“ You Matter.”We say this every day to students on Youth Frontiers (YF) retreats. For some of these kids, this is the first time they’ve heard those words from another person. For others – who have been more disrespectful to themselves than any external bully could be – this message may help them see their own value and serve as a catalyst for treating themselves better.

We tell kids that how they treat themselves, their classmates and their teachers matters. Their character matters.

At Youth Frontiers, we inspire good character by teaching the values of kindness, moral courage, respect and personal responsibility. We believe that everyday acts of character truly matter to help make our schools and world a better place. And thanks to a growing body of evidence, more and more people are realizing the need for our schools to not only teach academics, but character as well.

Since 1987, Youth Frontiers has reached more than 1.4 million students and educators. The past school year alone, we facilitated 766 retreat programs in 11 states. It’s because of you, our generous supporters, that we’ve been able to tell each and every one of those students, “You matter. Others matter. What you do matters.”

In the pages of this report, you’ll read about the small, yet critically important acts of character that students, educators and parents around the Midwest are inspired to do because of Youth Frontiers’ work. These everyday acts are creating a movement of character and making a positive difference for individuals, schools and communities.

On behalf of the Youth Frontiers staff, thank you for your continued belief in the importance of teaching character and building positive school communities so that our young people can thrive.

Respectfully,

Joe CavanaughFounder & CEO

Thanks to outgoing board members Dave Dorn, John Estrem, Mary Weber Nord and Hank Shea for their support and service.

What are you doing to help

bring along the next generation? We can do better. We can work together to

make this world a better place.

When 11th-grader Terrance signed up to be a student mentor on Lewis and Clark Middle School’s Courage Retreat, he didn’t realize how much the retreat and the seventh-grade students would inspire him. He didn’t see himself as a leader, but found that he could relate to the stories shared by the middle school students in his small group. He understood what it was like to grow up in the inner city. He could empathize with their family struggles. He remembered what it felt like to need support. Terrance didn’t want the kids in his small group to feel like they were all alone – he wanted to help. He told his small-group students that he would be there for them if they needed anything – and he meant it. After the retreat, Terrance met with Shawn*, a seventh-grader from his group, to mentor and tutor him. When Shawn finally got a “B” on a math test, both Terrance and Shawn were proud of what they had accomplished.

Terrance is now convinced that this is what he would love to do with his life – mentor, help and guide students who otherwise might slip through the cracks. Youth Frontiers helped give Terrance the courage to be a leader and realize that he matters. And Terrance understands that it’s the little things he does every day that can make the biggest impact on someone’s life.

Youth Frontiers had a huge impact on me. When I walked into the retreat, I got this feeling, this vibe, and I knew this is what I want to do with my life.

– Terrance, 11th-grade student at Omaha North Magnet High School

A Student’s Perspective

Page 4: Youth Frontiers 2014 Annual Report

Three years ago, Allen and Tanja Pofahl heard fifth-grade students on a Kindness Retreat at Countryside Elementary in Edina, Minn., share how they were going to be kinder toward their classmates and teachers. The sincerity of their comments was inspiring. With three daughters, the oldest of whom would be attending her first Youth Frontiers retreat the following year, the Pofahls understood the importance of raising kids with good character.

Youth Frontiers has helped the Pofahls navigate some of parenting’s murky waters over the last few years. After hearing YF Founder & CEO Joe Cavanaugh give a presentation about parenting, they decided to institute some new technology rules in their house. Bedrooms are now tech-free zones and late-night texting is off limits.

When one of their daughters ran into some challenges with her peers, the Pofahls found themselves reiterating some of YF’s messages. “You don’t need to be friends with everyone, but you do need to respect one another.” And when another daughter watched a girl getting picked on at school, Allen and Tanja helped her understand how she could have stood up and made a difference.

For Allen and Tanja, Youth Frontiers represents the best they hope for their girls – kindness, respect and the confidence to be who they are. And it is what the Pofahls do each and every day that will have the biggest impact on their girls. Everyday acts matter – as parents, children, students and friends.

We WERE trying to find a NONPROFIT that was making a difference. With young kids of our own, we gravitated toward the core values that Youth Frontiers teaches.

A Donor’s Perspective

In May 2014, Brookfield East High School in Brookfield, Wis., hosted a Youth Frontiers Leadership Conference for more than 200 students from 14 Milwaukee-area high schools. The conference challenged 11th-grade student leaders to take responsibility for making their school a better place.

At the end of the retreat, students made commitments. To talk to the kids that no one else talks to. To stop gossiping. To display more school spirit. To show everyone that they matter.

In short, they committed to everyday acts of leadership. Michelle McKenna, school counselor at Brookfield East High School, noted that the YF Leadership Conference gave students the space to realize that they all had something in common: the power to improve their school climate.

“This day provided a setting for students to discuss not only what they wished would change within their schools, but helped generate ideas on how to make the change by giving them the tools, courage and enthusiasm needed to be leaders and make a difference,” said Michelle. “In my 20 years in education, Youth Frontiers is by far one of the most powerful, meaningful and impactful programs I have seen. YF is able to convey critical messages with a level of engagement and positivity that truly resonates with every participant – student and staff alike.”

After a year of hard work, incredible donor support and conscientious financial management, Youth Frontiers has beaten its budget once again. YF facilitated 21 more retreats than planned and still stayed close to the forecasted budget. In line with surpassing programming goals, YF also exceeded the development goal – leaving YF in a strong financial position with a year-end surplus. Guided by the board of directors, we made two key investments with the surplus, including:

• A modest financial thank-you gift to our staff for their incredible work throughout the year.• A deposit to our reserves in order to support key investments including our expansion efforts in Wisconsin, Nebraska and the Twin Cities.

Thank you for supporting our mission and making it possible to extend the impact of our retreats. Your everyday acts of support matter!– David McFarland, YF Board Treasurer
