Introduction to IYHFGerman

school teacher, Richard Schirrmann, who set up the first Youth Hostel which was opened in 1912 in Altenia, Germany. Formation of International Youth Hostel Federation(IYHF) in Amsterdam in 1932.

INTRODUCTIONIn 1949 a committee was set up in Mysore for the promotion of the movement. The movement came into existence in 1956 in Delhi.

INTRODUCTION

IYHF is presently represented by 62

National Member Associations and 18 Associate Organizations and 18 Accredited Agents with a chain of more than 4,500 Youth Hostels and 4.5 million youth members worldwide.

ABOUT YHAI Youth Hostel Association of India was setup in 1949 in Mysore by professors of Maharaja College.

National Youth Hostel Trust was created in 1970.

International Youth Hostel at 5, Nyaya Marg, Chanakyapuri, New Delhi was setup in1977.

Objectives of YHAiTo provide budgeted accommodation to

young people during travel. To organizing adventure sports, social and

other activities(like blood donation camp etc.) Organize training programmes in leadership

and quality living for youth and engage them in social cause.

Contd..Be financial viable and self sustainable

organization. Develop an understanding between state

units and YHAI in order to coordinate better and form a relationship with our state units. Increase the membership base of YHAI in

terms of life and annual memberships.

VISION

To become a centre of affordable and clean accommodation for young people during their travel to encourage youth travelling in India & education and understanding through personal experience.

MISSION

Our mission is to enable & promote travel, tourism, adventure spirit, national integration & education &health by providing hostels of good standards to millions of youth of limited means during their travel at affordable rates on a sustainable basis & by organizing adventurous & educational events & to develop understanding among youth about social & developmental issues.

Licensee Youth

Hostel Scheme

YHAI announced Licensee Youth Hostel scheme which asks initiative from private property owners for license so that our members can avail better accommodation. The plan of licensee youth hostels was implemented as per strategy plan 2000-2006. As per new strategy plan 2008-2010, we will try to increase our number of licensee youth hostels from 53 to 200.

Contd.. The present scenario is 53 Licensee Youth Hostels in different cities. By increasing franchisee youth hostels we are concentrating on improved and better standards, quality accommodation, environment and facilities. Every licensee youth hostel has to follow 5 International standards.

Centenary Celebration Year 20092009 being a special year in the

history of YHAI as we are celebrating 100 years in youth hostelling & 60th anniversary of YHA of India & hence we planned some special Programmes for the Celebration Year which are as under.

Centenary Celebration Year 2009 Our Chairman Dr. Harish K. Saxena travelled four countries Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam as budgeted backpacker for Peace and International Understanding mission.

INAUGURAL FUNCTION AT MYSORETo

mark the 60th year celebration of the Youth Hostel Association of India an inaugural function was organized at Maharaja College of Mysore on 14th July 2009 along with the National Executive Committee Meeting.

Keep Rohtang Pass Clean

The programme was organized from 5th to 26th may 2009. three groups consisting of 60 volunteers participated in special environment programme to keep RohtangPass Clean.

Our National Chairman had a meeting with National President Md. Shafi Pandit to motivate people regarding the programme. Our esteemed National Chairman Dr. Harish K Saxena also highlighted the programmeand motivated people to keep Dal Lake clean which is one of the most famous places near to extinct.

Biking

Kullu - Khardung La.

116 cyclists started from Kullu to Khardung La via Leh in 17 days on mountain bikes discovering their passion about one of the most exciting road tracks. Beautiful sceneries, landscapes, vallies escort them all along the road side heading towards their destination.

National Motor Bike Expedition 110 motorcyclists started from Delhi to Khardung La via Leh (ht.-18380ft) and returned Delhi via Srinagar exploring one of the greatest and challenging road tracks one can ever imagine. It is also the highest motorableroad in the world & the expedition completed in 17 days travelling 2500kms.

Inaugurated by the President of India, Shri Neelam Sanjeeva Reddy on 4 December, 1977.

milestonesYHAI embarked upon an adventure activity programmes on National Level in 1970. Silver jubilee of YHAI Trekking Programmes was organized on 12th Nov 1995 where Sh. P.A. Sangma, Minister of Information and Broadcasting was the Chief Guest.

milestonesDr. Harish K. Saxena, National Chairman, YHAI was elected as Board Member of of IYHF at 41st IYHF conference at Austria, in 1996. 42nd IYHF conference was hosted in India in Aug 1998 where Dr. Harish K. Saxena was re elected as Board Member with highest ever votes.

Coincided with the conference was the

Golden Jubilee Year Celebration of YHAI. Government released a commemorative postage stamp depicting an environment friendly youth hostel.

Dr. Harish K. Saxena, National Chairman, YHAI became the 1st Vice President at 43rd IYHF Strassbourg Conference. Later he was elected President of IYHF in 2000 and remain for 8 years continuously. He became the first non-European to hold this post.

understanding of Youth Hostelling for Peace and International Understanding was signed between UNESCO and International Youth Hostel Federation under the Presidentship of Dr. Harish K. Saxena.

Licensee Youth Hostels throughout India through franchising as a part of Strategy and Vision 2000-2006 Plan of IYHF.

milestonesUnder the leadership of Dr.

Harish K. Saxena, National Chairman YHAI, a delegation of 28 members visited Pakistan under Youth Hostel Leaders Exchange Programme. In reciprocal to this a 32 member delegation under the leadership of Mr. Anwaar H. SiddiquiVice President PYHA, from Pakistan also visited India in Nov 2004. A warm welcome and exclusive hospitality was provided by IYH New Delhi.

To organize various trekking programmes at a budgeted price for our members and their families so that they can explore the adventure & heaven lies within Indian scenic beauties and heights.

Future plansAs a part of Strategy and Vision Plan 2008-

2010 we are concentrating onto increase number of Licensee Youth Hostels to a total number to 200.

To become a benchmark for others and

become the leader in proving world class facilities, excursions, adventure sports and accommodation at a budgeted price.
