Backlinks What are backlinks? They are incoming hyperlinks “incoming links” from one web page to your website. The more backlinks you have pointing to your site the higher your popularity. The higher your popularity the higher your site is listed on search engines.

Why does it increase your ranking? Because, backlinks are like endorsements from others saying that your content is relevant and worth linking to making it rank higher on search engine results. However, just because one has a high number of backlinks does not make the page necessarily mean the page will automatically rank high.

Wait what? But you just said…. Quality of the links also plays a big factor. Simply having thousands of backlinks or only having a link from one website isn’t going to affect your rank position. Today, the best links come from organic mentions and references.

Things to consider are: use references, authority (data, infographics), resource lists all which can link to an authoritative source. Using video and interactive content that contains closed captioning and linking from platforms such as YouTube. Self-create links from authority sites such as yelp for business, google my business, facebook, BBB, etc.. Page Loading Speed Site loading speeds affect search engine rankings because they take longer for search engines to crawl. Search engines only have a dedicated amount of time to “crawl” search pages for keywords and information. The longer it takes to crawl a site the longer it takes a site to be ranked.

Usability is also affected by page loading speed. The longer it takes for a page to load the faster potential customers will bounce off a site.

Overall site loading speed is slow, and this can be due to server page cashe, also image resolution sizes.

Mobile Friendly The site has a mobile version - however the site it’s self isn’t responsive and there are some screen sizing issues when viewed with different sized browser windows. This can create issues when an actual mobile device is not detected.

Accessibility Report What is accessibility or ADA compliance? Why should a site be accessible?

ADA compliance is – also known as the Accessibility Disabilities Act. Websites need to meet the federally-adopted WCAG 2.0 compliance requirements. In addition to federal regulations, some states are also writing their own legislation requiring digital accessibility compliance. Just as things like wheelchair ramps and accessible bathrooms are required, so is digital compliance.

Why make a site accessible? Accessibility contributes to search engine optimization strategies. It also improves SEO results, as Google knows it means up-to-date, valid code, which it values. And while its robots can’t see images, they can read descriptions which will help them index your site correctly, so making your website accessible makes business sense in more than one way.

Overall Site analysis

The site is very busy and has way too many links. Link names are too long and need to be shortened. Link colors are not contrasting enough and create ADA compliance issues. Images file sizes range from 2-7 megabytes which is extremely large for websites and reduce loading speed considerably. Images need to be optimized for web and should drop down to the 100-200 kilobyte range. All site listings across the web should be consistent and provide the same keywords and links back to main website.

Alternative text Problem: Images Without Text Equivalents. And multiple images with the same alternative text. Images used as links and image description not present.

Why It Matters

Alternative text presents the content or function of an image to screen reader users or in other situations where images cannot be seen or are unavailable. Without text to describe an image such as “click here” a screen reader is unable to read text within an image.



How to Fix It

Ensure that the alternative text conveys the content and function of the image accurately and succinctly. The alt attribute should be equivalent, accurate, and succinct. The words in the tag should be more than a description. They should provide a text equivalent of the image. In other words, the tag should include the same meaningful information that other users obtain by looking at the image. In the example of the mayor’s picture, adding an “alt” tag with the words “Photograph of Mayor Jane Smith” provides a meaningful description.

Documents Not In Accessible Format Problem: PDF documents do not pass accessibility check

Why it Matters

State and local governments will often post documents on their websites using Portable Document Format (PDF). But PDF documents, or those in other image-based formats, are often not accessible to blind people who use screen readers and people with low vision who use text enlargement programs or different color and font settings to read computer displays.

How to Fix It

Always provide documents in an alternative text-based format, such as HTML or RTF (Rich Text Format), in addition to PDF. Text-based formats are the most compatible with assistive technologies. Also if converting from word document ensure that heading styles are used and images have alt tags before saving as pdf.

Missing Form Labels Problem: Forms do not have labels to allow for ease of navigation. Recommendation is to get programmer to properly label form attributes.

What It Means

A form control does not have a corresponding label.

Why It Matters

If a form control does not have a properly associated text label, the function or purpose of that form control may not be presented to screen reader users. Form labels also provide visible descriptions and larger clickable targets for form controls.

Inline Frames and Tables Problem: Inline Frames and tables create loading speed issues and create ADA issues when not properly used.

Why It Matters

The content of an inline frame is read as if it were part of the page that contains it. The content of the iframe must be accessible. A title attribute value for the iframe will generally be read by a screen reader when the iframe is encountered.

How to Fix It

Ensure that the content within the iframe is accessible. Optionally, a title attribute value can be added to provide a brief, advisory description of the iframe.

Website Colors Low Contrast Problem: Very low contrast between foreground and background colors.

Why It Matters

Adequate contrast is necessary for all users, especially users with low vision.

How to Fix It

Increase the contrast between the foreground (text) color and the background color. Large text (larger than 18 point or 14 point bold) does not require as much contrast as smaller text.
