With the arrival of colder tem-peratures, the Government of Saskatchewan reminds every-one to make sure that ice is safe and thick enough before walking or driving on it. Ice thickness depends on the particular water-body and the local conditions. It does not freeze at a uniform thickness and ice strength can vary considerably from one area to another.
To be sure, check the ice thick-ness before you travel on it. As a guideline, you need at least 10 cm (four inches) of ice to walk on, 20 cm (eight inches) to drive a snow-mobile or ATV on, 30 cm (12 inch-es) to drive a car or light truck on, and more than 30 cm (12 inches) to support a heavy truck.
Be aware that any activity on ice has risks. Guidelines are provid-ed to help individuals make a decision about whether to ven-ture on to the ice. Thickness is just one consideration when eval-uating ice safety. Clear, hard ice is the only ice recommended for travel.
Also avoid ice that:• looks slushy;• has thawed, then frozen again; is near moving water;• is layered, caused by sudden
temperature changes; or• has structures on it, such as

In comparison to lake ice, river ice is often more hazardous and inconsistent, particularly down-stream of dams when winter releases are being made. The Water Security Agency is cur-rently releasing water from Grant Devine lake on Moose Mountain Creek and reid lake on Swift Current Creek. There is also flow throughout the Qu’Appelle and Saskatchewan river systems. These flows would impact the formation the ice covers and these areas should be avoided as conditions can change sig-nificantly over short distances.

The teacher of the Earth Science class was lecturing on map reading.He spent the class explaining about
latitude, longitude, degrees, and minutes. Towards the end of class,
the teacher asked his students, “Suppose I asked you to meet me for lunch at 23 degrees, 4 minutes north latitude and 45 degrees, 15 minutes
east longitude...”A student’s voice broke the confused
silence, and volunteered, “I guess you’d be eating alone, sir.”
This past Christmas, I told my girlfriend for months in
advance, Baby, all I want from you this year is an Xbox. Thats it. Beginning and end of list: Xbox. You know what she got me? A homemade frame with a picture of us from our first
date together. Which was fine -- because I got her an Xbox.

Boating in the fall offers colourful vistas, quiet anchorages and excellent fishing but it is not without its challenges that necessitate self-sufficiency and taking some addition-al precautions to keep from running into trouble. The Canadian Safe Boating Council (CSBC) and the Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation want to remind all boaters en-joying the fall season on the water to follow these tips to ensure that their excursions are both safe and enjoyable. Before heading out, be sure to check the weather forecast. The mixing of warm and cold air can quickly spawn high winds and waves making it treacherous for small boats. Fog, too, is an issue at this time of year making visibility difficult. Should boaters find themselves in a fog bank, they should proceed slowly and sound their horn at regular intervals to alert other boat-ers of their presence. Well into October, daytime temperatures can occasionally be balmy but dressing for the water temperature will help slow the onset of hypothermia should the unexpect-ed happen and the boater find himself in the water. Accidental cold water immer-sion can be shocking, but they shouldn’t panic. It may take a minute or so to get their breathing under control after the initial shock but they will have at least 10-
