The YDI is an interactive, hands-on professional development opportunity that will provide Club staff with practical skills to improve the quality of staff interactions with youth. Using the Youth Work Methods from the Weikart Center for Youth Program Quality, BGCA has designed the YDI to leverage this research-validated youth development approach and integrate planning with Club best practices.

What is the Youth Development Institute(YDI)?

The YDI currently incorporates the following Methods:

Introduction to the Active-participatory Approach – This method was designed to address youth needs, motivation and engagement. This youth-centered approach is the foundation for the Youth Work Methods Series.

Ask-Listen-Encourage – This method introduces various communication techniques to help staff build more supportive, youth-centered relationships. Participants learn how to ask more effective questions, to listen actively to youth, and offer youth encouragement rather than praise.

Building Community – This method introduces participants to a variety of activities designed to support the community building process. Participants learn the importance of building an emotionally safe community of peers and adults to help youth learn and develop as individuals.

Reframing Conflict – This method introduces participants to the High/Scope step-by-step model for reframing conict as well as general principles of conict resolution. Participants learn the basics of turning conict situations into opportunities for growth for the youth they work with.

Structure and Clear Limits – This method helps participants analyze the level of structure in their programs and practice identifying and maintaining clear limits.
