Minor consent is aminor’s (ages 12-17)

right by California law to confidentiality and clinical services such

as…

Youth consents (Ages 12-17)

• Birth control (e.g., condoms, pills, “the shot”)

• Plan B (Morning After Pill)

• STI/HIV Testing

• Pregnancy testing

• Health Education services

• Mental Health/Substance Abuse Counseling*

• Other sensitive services

Hormonal:• NuvaRing • The Pill• The Patch• Depo Provera Shot• IUD

Birth ControlNon-hormonal:• Condoms• Spermicide• Diaphragm • Abstinence

Emergency Contraception (Plan B)

Use within 1-5 days after unprotected intercourse

NOT a form a birth control

STI Testing: Diagnosis and Treatment

•STI = Sexually Transmitted Infections

•Chlamydia and Gonorrhea are most commonly tested

•Testing is painless

Pregnancy Testing

At least 11 days after unprotected sex

Testing is through urine sample

Testing is painless

Mental Health/Substance Abuse Counseling

•Free counseling

•Talk about anything that is bothering you

•Does not mean you are crazy

Confidentiality

Anything you say about sex, drugs, and feelings is CONFIDENTIAL unless you give the health care provider permission to share it.

When Confidentiality is Broken If you tell him/her:

• You are being abused (physically and/or sexually)

• You are going to hurt yourself or someone else

• You are under 14 and having sex with someone 14 years or older

• You are under 16 and having sex with someone 21 years or older

Then he/she must report to Child Protective Services

Parental Consents• General medical visits

• Immunizations

• Medications

• Mental Health/Substance Abuse Counseling*

*All youth have the right to an assessment for counseling services without parental permission; after the assessment, it is determined if parental consent is needed
