Mounties seek Prairie Paving scaMMers
cbc.ca - the Mounties are warning people on the Prairies about travelling pavers who may be running an asphalt scam.
seven people from alberta, saskatchewan and Manitoba have fallen victim to the alleged scam, the rcMP said tuesday in a news release.
over the last month or two, a group of men has been going door-to-door in different communities, saying they represent a paving company which has leftover asphalt from a nearby job.
they then offer paving services at a reduced rate, the rcMP said.
they do a portion of the work, and then get the victim to give them a large portion of the agreed price. they say they will be back the next day to finish the job but do not return.
one of the suspects, whom witnesses said identified himself as “Pat,” is described as around 50 years old, five feet, eight inches tall, weighing 175 pounds and with light brown hair.
Witnesses told rcMP the man and an accomplice spoke with irish accents.
the suspects were last seen traveling in a White Dodge ram truck which is believed to have been stolen.
the rcMP’s White Butte detachment, headquartered in emerald Park east of regina, is investigating one of the latest complaints.
Police are asking people with information to contact the nearest rcMP detachment or, if they wish to remain anonymous, to call saskatchewan crime stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

autoPsies to Be conDucteD on 2 neW BrunsWick Boys strangleD By Python
ctv.ca -autopsies on the bodies of two young new Brunswick brothers who were strangled in their sleep by a giant python will be performed in saint John on tuesday.
Police have yet to say if any charges will be laid in the tragic deaths, which experts have described as extremely rare.
“i have 23 years of service, and i’ve never been involved in such a terrible story,” rcMP sgt. alain tremblay said.
two young boys sleeping at a friend’s apartment are dead after they were strangled by a python that had escaped its enclosure in new Brunswick on Monday, aug. 5, 2013.
royal canadian Mounted Police work at the scene of a fatal python attack at reptile ocean exotic pet store in campbellton, n.B. on Monday aug. 5, 2013. (the canadian Press)
tremblay told ctv news channel that the 15-foot african rock python escaped from its enclosure in a campbellton, n.B. exotic animal store and travelled through the building’s ventilation system.
the snake, which police said weighed approximately 100 pounds, fell through the roof of an apartment located on top of reptile ocean and strangled the two brothers, who were sleeping over a friend’s home at the time.
the boys were found dead shortly after 6:30 a.m. Monday.
various reports identified the brothers as noah Barthe, 5, and connor Barthe, 7.
tremblay said bodies of the two boys were discovered by the owner of the reptile store, who lives in the apartment with his son. Jean-claude savoie said he managed to trap the snake in a cage before calling police.
“We are treating that scene as a crime scene like any other crime scene,” tremblay said, adding that investigators will be looking at video to determine how the python escaped its cage.
the snake will likely be put down, ctv’s atlantic Bureau chief todd Battis reported.
“it’s perfectly legal to own these snakes,” Battis told ctv’s canada aM. “there are tens of thousands of them in homes, zoos, and shops across north america.”
Most provinces do not have laws controlling exotic animals; rather, owners are subject to whatever city bylaws are in place where they live.
Battis said in the last 20 years, there haven’t been any reported cases of snake strangulations in canada.
experts say fatal snake attacks on humans are extremely rare.
Bry loyst, curator of ontario’s indian river reptile Zoo, told ctvnews.ca that the python may have mistaken the boys for food, explaining that snakes don’t intentionally attack humans.

With a time of six days and 7½ hours, two Canadian pilots have broken the world record for an around-the-globe flight by a single-engine plane. Don Muir, 26, and André Daemon, 22, shaved more than 28 hours off the previ-ous record. A crowd at Montreal’s Dorval airport cheers as their Cessna 210 touches down and camera operators jostle to take the first photograph of the triumphant team in this CBC Television report.• Don Muir and André Daemon completed their journey in their plane -- The Wings of Life -- in six days, seven hours, 25 minutes and 47 seconds. They travelled 36,500 kilometres. • Muir, a bush pilot from Sioux Lookout, Ont., and Daemon, a flight instructor from Montreal, carried several good luck charms with them on their histor-ic journey. Each pilot wore a St. Christopher medal (the patron saint of safe travel). They also packed a Bible in their survival kit and fixed a small statue of Snoopy -- the Red Baron -- above their radio. • By the time they completed their flight, Muir and Daemon had raised $150,000 for the Canadian Cancer Society (this clip reports $100,000 donated to that point.) • “We never worried about not making it. The wind was in our favour and flying was incredibly smooth,” Daemon told the Toronto Star after the flight. (Aug. 8, 1982) • Muir and Daemon made pit stops in St. John’s; Shannon, Ireland; Naples, Italy; Cairo; Bahrain; Bombay; Madras; Kuala Lumpur; Manila; Guam; Majuro; Honolulu; San Francisco; Denver and Chicago. • On their journey, the pilots subsisted on a diet of sandwiches, peanut butter, cookies, V-8 juice, apple juice and spring water. • The previous record was set by Seattle lawyer Robert Muckleston in 1978. • As of June 2006, Muir and Daemon’s record still stands as authenticated by the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale.
ALSo oN AuguSt 7:• 1950: The federal cabinet decides 5,000 Canadian soldiers will serve with the United Nations forces in Korea. Prime Minister St-Laurent makes the an-nouncement on a national radio broadcast.• 1979: Jacques and Louise Cossette-Trudel are sentenced to two years less a day for their part in the October 1970 FLQ kidnapping of British trade com-missioner James Cross in Montreal.• 1997: Bjarni Tryggvason becomes the seventh Canadian in space when the shuttle Discovery lifts off. Tryggvason performs various experiments during his 11-day, 20-hour mission as a payload specialist.

At 85 years of age, Morris marries Lou Anne. A lovely 25 year old. Since her new husband is so old, Lou Anne decides that after their wedding she and Morris should have separate bedrooms, because she is concerned that her new, but aged husband may overexert himself if they spend the entire night together. After the wedding festivities Lou Anne prepares herself for bed, and the expected “knock” on the door. Sure enough, the knock comes; the door opens and there is Morris, her 85 year old groom, ready for “action.” They “unite as one.” All goes well; Morris takes leave of his bride, and she prepares to go to sleep. After a few minutes, Lou Anne hears another knock on her bedroom door, and it’s Morris. Again, he is ready for “action.” Somewhat surprised, but nonetheless willing, Lou Anne consents to more “conjugal bliss.” When the love-birds are done, Morris kisses his bride, bids her a fond goodnight and leaves. She is set to go to sleep again, but Morris is back again, rapping on the door, as fresh as a 25-year old. ready for more passion. Once again, they enjoy one another. But as Morris prepares to leave again, his young bride says to him: “I am thoroughly impressed that at your age you can perform so well and so often. I have been with guys less than a third of your age who were only good once. You are truly a great lover, Morris.” Morris, somewhat embarrassed, turns to Lou Anne and says: “You mean I was here already?”
