Firstly, every farmer has to put aside a corner of his field for poor people. This Mitzvah is called PAY-YA. How much of the field, you ask? Well, the average is one fiftieth of the field. If you're more generous, 1/40 and if you're feeling on the cheap side but you still want to fulfill the Mitzvah, 1/60th will do. Now, let's say you've got a worker collecting stalks of grain and he/she drops one or two. You're not allowed to pick them up. Hashem wants you to leave them for poor people. This Mitzvah is called LEKET. The third part of the Mitzvah is that once the stalks have been bundled up, if one bundle is accidentally left in the field it goes to the poor. This is called SHIK-CHA. These three Mitzvot apply to grains, olives and grapes, but not greens or vegetables. JOSHUA: THE INVINCIBLE CONQUERER Yoni’s after school class for teens. Mondays at 6:00pm. Non-members welcome. Rav Bezalel Ashkenazi (RAB) was one of the leading Talmudists and rabbis of

his day. Descended from a family of German scholars, he was born in Israel,

but moved to Egypt with his family shortly after, as it was very difficult for

Jews to make a living in Israel at that time. In Egypt he received his Talmudic

education from R’ David ben Solomon ibn Abi Zimra and R’ Israel de Curial.

RAB would become the teacher to many great scholars, including Rav Isaac

Luria (The Ari) and Rav Solomon Adeni. In 1556 he was elected head of the

Jewish community in Cairo. He would later (controversially) help abolish the

Nagid (princely leader) position in the community, as he saw the Nagids

becoming increasingly corrupt. When, in 1587, a dispute occurred in Jerusalem

over the point whether scholars not engaged in business should contribute to

the taxes paid by the Jewish community to the pasha (Turkish ruler), and to

what extent. RAB together with several other rabbis, took the stand that Jewish

scholars, being usually compelled by love and devotion to emigrate to Israel,

and being scarcely able to support themselves, should be relieved from all

taxes. However, upholding this ruling was easier said than done.

Later that same year, RAB settled in Jerusalem, where he was recognized as

the chief rabbi by both the Sephardim and the Ashkenazim. The conditions in

Jerusalem were oppressive for Jews; and it was mainly due to RAB's influence

that the congregations of the city were not dissolved. The German Jews, who

ordinarily did not recognize the jurisdiction of the Sephardim, and who, being

largely scholars, refused to pay the Jews' tax, nevertheless bowed to

Ashkenazi's authority. The Ashkenazim had to contribute to the Jews' tax one-

sixth of the sum that was sent from Europe for their support, otherwise the

impoverished Sephardim, could not have remained in Jerusalem under the

merciless exploitation of the Turkish pashas. This peaceable arrangement

between the Ashkenazim and the Sephardim was due solely to the personal

influence of RAB. Sadly following RAB’s his death the agreement crumbled.

Rabbi Betzalel Ashkenazi is most famous for his popular notes and commentary

on the Talmud called "Shitta Mekubetzeth."
