury.

Pressure, Static: The potential pressure exerted inall directions by a fluid at rest. For a fluid inmotion it is measured in a direction normal to thedirection of flow. Usually expressed in incheswater gauge when dealing with air.

Pressure, Total: The algebraic sum of the velocitypressure and the static pressure.

Pressure, Velocity: The kinetic pressure in thedirection of flow necessary to cause a fluid at restto flow at a given velocity. Usually expressed ininches water gauge.

Pulse Cycle: On a pulse jet bag house, theinterval of time between one pulsing of a row ofbags and the next pulsing of the same row.

Pulse Duration (On-Time): The length of time apulse lasts, generally described as the length oftime the electrical signal holds the pilot valveopen.

Pulse Interval (Off-Time): Elapsed time betweenpulses in a pulse jet filter.

SCFM: Standard cubic feet per minute. Thevolume of gas flow per minute at standardtemperature and pressure conditions.

Standard Atmosphere: Condition when air is at14.7 PSIA pressure at 70°F, pressure of 29.92inches of Hg, and relative humidity of 30%.

Temperature, Wet Bulb:Thermodynamic wet-bulbtemperature is the temperatureat which liquid water, byevaporating into air, can bringthe air to saturation, adiabatically,at the same temperature. Wet-bulbtemperature (without qualification)is the temperature indicated by awet-bulb psychrometer constructedand used according to specifications.

Venturi: A cone-shaped device locatedat the top of each filter in pulse jet dustcollectors that compressed air is blownthrough. A negative pressure at the topof the venturi is created to help pulladditional volumes of air into the filterelement during pulsing.

Polyester:Polyester is the most cost effective filter media at lowtemperatures from ambient to a maximum of 275ºF(135ºC). It is available under several proprietarynames and offers good resistance to mostatmospheres at ambient temperatures. Polyester isa condensation polymer and is a thermoplastic. Itis subject to hydrolysis: the molecular breakdownof the fiber when subjected to medium rangetemperature, moisture, and chemistry. As athermoplastic, polyester can be singed, glazed, oreasily bonded to PTFE membrane. Anti-staticelements can be added to dissipate static charges. This treatment helps reduce the potential forexplosions and/or heavy dust cake build-up.

Polypropylene:Polypropylene is best known for its resistanceto moisture. Maximum temperature is limited toonly 190ºF (90ºC). It is resistant to a broad rangeof acids and alkalis. Polypropylene is extremelynon-adhesive, which makes it very easy to cleanand a good choice for sticky, adhesive dusts.Filters equipped with polypropylene seldom havea large differential pressure from dust build-up.Polypropylene is damaged by oxidizing agents, copper, and related salts.

Acrylics:Homo-Acrylics offer good hydrolytic resistancewhen temperatures are kept below 260ºF(127ºC). They also provide good resistance toorganic and mineral acids, organic solvents, andoxidizing agents. Homo-polymer acrylics, suchas Dralon T®, are typically recommended ininstallations where polyester fabrics have failedfrom hydrolysis. Note that regular acrylic fabricdoes not resist hydrolysis and should not besubstituted in filtration applications.

Nomex:Nomex is a commonly used fiber for dry heatapplications up to 400ºF (204ºC). It will begin tohydrolyze at 375ºF (190.6ºC) when the relativehumidity is 10% or greater. The presence of acidswill catalyze the hydrolysis process. Unacceptablyshort bag life will result where SOx and moistureare present and frequent dew-point excursionsoccur. Nomex is not a thermoplastic and cannotbe glazed, but it can be singed using specialtechniques. Nomex can be finished with a PTFEmembrane if it is first treated with Teflon B toachieve a proper bond.

P-84:P-84 is a polyamide fiber with avery high temperature resistance. It withstands up to 460ºF (237.8ºC)continuous and excursions to 500ºF(260ºC). P-84 is a condensationpolymer and is subject to hydrolysisat elevated temperatures. The tri-lobalfiber shape gives P-84 a larger surfacearea, which makes it a very efficient filterfabric. P-84 is not available in a largevariety of finishes and must be treatedwith Teflon B to bond a PTFE membrane.

Ryton:Ryton is a relatively high-temperaturesynthetic fiber that will operate at 375ºF(190.6ºC) continuously with excursions to425ºF (218.3ºC). It is chemically resistant to a broad range of acids, alkalis, and oxidizingagents. It will hydrolyze, but only attemperatures above 375ºF (190.6ºC), so that it replaces Nomex under these conditions.Ryton has a low rate of moisture absorption likePolypropylene, except at higher temperatures.Ryton is a thermoplastic and can be singed, glazed, and easily bonded to PTFE membrane.

Teflon® (PTFE):Teflon® is available in either felt produced incombination with staple glass fibers or as a wovenfabric. PTFE is unique in its ability to resist chemicalattack across the entire pH range throughout itsoperating temperature range. It is non-adhesive, haszero moisture absorption, and is unaffected bymildew or ultraviolet light. The primary shortcomingsof PTFE are its poor abrasion resistance andrelatively high cost. Often, the higher cost can beoffset through longer life in extreme corrosiveconditions. Special coating is required to bond PTFEmembrane to woven or felted PTFE fabric.

Finishes:

Finishes are mechanically applied surface treatmentsthat generally improve dust cake formation on themedia and enhance filter cleaning.

Plain: The natural surface of the felt after it has beenheat set. The surface has a natural softness attributed tothe open fibers, which aid in the capture of fineparticulates. They also hold the dust cake, possiblyretarding good cake release.

Singed: Plain finished felt is passed through an opengas oven where the surface fibers are melted into“mushroom caps”. This is the most basic finish to assistin the release of dust cake under demanding conditions.

Eggshell: This finish is similar to a singed treatment, except that pressure is applied to produce asmoother surface.

Glazed: This is not a popular finish becausepermeability (airflow) is restricted. To achieve the glazedfinish, plain finished felt is subjected to high temperatureand pressure over calender rolls to smooth the surfaceby melting and pressing the surface fibers. This finishcreates an excellent surface for cake release.

Calendered: Needled felt is compressed between tworollers increasing the felt’s density.

Membrane: An expanded layer of PTFE is laminated tothe fabric surface, which makes it easier to clean stickyor very fine dust from the fabric and reduces therequired cleaning cycle frequency. In the process ofmanufacturing the PTFE membrane, microscopic holesare opened in the membrane that permit the passageof gasses but not particulate.

Foam Coatings:

Acrylic Foam: This is a coating of porous acrylic foamthat is applied to the felt surface to simulate an instantdust cake. By effective control of the foam cell bubblestructure, a very uniform pore structure is applied to thefelt surface. The benefits of this type of coating includeimproved filtration on the felt surface as well asimproved filtration efficiencies without incurringincreased differential pressure.

Polyurethane Foam: This is a coating applied in thesame way as the acrylic coating and features similarperformance enhancements. However, the polyurethanecoating also provides improved temperature resistanceand coating toughness.

PTFE Foam: This is a micro-porous surface coating of aPTFE-based foamable resin. The PTFE coating impartstwo distinct advantages. First, the coating improves thesurface filtration efficiency, and second, the PTFE resinreduces cake build up of agglomerating, stronglyadhesive tacky dusts.

Treatments:

A variety of chemical treatments can be applied to feltmedia that can improve felt’s performance, efficiency, and life expectancy. Treatments can be applied either byimpregnating or by coating, or by a combination of both.

HCE: Immersing the fabric in a noncuring silicone baththat impregnates the fabric so that the media is tackyand easily forms a dust cake.

ARN-1: Created by adding an acid-resistant treatment toNomex to protect it from sulfuric acid in flue gas.

Oleophobic/Hydrophobic: This treatment is applied toimpart some oil or water repellence to the filter media.Every fiber is treated with a fluorocarbon-based resinthat assists in releasing a wet, oily, or sticky dust cakeduring cleaning. This treatment also provides somechemical resistance in applications where there is ahigh risk of hydrolysis.

Silicone: Silicone impregnation considerably reducesany cake cleaning problems associated with sticky, agglomerating dusts. Silicone treatment is usually lessexpensive than fluorocarbon treatments.

Acid Resistance: This is an impregnation treatment thatcoats every fiber with a chemically inert fluoropolymerresin that retards destructive chemical attack.

Flame Retardant: This is an impregnation treatment toprotect against hot particles.

Anti-Static: Anti-static is an impregnation treatmentthat covers the fibers with an anti-static resin systemthat neutralizes the charge on the felt and reducesthe tendency of the charged particles to adhere tothe felt. The anti-static treatment can significantlyimprove bag cleaning.

Efficiencies

Higher in price. If vacuumingand reusing is achievedoverall cost is less thanpaper.

Very difficult to clean eitherby vacuuming or by washing.Though difficult, cleaning canbe accomplished 1 or 2times before replacing.Drying the felt can bedifficult.

High dust holding capacity.Spent cartridge weight isheavy.

One-fourth the surface areaneeded to be the same aspaper. 2 or 3 times the totalweight of any cartridgebecause of constructionneeded to support the felt.

Stronger than paper and willaccept moisture. If bypassingoccurs, it could be due tosmall holes that couldeventually be covered bycontaminant.

Depth loads – difficult topulse clean on most dusts.Requires high pulse pressure.

Because of the surface fiberof the felt, particles do notrelease and are held by thefiber. Harder pulsing isrequired. Felt will have rapidpressure loss tendency.

Media efficiencies limit thenumber of applicationswhere felt can be used.

Moderate initial cost. Lowestoverall cost. Nearly unlimitedability to be cleaned.

Spun bond media are soeasy to clean even powdercoating cartridges work likenew with simple soap andwater cleaning.

Low dust-holding capacity.Spent cartridge weight islight. A paper filter in powdercoating holds 25 pounds ofexpensive reclaimablepowder when change-outoccurs. Spun bond filtersretain 2-3 pounds.

Only one-fourth the surfacearea needed compared topaper because the media isself-supporting. Wide spacedpleats promote easy pulsecleaning.

3 to 5 times stronger thanpaper. Much stronger thanfelt. Will not distort like feltwhen cleaned. High abrasionresistance.

Face loads – wide spacedpleats easiest to pulse clean.Requires low pulse pressure, but more pulse frequency. Will function when wet.

When used on friendly dusts, can match pressure drop ofpaper cartridge with morefrequent pulsing. With difficultdusts, has best ability to becleaned with the lowestpressure drop.

When different sq. ft. of high-efficiency media is utilized, there can be nearly limitlessapplications. Only limited by200ºF (93ºC) for normalconstruction and 275ºF (135ºC)for special construction.

Lowest initial cost. Higheroverall cost. Sometimeswashable.

Although paper claims to bewashable, it will lose strengthand should not be cleaned. Paper loses 25% of dirt-holding capacity after firstcleaning and 10% more aftereach additional cleaning.

High dust holding capacity.Spent cartridge weight isheavy.

Paper requires 4 times thesurface area of felt. Requiresclose spaced pleats making itdifficult to pulse clean – thedust packs too tightlybetween pleats.

Paper will rip and tear whenwet and usually pleats willsplit, opening a large area forbypassing. Low abrasionresistance.

Depth loads – packsbetween pleats. Difficult topulse clean on many dusts.Requires high pulse pressure, but reduced pulse frequency.

When used on friendly dusts, has lowest pressure dropbecause of high dust holdingcapacity. But difficult dustsmay not clean – resulting inuncontrollably high-pressureloss.

A variety of efficiencies areavailable with paper, butwith many limitations ontheir application.

Sight Glasses

Our Sight Glasses feature a smooth straight-thru designthat eliminates turbulence and a large sighting sectionthat lets you directly observe material flow. Clear acrylicsight glass is standard. Pyrex is available on request. These sight glasses come in a wide range of sizes witheither aluminum or steel ends and with a permanentlyattached grounding strip to prevent static electricity build-up. They install easily and quickly and provide an air-tightseal in pneumatic conveying lines.

Inlet & Outlet Silencers

AIRLANCO Inlet and Outlet Silencers reduce PD blowernoise as well as pulsations in the air stream. We offer bothmulti-chambered reactive-type silencers for intakes anddischarges on low-speed rotary positive blowers andcombination absorptive/multi-chamber silencers for intakesand discharges of most rotary positive blowers operatingabove blower transition speeds.

The type of silencer required isdetermined by the blower RPM beingbelow or above its transition speed. The transition speed is the peripheralvelocity of the timing gear at which thepredominant blower noise shifts from low to highfrequency. AIRLANCOwill select and size the silencers for your installation.

Inlet Filter Elements

AIRLANCO polyester replacement Inlet Filter Elements are99% efficient to 5 micron particle size and have atemperature range from -15º F to +220º F. The Filter’spleated media has a high dirt holding capacity and theincluded polyurethane prefilter boosts the Inlet Filter’soverall dust loading capacity by 40 to 50% for reducedmaintenance. The Filters are reinforced with epoxy-coatedwire for enhanced durability and can be washed withlukewarm water and mild detergent.

GSight Glasses
