Literacy Now Burnaby

Literacy is much more than reading and writing. It includes the ability to communicate, use technology and participate in society. Improved literacy skills contribute to better health, job opportunities and participation in society. Literacy Now Burnaby is part of a province-wide network of 102 Community Literacy Task Groups supported by a Literacy Outreach Coordinator. The groups are funded and supported by Decoda Literacy Solutions to create awareness of the importance of literacy and to increase local literacy activities through collaborative community planning. The Burnaby Literacy Now committee was formed in 2007 to promote literacy as a foundation for all learning. “Putting the Pieces Together, A Community Literacy Plan for Burnaby” was completed based on extensive community consultation by the committee. Literacy Now Burnaby is committed to building and enhancing literacy services, programs and networks in Burnaby. Key activities include collaboration with community agencies to provide literacy planning and implementation. Literacy Now events and workshops aim to make it easier for community partners to work together to better serve their clients. This directory was produced as a result of the March 14, 2013 Literacy Forum. All community groups and interested individuals are welcome to attend Literacy Now Burnaby meetings and events.
