Immanuel and St. Andrew CE Primary School
Year 5 Class BulletinTerm 2 November 2011
Dear Parents / Carers,
Welcome back to Year 5! The class has had a fantastic start to the year and Im looking forward to the rest of
the term. It was great to see you all over Parents Evening and to have an opportunity to share targets and
progress. The school journey to Carroty Wood went extremely well and the children are still talking about it. It
was a lovely opportunity for the children to spend time together and take part in team building activities as well as
some challenging ones, such as high ropes! Thanks again to all the parents that contributed food for the trip. The
food was delicious and meal times were one of the childrens highlights thanks to your generous donations and Mr
Robinsons cuisine!
If you have any questions, queries or concerns, please come in and speak to me in the playground before school. Youcan also email me on; [email protected]

Topics this termKnowledge and understanding of the world(History and Geography)
We are continuing with our topic on WW2 as the
children are immersed in it and we have some more
exciting activities planned! This term we will be
looking more closely at evacuation and rationing. We
may even do some cooking (an activity I know the
children are keen to do!) We also have another trip
planned and our Literacy units are based on our
learning of WW2.

The science focus will be Healthy Living. Children will
learn what makes a balanced diet, the effect of their
diets on their bodies and how maintain healthy
lifestyles.

create their own artwork based on paintings we will
study and compare.

afternoon teaching Year Five Science.
Important Notes
All homework will be set eachThursday and is due
back the following Tuesday. It can be returned
earlier if completed. We have had a disappointing
start to the term as numerous children did not
return their homework this week. Please encourage
your child to be responsible for their homework and
faithful in returning it on the correct day.
Homework diaries should be in school everyday as
they are a useful communication tool between
myself and you as parents. If your child is unable to
complete their homework, please write a note in the
homework diary and I will sign it.
Spellings will be given out every Monday and the
children will be tested on a Friday.
Reading Books
Children will continue to receive a new book fromthe school reading scheme on a Friday. It is very
important that children bring their books and book
bags to school on a daily basis.
Could I also encourage you to listen to your child
read and question them about the text at home?
Reading books have already been handed out.

Literacy
We will be learning techniques and strategiesfor persuasive writing. We will look at
different types of persuasive texts and learn
one, using the talk for writing approach. The
children will hold a class debate about whether
children should be evacuated. Following this,
the children will then imagine that they are
living in 1939 and will write a letter to Neville
Chamberlain persuading him for or against
evacuation.
Our next unit is Instructional texts. Again, we
are going to link this to our topic, creating a
How to survive evacuation booklet, which will
include recipes for rationing. Top tips for
making the most of evacuation and puzzles and
games.
We are going to finish reading Goodnight
Mister Tom and move onto some more WW2
fiction there is so much to choose from!
Please encourage your children to read in their
spare time. There are prizes to be had for
children that read any of the recommending
reading list that was given out in term 1.
