Make a video that shows what you think about gambling.

To get you started …read the following:

• Gambling includes scratchies, sportsbetting, lotteries and poker machines etc etc.

• People can get carried away when they lose money gambling then try to win it back.

• People can have fun gambling when they bet what they can afford to lose. Most people lose!

• Young people can have gambling problems.

• Lots of people gamble but don’t get addicted.

• Some do get addicted, and that can have serious health and personal consequences for them and their families and friends.

• The chances of winning Oz Lotto are 1 in 8,145,060; being struck by lightning, 1 in 576,000; winning a jackpot on a poker machine, 1 in 52,521,875.

• Is gambling risky? Is it safe? Who usually wins? What’s luck got to do with it?

Information for teachers and youth workers

See “What’s the Real Deal?” www.dhhs.tas.gov.au/gambling This teacher resource is full of classroom activities and information about responsible gambling education, all linked to the Tasmanian school curriculum.

Prizes

Prizes to be shared equally between the school/college/youth service and the entrant.

Groups split the prize among group members.

There are two sections: Junior, ages 12–14, and Senior ages 15–18.

Each section will be awarded the following prizes:

1st $1000

2nd $750

3rd $250

5 x prizes of $100 each

5 x $25 Target shopping vouchers

Judging criteria

• Skilful use of the medium: how good is it technically? —25%

• Clarity of content: how clear are your ideas? —25%

• Shows understanding of the information, see To get you started (opposite page) —25%

• Creativity, originality, imagination —25%

Conditions of entry

• Entries can be in any video style, including animation, song clip, documentary, drama etc .

• Entries must be in MPEG 2, 3 or 4, or AVI format, maximum 4 minutes.

• Multiple entries are allowed.

• Scripts and song lyrics must be supplied in writing.

•Thejudgingpanel’sdecisionisfinal.

• Prize winning entries will be uploaded onto the Gambling Support Program’s website for public viewing and may be used for future community education programs. Prize winners names and school/college/youth service will be acknowledged unless they request in writing for this information to remain confidential.

• If you’re using a music soundtrack you must get written permission to use the music from the publisher or band (or maybe you know some musicians who could put some music together for you).
