I would very much like to hear if you have reached a decision on the publication of this book, which has become extremely topical because of present events in South Africa. An earlier book of mine,THE WORLD THAT WAS OURS, was published by Progress Publishers in 1971 with, I believe, some success.

We recently published a prize-winning novel about the struggle against the apartheid regime in South Africa, Death is Part of the Process. Its author, Hilda Bernstein, is a remarkable woman, a member of the South African Communist Party, who managed to escape during the 1960s with her husband, after they were interrogated and charged with subversion.

Hilda Bernstein's novel is not simply propaganda for a good cause; it is an exciting, horrifying and ultimately deeply optimistic work of literature, which has been very well received by critics here. I enclose some of their comments with this letter. Our feeling is that it deserves the widest circulation, and wonder whether you would like to see a copy with a view to publishing a Russian translation?

The letter was eventually passed on to the publishers, Sinclair-Browne, who at that time held all foreign rights on the book.Patrick Browne, who ran the firm, was in the process of relinquishing his interest in publishing, and in dealing with your enquiry - and others - he rather let things slide. Eventually he returned to me all rights on the book, and at the same time, has passed on to me unanswered correspondence.I now have an agent, IJIarsh and Sheix Ltd, who are handling all foreign rights on the book. I am posting your letter on to them, and have asked them tos send you a copy of the book.As we are now very short of copies, I would be most grateful to you if you would return it to me if you are not interested in publishing it.
