From the Editor...

Today is International Women’s Day!

Dear Readers,

Last night the world watched as Kathryn Big-elow created history, by becoming the first fe-male to win Best Director at the Oscars. Today, March 8, is International Women’s Day and her win could not have come at a better time. Under the theme, Equal Rights, Equal Opportu-nities: Progress for All, today marks the 100th

anniversary of the occasion.

Every year, International Women’s Day seeks to inspire women worldwide, while highlighting our many accomplishments. It originally started because of the determination of women who campaigned for better wages, the right to vote and an end to discrimination. Put simply, it’s a time for women everywhere to celebrate being

a woman.

As we chart our course in life, let us never for-get the sacrifices made by those great women long ago, who helped to ensure that we enjoy the freedoms we do today. Respect yourself, never limit your ability to do great things and

always strive to be a woman of worth.

-K. Arnold

oised, creative and a definite go-getter, Teasea Ben-nett is one half of the dynamic brother-sister team behind Rêve Jewellery and Accessories. Rêve is a French word which means dream, and this talented duo is certainly living their dream, by creating high

quality and unique fashion accessories.

“Our slogan ‘Fashion had a genesis, behold the revelation’ is the essence that describes what the company’s mission and vision is about,” Bennett said. “We are creating unique pieces

and helping people to be bold with fashion. No two pieces are the same, so Rêve differentiates you from everyone else.”

Established in 2006, Rêve provides creatively designed jewel-lery made form authentic Jamaican products, including coral, calabash, john crow beads, Jade and gold. “We understand that people have choices, so excellent cus-tomer service is something we pride ourselves on. We make people feel appreciated and this sets our brand apart,” Ben-nett said.

Realising the importance of pursuing one’s dreams, Bennett is focused on developing not only the company, but also herself. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Tourism, has worked in Europe, speaks fluent French and is a trained chef. Her ultimate goal in life is simple, yet speaks volumes about the nature of her personality. “I want to be happy and have a positive impact on my community and my society on a whole,” she said. “I not only want to build myself but oth-ers.”

Bennett holds the title of director of marketing, sales and public relations and her plans for the company are endless. “I have big dreams. I invite everyone to pay attention and see. We believe that everything is achievable. We thank God ev-eryday for the positivity and love that’s around us,” she said.

With their main showroom being at Devon House in Kings-ton, the company currently distributes in both airports, the Hilton Hotel and Morgan’s Harbour Hotel, in addition to St.

Croix in the US Virgin Islands. Focusing on developing local talent, the company also distributes the work of other tal-ented Jamaican designers. Harts in Irits, Katrina, Kima, Me-gan Allison, Nanny of the Maroons and Crystal Stone, are some of the many designers that are available at their Devon House location.

Being an entrepreneur comes with its challenges, and Bennett believes the will to be one’s own boss is innate. She advises young talents to just do it, as the popular brand Nike says.

“The greatest thing is doing what you love and being reward-ed for it. I have the blessings of God, supportive family and friends, so I can be fearless to live and do what my heart desires,” she said.

She is currently engrossed in the Little Red Book of Selling by Jeffrey Gitomer and says she is motivated by her loved ones. “Family and friends are very dear to me,” she said. In her downtime you can find her outdoors. “I love animals, out-door activities, hanging with friends; I love reading and doing yoga.”

t has to be some sort of game, something hard wired into the DNA of males and females since we crawled out of the primordial ooze or God made the world, whatever your take on that is. The game that I speak of can be likened to one that most of us are familiar with, Charades. A more fitting name could not be found in the presence of a sartorialist.

Charades is what I like to refer to as the process of the pur-suit of a romantic involvement with another human being, in most cases the pursuer being the male counterpart. Why ‘Charades”? Well it’s simple, most men and women have a completely different persona that is designed to attract mem-bers of the opposite sex. Depending on the relative skill and competence of the players in the game, this polymorphic im-age can adapt to fit any situation and is only partly shed when both parties become comfortable enough to turn off the im-age modifier.

“Be yourself ”... Sure, if “yourself ” has the charisma of Clive

Owen, the effortless style of Denzel Washington and oozes the self-confidence of Russell Brand. Otherwise, grab that image modifier and suit up and prepare for the ride of your lives young ‘uns. We all know that the person that sidles up to the bar, and impresses all of your friends with an adorable anecdote about a tire iron and banana pudding, is not quite the same guy around his male friends. But, yet we buy into the charades because we know it is good enough for now, and we hope that whoever is behind the mask is still cool enough to hopefully extend the human experiment with.

Is the charade necessary? You bet your sweet Aunt Fanny’s lost Lotto ticket it is. We humans are so intricately unique in our mental and emotional make up that it is necessary to find that homogenous mix that will serve its purpose for the time that it was meant to do just that. Who has time to work out daddy issues and self love questions over a drink at Suzie’s? The time from initial meeting to actual progression can be a treacherous span where a wrong statement sets off alarms that will never really be quieted. Our image modifier helps us to ease into people’s lives with as little friction as possible, so by the time the heavy stuff gets put on the table, hopefully the sex will be good enough to serve as impetus to work that out.

So let’s get the kinks out of that modifier, you never know when you might be on call.

Yesterday I CriedFilled with insights about overcoming difficult times, Yesterday I Cried is an important guide to celebrating the lessons of living and loving.

esterday I Cried. I came home, went straight to my room, sat on the edge of my bed, kicked off my shoes, unhooked my bra, and had myself a good cry.” In this book, you’ll learn that it is OK to cry. It’s OK to cry for lost opportunities, to cry for

mistakes made, to cry for the person you were and to cry for who you want to become. Most importantly, you’ll learn that each tear contains a seed of healing.

Iyanla Vanzant is a woman who knows struggles. She knows exactly what it means to be sexually, physically and emotion-ally abused, to live with self-loathing and to be on the brink of giving up on it all. Undoubtedly, she has had a difficult life; one filled with disappointments, challenges and pain, but through it all, she has learned how to celebrate the lessons of living and loving.

A New York Times bestseller, Yesterday I Cried, is an en-gaging autobiography, which speaks to the scared, neglected and broken child in every woman. It shows that through re-silience, determination and an indomitable will, we can rise above our situations and achieve our purpose. Vanzant does this by moving from being on welfare to becoming a lawyer, author and spiritual advisor. She has had many roadblocks in life, but never lost sight of her spirituality, which she relies on to keep her going despite her situation.

Yesterday I Cried, provides an honest and candid descrip-tion of Vanzant’s struggles, and she shares openly about abuse as a child, be-ing a single mother, and hating herself so much that she al-lows people to treat her badly, because she had no idea she deserved better.

It is a must-read for women everywhere who have been walking around with emotional wounds that are still open and painfully sore. At the end, you will be one step closer towards healing those sores. Her experiences will help you realise that you should never give up, no matter how insur-mountable life’s obstacles may seem, or how desperately you are fighting to weather devastating disasters.

The message of self-discovery throughout the book is a defi-nite inspiration to every woman who wants to remove the layer of filth caused by life’s crap, in order to find the jewel, the light, the purpose in her.

Iyanla Vanzant is a woman who knows struggles. She knows exactly what it means to be sexually, physically and emotionally abused, to live with self-loathing and to be on the brink of giving up on it all.
