Members at- tending were Caroline Doud (Anti-bullying Comm Chair), Dakota Hughes (Comm Member), Skyler Rawlings (Comm Member), Matt Clark and Deena Wells. Jane Hayes-Johnk (ISU Extension Specialist) also attended on behalf of the Healthy Living Summit Trip in DC where she accompanied Dakota and Skyler and helped them form a program idea regarding anti-bullying. Dakota and Skyler networked with excellent resources from DC, Dr. Gillio and Suzanne Greenfield. Both have offered their support in helping to create this pilot program. The committee will work on creating anti-bullying games and activities for summer youth camps. They agreed it would be best to focus our program on Elementary age youth. They feel they can make the most difference with this age group. Skyler has visited with NV Superintendent, Casey Berlau about the possibility of YC bringing in some anti-bullying activies or presentations into the schools. He was very open to that idea. Matt suggested YC partnering with FFA and other organizations to help spread the message. Dakota and Skyler suggested using the school’s Ipads and utilizing the interactive app they learned about in DC which works with a poster system. They agree the program should be focused on the positive side. They are thinking about a Scavenger Hunt activity which could be adapted for an anti-bullying message. The committee feels strongly that YC members must always be positive role models and good examples for their peers of all ages. YC could create packets to hand out to kids at all four schools in our county. It was agreed that the next plan- ning meeting would be on May 3rd, before the YC regular monthly meeting. We will begin with planning youth summer camps and then build this program from there—with the hopes of being ready to help at the schools next year. ______________________________________________________________________________________________ The regular monthly meeting of the ADAIR COUNTY YOUTH COUNCIL Officers and Members was held on Sunday, April 26 th at the Stuart Bowling Alley in Stuart. Absent: Jacob Baudler (had to work), Hank Bohling (church confirmation & family reception), Noah Cooper (?), Heath Downing (track), Joey Huntington (?), and Beau Weisenheimer (pig show).

Hailey called the meeting to order at 2:32pm. Deena welcomed Jane Hayes-Johnk (ISU Extension Special-ist) to the meeting.

minutes were provided). Riley moved to approve March 1st Minutes. Matt seconded. All were in favor. Motion carried.

THANK YOU NOTES: Hailey read the two Thank You notes sent by Phyllis Lane from Methodist Food

Pantry in Greenfield and The Cottage Pantry Volunteers in Stuart regarding the food donations from the Middle School Dance event. The Stuart Pantry helps feed 287 people.

COMMITTEE REPORTS: Clover Kids Program Report—Sam reported on the April 4th session. He

helped them make Easter Egg Baskets which they really enjoyed. They also served a veggie pizza for snack time. There was a townwide Easter Egg Hunt on the town square afterwards. Anti-bullying Committee Chair, Caroline, reviewed updates from the Anti-bullying Meeting held at 1:30pm. They are beginning to kick off their program by helping plan youth summer camps with Kelsie Cass. They will also prepare some handouts and activities for county fair. She re-enforced that they want to instill into the younger youth a better sense of healthy friendships, acceptance of differences, show kind-ness and learn to share more with others. Youth Summer Camps Planning Helpers: Deena explained that Kelsie Cass-Kralik will be this year’s Summer Youth Camp Coordinator. Kelsie has asked for volunteers to help work with her to plan some youth camps that enforce YC’s messages on anti-bulling, promoting literacy and healthy living/fitness. Hailey, Morgan, Skyler, Dakota and Caroline offered to work with Kelsie to plan camps. Poverty Committee Chair, Hailey, talked about focusing their mission work by helping “Meals for the Heartland” which is now in Des Moines. YC could go there and help package food to help people in need. Hailey said she would research costs and details and report back at the next meeting. YC members sug-gested that a portion of the funds raised for “Share the Warmth” could be utilized to purchased meals for this cause. Healthy Living Committee Chair, Vince, apologized that he was not prepared with ideas. Deena ex-plained that we needed to create some anti-tobacco project ideas so that we meet our Anti-tobacco Grant obligations. Several of the YC members threw out some ideas that could be adapted to an anti-tobacco message. Examples included dance, boxing (‘beat tobacco’), races or a junk car that participants could hit or beat up. Vince will visit with his committee members and come up with some ideas at a future meeting. Scholarships Committee Chair, Heath, was not able to attend the meeting. Deena explained the up-dates regarding the Clover Run Event being cancelled. A flyer was mailed to all YC members in advance explaining the reasons behind the change. The event’s attendance was going down each year. A new an-nual marathon in Creston was now scheduled on July 3rd and since runners do not do back to back events, we would loose all the participants from the Creston area. When evaluating the finances of the event, it was barely breaking even. The proceeds from this event was then contributed to the Kelly Laughery Community Service Scholarship. Deena explained that the scholarship fund has been endowed so that it should continue to be self sustaining for years to come. Kelly was not a runner but she did like to dance and tutor middle school students—we could use the Middle School Dance Event as a fundraiser for the scholarship fund and raise way more money then the Clover Run Event. Participants could pay admis-sion instead of bringing canned food items. This might also help cut down the large number of attendees (try to keep it around 150). YC members liked the idea and will discuss it further at future meetings. Literacy Committee Chair, Joey, was not able to attend the meeting. Hailey explained that their next main focus was on helping with youth summer camps which promote literacy. Promote 4-H Committee Chair, Shelby, said their committee would come up with ideas of what would be needed for the YC Booth at county fair. It will be located right inside the entrance to the 4-H & FFA bldg. They will decide on handouts, posters, etc… The committee members would meet after this meeting to discuss plans for a youth activity (such as a Scavengery Hunt) and Pie in the Face activity plans for Coun-ty Fair. Deena passed out a rough agenda of the County Fair schedule for YC to familiarize themselves with. She also passed out a YC annual timeline which highlighted all YC activities by each month to help them anticipate upcoming activities. County Fair Board Representatives Report by Shelby and Riley (Youth Fair Board Members). They explained that they were bringing back the King Contest this year and to encourage guys to sign up.

OLD BUSINESS: Hailey explained that YC needed to set a date to paint buildings at the Adair County

Fairgrounds. YC members compared schedules and decided to set 5/3 as their initial date to paint imme-diately following the YC mtg at 2pm. Please wear old paint clothes. Deena will provide supplies, snacks and bottled water. YC chose 5/31 at 2pm as a backup date incase weather cancelled the first date. Hailey reminded members again to use Adair County Extension website and Facebook page for constant updates on important information regarding Youth Council. It’s the member’s responsibility to check the website for past meeting minutes.

NEW BUSINESS: Haiey announced and congratulated the State Awards winners...Hank (Citizenship & State Council); Heath (Food & Nutrition & 4-H Congress); Hannah (Citizenship), Skyler (Citizenship & Shooting Sports Ambassador Team Award ); Shelby (State Council) and Riley (Communication). Deena

discussed how important this experience is for all YC members. The next deadline for award applications would be due next Feb. 1st and she is more than willing help anyone who would like to apply. She will help them with their application form and create mock interview sessions to prepare them for their interview pro-cess in Ames. She asked YC to be thinking about that now so you can compile your project information to make the process much easier and less time consuming come next January. Hailey discussed her Herbert Hoover project idea with YC and asked for their help with the event on June 6 from 12:00-2:30pm at First Congregational Church in Stuart. Her event is called “Veterans Meal Benefit” where all proceeds will go to the veterans. YC members could help prepare food, serve food, carry trays, etc...very similar to what we did for County-wide Holiday Meal Event. She will ask for sign up at the next meeting. Next YC Meeting will be May 3rd (one week away) at Warren Cultural Center, Green Room at 2:00pm. Deena will provide snacks and bottled water. Don’t forget to wear paint clothes. Matt made the Motion to adjourn the meeting. Shelby seconded. All were in favor. Motion passed. The meeting was adjourned at 3:30pm. Deena explained that YC would take care of the cost of one game of bowling and shoe rental fees. YC members were responsible for their food and drink purchases. YC members enjoyed some bowling fun.
