Our January Speaker
Mike Smith
Mike Smith is the nation’s leading expert in severe weather and one of
America’s most honored atmospheric scientists.
Mike knew he would be a meteorologist at the age of five when a ma-
jor tornado occurred in his neighborhood. After receiving his meteor-
ology degree from the University of Oklahoma, he worked as a televi-
sion meteorologist in St. Louis, Oklahoma City and Wichita and is the
first person to ever do a live telecast of a tornado.
He has received 20 patents in the fields of weather science, emergency management and search
and rescue. A Fellow of the American Meteorology Society, he has received their award for
Outstanding Contribution to the Advance of Applied Meteorology and twice, their award for
Outstanding Service to Meteorology by a Corporation. Mike has been nominated for the CNN
Hero of The Year Award for 2012.
Mike founded WeatherData over 30 years ago and in 2006; he sold WeatherData to Ac-
cuWeather and the new resulting company, AccuWeather Enterprise Solutions which is the
leading company in the field of weather risk mitigation. Mike is the Senior Vice president of
AccuWeather Enterprise Solutions.
In addition to his work at AccuWeather, he is a frequent speaker and author of both popular and
technical weather-related topics. He has appeared on The Discovery Channel, The History
Channel, CBS Evening News, Fox News, BBC World News and NPR. Mike has also been fea-
tured in The Washington Post, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Houston
Chronicle, The Huffington Post, USA Today and in Rolling Stone Magazine.
Mike’s first book, WARNINGS: The True Story of How Science Tamed the Weather is about
some of the most massive storms of our lifetime and the book holds a 5-Star rating on Amazon.
His second book, When the Sirens Were Silent is the gripping story of the deadliest tornado to
hit in 65 years striking Joplin, Missouri killing 161 people.
Mike lives in Wichita and is married with three grown children.

It’s hard to believe that another year is coming to an end. This time of the year is always the time to reflect on all that has been done over the past 12 months and to also look to the future for what 2016 holds. At APICS Wichita we’ve had a great start to the year. We’ve rolled out a new website which I hope you have checked out and would welcome your feedback on. We’ve also had two fantastic speakers at our PDM’s, Sharon Rice APICS Corporate and Wendy Wheeler Koch Industries, and also two great tours, Cargill R & D and ASTEC testing facilities . My takeaways from all these activities is that APICS is now much more than just a society for operations professionals. We truly
cover the end to end supply chain and not just from a technical and tactical perspective but we are talking about the culture and structure of our organizations and our increasing influence on the strategy at our prospective companies.
I have seen a lot of news lately talking critically about education and specifically higher education and its value in the marketplace. One thing I hear consistently is the rising value of certifications. More and more companies are putting more emphasis on hiring people who fit their culture over their specific skills and education. Certifications are a great way to fill the knowledge gap and we want to be the source that they look for to help them develop their people. The future is bright for supply chain professionals, as demand for our abilities increases I encourage you to continue educating yourself wherever possible so that you are prepared and can be successful in an ever changing world. I want to wish you and yours a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
Best regards,
Chad Molen
