LISTEN LIVE! Traveling this spring? Visiting parents, grandparents or grandkids? You can still worship with your friends and neighbors at Sulphur Grove. The Taylorsville campus broadcasts both the 8:45 and 10:30 am worship services live through the internet. Simply click into the Sulphur Grove website (www.sulphurgrove.org) and click on the “Click to Listen” button toward the bottom of the screen. You can hear all the music, all the prayers, and even the jokes!

Dear Sisters & Brothers in Christ, I would like to start my “Coffee Chat” this month by asking ask you a question: Out of a total of 1,038 churches in the West Ohio Conference, where do you think Sulphur Grove ranks in size based on average worship attendance? Of folks I have questioned personally, their responses range from the top 50% to the top 75% of the churches in the conference. What is your best guess as to where Sulphur Grove ranks? Based on 2016 data published in the West Ohio Conference Journal, you might be surprised to learn that SGUMC is the 46th largest church (out of 1,038) in the West Ohio Conference based on average worship attendance. That puts SGUMC in the top 5% of churches in the West Ohio Conference! I realize it may be difficult to think of SGUMC as a large church when Ginghamsburg, with an average attendance of around 3,500, is just up the road. Please remember however, Ginghamsburg is a “megachurch” and is in different class of church size altogether. In reality, as United Methodist Churches go, Sulphur Grove is a large church. In fact, 75-80% of the churches in the West Ohio Conference have an average worship attendance of less than 100. Even across all mainline denominations in the U.S., Sulphur Grove ranks in the top 10% based on average worship attendance. So what is my point? Many folks here at Sulphur Grove cherish the memory of our church as “the little church by the road.” This is a significant part of Sulphur Grove’s history. Yet by God’s grace and the hard work of many of you and our predecessors, we are no longer “the little church by the road.” It is wonderful that our spirit and hospitality are that of a “little church” where people are known by name. That is a part of our history we would do well to retain. Yet the “spirit” of thinking we are a small church can have a significant downside. Thinking of Sulphur Grove as a small church can have the effect of limiting our dreams and visions for ministry to those of a small church. And let’s be honest – it denies the reality of God’s vision for Sulphur Grove and the reality our church’s size. Given this new information (that SG is the 46th largest church in the conference), I ask you to consider what it means for Sulphur Grove. Should Sulphur Grove be a leader or a follower in outreach to our community? Should Sulphur Grove be a leader or a follower in mission and ministry? Should Sulphur Grove be teaching mission and ministry to others or asking them to come and teach us? God has graciously grown Sulphur Grove from its humble beginnings as “the little church by the road” into the 46th largest church in the West Ohio Conference. God no longer sees Sulphur Grove as a little church, so why do we? God has grown Sulphur Grove for so much more than being “the little church by the road.” Over the years God has blessed Sulphur Grove with growth, resources, and wonderful facilities to be a leader in mission and ministry to our community and the world. We celebrate and cherish our history as “the little church by the road.” I also hope we cherish and celebrate that God has chosen a different path for “the little church by the road” – God’s path to be a large church – gifted, equipped, and empowered to be a leader in mission, ministry, and making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. Your fellow servant of Christ Jesus,

WHAT’S HAPPENING AT BRANDT ...

Our youth group serves teens between the ages of 13- 18 years old. They meet on Wednesdays at Brandt UMC. We serve dinner at 6:00 p.m. and the meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. and runs until 7:00 p.m. If you know of any teens that live in the Bethel Township, New Carlisle, or Tipp City areas, please invite them to come and check us out.

We will be hosting our Vacation Bible School during the week of July 30th - Aug. 3rd

from 5:30- 8:00 pm Monday-Thursday and 7:00 pm – 8:00 pm on Friday. Monday through Thursday we will serve a lite dinner for the children from 5:30 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. and from 6:00 pm 8:00 all children will participate in various activities and prepare to put on a skit to perform before their family members and friends on Friday. After the skit, everyone will gather in the Fellowship Hall to enjoy some cookies and ice cream. To conclude the evening all (children, volunteers, and family members and friends) will be invited to go outside and release a colorful balloon into the air. For the past four years, we have partnered with West Charleston Church of the Brethren and Brandt Lutheran Church to host our VBS. This year the two churches have decided to host their own VBS at their respective locations. Due to this, our team has been cut tremendously. We are looking for volunteers that can help us with coordinating and designing games, leading and teaching biblical VBS lessons for various age groups, people to facilitate outdoor activities, some floaters, and some people to serve food. If you are interested and can help, please contact Pastor Latoya at 937.361.5243 or [email protected].

Our morning breakfast has concluded for this year. It will start back up after Labor Day.

BOOK OF THE MONTH CLUB The book to be discussed Sunday, May 20th at 6:00 pm in room 101 of the Taylorsville campus will be "Journey of the Universe,” by Brian Swimme and Mary Tucker. It weaves the findings of modern science together with the enduring wisdom found in the humanistic traditions of the West, China, India and indigenous people. Brian Swimme is a professor at the California Institute of Integral Studies in San Francisco. Mary Tucker is senior lecturer at the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies and Yale Divinity School. Together they have written a book for the non technical reader who is seriously interested in the connection between modern science after Einstein and Hubble, and faith in a higher power. The books may be purchased at the Taylorsville campus office for $12.00. Contact retired pastor Ken Clark for more information at 667-5409.

DOMINICAN REPUBLIC

MISSION TEAM 2017 REPORT

Six persons from Sulphur Grove United Methodist Church, Ron Doyle, Jim Klinger, Rev. Marty McMichael, Cindy and John Thomson and Mark Wenzel, traveled to Barahona, Dominican Republic on November 11, 2017 and returned on November 18, 2017. While there, our construction team completed a total of ten (10) latrines in Batay #9 at individual houses. The value in having a latrine at the residence is that the occupants do not have to walk to the “communal” latrines, or worse use the sugar cane fields. This cuts down on transmission of diseases & improves overall sanitation. Our dental team worked in Batay #7 and Batay #6 and extracted many teeth. We will be returning to Barahona this fall. Tentative dates are for leaving Ohio October 20, 2018 and returning October 27, 2018. We are always looking for new participants to go with us. If you have any interest or questions please contact Mark Wenzel at [email protected] or call 609 8025. Approximate cost is $1,350.00, possibly less depending on airfare.

DID YOU KNOW ABOUT “THE SAMARITAN” DONATION BIN?

For many years, there has been a red plastic bin out in the gathering space at the SGUMC Taylorsville campus. This bin was initially called “The Other Place - Dayton’s only Daytime homeless Shelter Donations.” The purpose of having the red plastic bin was to provide our congregation with a location that they could place their donated items to help and support the men, women and children staying at The Other Place daytime shelter. Over the years, many support organizations that we at SGUMC supported in the past have evolved. The Other Place is now “HomeFull” and has the mission of working to end homelessness by providing housing, services, advocacy and education. St. Vincent de Paul went from a strictly night time only shelter to a 24-7 shelter. We have also been adopting other Dayton Area organizations that help, support and serve the homeless as well as individuals and families in need. We now are donating items to the Dayton area homeless and less fortunate through organizations such as HomeFull (Men’s & Woman’s Gateway Shelters), St. Vincent de Paul, Mercy Manor, Oasis House, St. Paul’s UMC, and Wesley Community Center. The reason for calling our bin “The Samaritan” is based on Luke 10 - The Parable of the Good Samaritan - the one who had mercy. We believe that this title more accurately describes the growth of our mission from our initial The Other Place to now include all of the organization that help, support and serve the homeless as well as individuals and families in need. MISSIONS AND OUTREACH “We are a ‘mission church.’

We believe in reaching out to those in need locally, nationally and globally.” A NOTE OF THANKS & REPORT

FROM THE “THE HOMEFULL MISSION TEAM” For it is said “If any of your fellow Israelites become poor and are unable to support themselves among you,

help them as you would a foreigner and stranger, so they can continue to live among you.” Leviticus 25:35 On Saturday April 7th, 2018, the SGUMC HomeFull Mission Team members prepared and served lunch to 48 women guests and afterwards to 30 family members (mostly children) at the St. Vincent DePaul facility.

Before serving lunch to the ladies, we provided the family section manager with several cases of size 5 & 6 diapers, 2 large cases of baby wipes, sippy cups, a box of infant and children’s clothing. Later in the month, we provided St. Paul’s UMC with a case of Ramen noodles, 50 pounds of rice, two cases of canned vegetables, a case of gallon Ziploc bags, infant formula, small jars of baby food, a bag of plastic grocery bags and a variety of different men’s and women’s hygiene products, as well as men’s and children’s clothing. We also provided Mercy Manor with two sets of silverware, women’s clothing, and a few towels. I want to thank the SGUMC congregation for all of the donated items placed in “The Samaritan Bin” for the homeless and those in need. These are just some of the desired donations: Sippy Cups Money for Bus Passes/Tokens (Place your financial gift in the offering clearly marked “HomeFull Bus Passes”) Infant/Children clothing, size 5/6 Diapers, Training Pants, Toilet Paper, Cleaning Supplies & Laundry Detergent Men’s & Women’s Deodorant Feminine Hygiene and Oral Hygiene Products God has so richly blessed each of us in so many ways and wants us to be “Good Samaritans.” Please consider helping by serving or donating items for the homeless and for those in need. Please continue to keep those who are homeless and in need, especially the children, in your daily thoughts and prayers. For more information regarding volunteering to help cook and serve lunch, please contact Jane Elam at 937-233-4939 and information regarding donations, please contact Allan Matts at 937-890-5457.
