Do you know all the planets of the solar system?

R I D D L E

3.Your last step before the « Planets Trail »

To access the Planets Trail, you must take the St-Luc funicular railway. Indicative rates for a return journey : adult : CHF 16.00, child : CHF 13.50

At the top of the funicular, follow signs for the footpath to « Hôtel Weisshorn ».

Start your adventure with the first star, « The Sun ».

Walk all the way to Pluto

Follow this footpath through our solar system. As the distances between the planets have been scaled down to a billionth of their size, every meter (each of your steps) represents a million kilometers.

You will therefore complete the journey in just 6 km (one way), three times faster than the speed of light!

To improve visibility, the stars are shown at a scale of 1 m = 100 000 km.

· Walking time : around 5 hours· Difficulty level : easy· Height difference : 500 m· Distance : 6 km (one way) – 12km (return)· Season : May to October

THE SUN MERCURY

The Sun

· The center of the solar system. Without the Sun, temperatures on Earth would approach absolute zero (-273,15 °C).

· If the Sun were to be extinguished, we would have eight minutes before being plunged into total darkness.

· The Sun should keep shining for another five billion years.

· This planet is only visible to the naked eye very low on the horizon in the west, just after sunset, and in the east a few moments before sunrise.

· We had to wait for photographs taken by the Mariner 10 space probe (in 1974) to discover Mercury’s landscapes, which are very similar to those found on the Moon.

SOLEILVENUS

Venus

· Earth’s twin sister. They have the same diameter, the same mass and both have an atmosphere.

· However they have had dramatically different fates : at present, Venus has no water and temperatures there reach 500 °C.

· We are the first generations of human beings to have had the privilege of seeing planet Earth all at once in a single glance. Astronauts who haveviewed it from space describe it as a Christmas tree decoration, a dazzling blue and white jewel.

· The Moon is the Earth’s natural satellite. Man’s first steps on the moonwere taken on 20 July 1969 by Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins and Buzz Aldrin, the crew of Apollo 11.

MARS

Mars

· Seked-ef-em-khetkhet – the one who travels backwards – was the name given to Mars by the Ancient Egyptians. When overtaken by Earth, this planet really does seem to be tracing a reverse loop in the sky.

· For a long time, Mars has been the focus of our hopes of finding extraterrestrial life. However, despite much observation and exploration, no signs of life have ever been discovered on the planet.

· Jupiter signals the start of the gasgiants. This group of planets has a much lower density, and it’s members are in all likelihood made up of liquid hydrogen, possibly with a metallic hydrogen core, covered by a thick atmosphere.

· Its name, that of the king of the gods in Roman mythology, places Jupiter at the top of the hierarchy of the celestial bodies. And indeed it is the largest planet and has the highest volume, even though there was no way of knowing this in ancient times!

· When it passed close to Jupiter in 1979, the Voyager space probe revealed aworld of colours whirling and swirling together.

URANUSSATURN

Saturn

· Saturn is essentially an enormous ball of gas, compressed by it’s own weight. It is the least dense planet in the solar system (0,7 kg/l). In fact it is so « light » that if it were placed in an ocean of cosmic proportions, it would float.

· When Galileo observed Saturn with his telescope in 1610, it’s rings looked to him like two protrusions. It was Huygens in 1655 who first described the spectacular system of rings encircling the planet.

· The halo surrounding Saturn has a very complex structure. It is made up of a large number of « rocks » orbiting at varying speeds, with those closest to the planet moving the fastest.

· One evening in 1781, Friedrich Wilhelm Herschel caught sight of a strange, diffuse object which he knew was not a star. At first he thought it was a comet, but further observation revealed that it is was in fact a planet which had not yet been discovered!

· Uranus is a thousand times fainter than Jupiter, almost two-and-a-half times smaller and twice as far from the Sun as Saturn, making it barely visible to the naked eye. Even with the aid of a powerful terrestrial telescope, this star looks like a small, greenish disc with no distinguishing features.

NEPTUNE PLUTO

Neptune

· Although it is three times smaller than Jupiter, Neptune is considered a gas giant. When viewed through a telescope, this planet looks a lot like Uranus : it too appears to be a small blue-green disc. This is due to the presence of methane in the atmosphere, which mainly absorbs red and infrared light.

· Pluto is located on the outer reaches of the solar system and as such, has only had time to complete five revolutions of the Sun since being discovered in 1930.This enigmatic star, which is not always granted the status of planet, is slowly but surely revealing its secrets.

· Since 2006, Pluto has no longer been recognized as a planet, meaning that Neptune now represents the end of the solar system.
