PRIESTS REACH NEW HEIGHTS AT YOUTH FESTIVAL
A priest who has said Mass on Mt Everest and climbed 126 of the world’s highest peaks and X Factor contestant Father Rob Galea are two of the hits of the Australian Catholic Youth Festival taking place in Adelaide this week.
Brisbane priest Fr Morgan Batt serves as a chaplain in the ADF with tours of duty in the Middle East and Timor. He is a recognised international mountaineer, having climbed Mt Everest and five of the seven continental summits and tonight will abseil from a ‘ledge’ in the Adelaide Convention Centre onto the stage in front of 3000 young Catholics.
Maltese-born Fr Rob has been mobbed by young people at his performances during the festival so far. The 33-year-old priest won the praise of the X Factor judges with his performance of 'Don't You Worry Child' By Swedish House Mafia but quit the show after attending “boot camp” because it conflicted with his pastoral commitments.
Other music performers include Aria award-winning and multi-platinum recording artist Gary Pinto, and his wife, Perth-born singer and songwriter Natasha who has toured with Boyz II Men and Pink.
Laura Cassai, runner-up last year in Masterchef, will be at the Caritas Kitchen from 11am to 2pm today with recipes for sustainable meals and promoting the message that about 1 billion people go hungry each day.
Political and sporting identities will take part in panel discussions at 1pm today and an expo called INcounter is providing interactive and engaging experiences which enable young people to connect with the Church in new ways.
