Ylä-Savo Vocational College trains versatile and skilled individuals for working life - creating both new professionals and supplementing the knowledge of existing professionals. Our range of education contains alternatives for both young people and adults.

50 years of education and developmentThe Ylä-Savo Vocational College is part of the Ylä-Savo Municipal Federation of Education. The Municipal Federation of Education is owned by eight Upper Savonian municipalities: Iisalmi, Keitele, Kiuruvesi, Lapinlahti, Pielavesi, Rautavaara, Sonkajärvi and Vieremä. The Ylä-Savo Municipal Federation of Education has acted as a provider of extensive education in the sub-region since 1962.

Over 2000 students annuallyAround 1200 undergraduates, 800 adult students and 300 students on apprenticeship training contracts study at the Ylä-Savo Vocational College every year. There are around 300 members of staff, of which 200 are teachers.

Our undergraduate programmes cover a broad range of studies in technology, communication and transport, natural resources and the environment, tourism, catering and domestic services, social services, health and sport and culture.

You can apply for vocational upper secondary education and training using the joint application system online at www.haenyt.fi. Further information on applying can be found at www.koulutusnetti.fi.

A vocational upper secondary qualification provides a strong foundation from which to make the transition to working life, as well as eligibility for further studies at polytechnics or universities. It is also possible to supplement professional skills by completing a further vocational qualification or specialist vocational qualification. MAHIS is a network of cooperation comprising Upper Savonian general upper secondary schools and vocational education institutes. It provides the opportunity to simultaneously study both vocational and upper secondary studies and create a personal study plan based on your own goals.

Finnish National Skills CompetitionThe use of skills within a competitive framework is part of studies at the basic qualification level. In addition to developing operations, other goals are the development of teaching methods and tools in basic education and the improvement of teachers’ professional skills. www.skillsfinland.com

Adult education offers education and development services to meet the needs of individuals, companies and other associations. Our aim is to ensure the area’s vitality by promoting the competence and professional skills of its inhabitants.n personalised qualification-targeted education and qualifications n supplementary education according to needn education, training and development services in the workplace

You can always turn to us when you’re aiming for n a new professionn turn your existing skills into a qualificationn progress in your working life n development of your own skillsn an increase in competitive ability skills on the labour markets

You can also turn the skills you gain from work into a qualification by completing a vocational upper secondary qualification, further vocational qualification or specialist vocational qualification without participating in the actual training. If your skills are already at a level where you are aiming to obtain a qualification, you may participate in a competence-based qualification. This takes place under the personal supervision of a teacher in the field. Should your skills require updating, you may participate in preparatory training where needed. Our range includes numerous degrees from various fields.

We offer a suitable form of education for everyonen Self-motivated education is partly financed by the Ministry of Education and Culture, in which the participant pays the participation fee, which includes study material and the first few lessons. Studies may be on a full-time or part-time basis. Self-motivated education is usually versatile, so you can study alongside work. Studies consist of preparatory training and demonstrations of skills needed for qualifications if the education is qualification-targeted.

n Labour policy training is training funded completely by the Ministry of Employment and the Economy for the unemployed or those threatened by unemployment, with the aim of employment. The training is usually organised during the day. Participants apply for the training via their own Employment and Economic Development office, which is also where student admission takes place.

n The required content and methods of implementation will be tailored as needed for the competence and performance development needs of companies and other associations. Training units of longer duration can also be carried out through personnel training financed by the Ministry of Education and Culture, through apprenticeship training or through Precise-Training, which is financed partly by the Ministry of Employment and the Economy.

If the need is to obtain new employees, they can be trained on an apprenticeship contract or with RecruitmentTraining together with the Ministry of Employment and the Economy. We continuously develop our range of services according to the business needs in the area.

Training under an apprenticeship contract is a flexible, individual and practical-based form of training, which is based on a fixed-term contract, valid employment or public service employment relationship or entrepreneurship between the student and employer.

It is possible to complete all vocational upper secondary qualifications, further and specialist vocational qualifications through apprenticeship training.

For many young people, adults and company customers, apprenticeship training is an excellent alternative. The training is usually qualification-targeted. The qualification is chosen as a joint decision between the trainer-employer and the student. They participate in the drawing up of an apprenticeship contract under the guidance of personnel from the apprenticeship training office.

Central issues are the working community as a learning environment, learning in connection with tasks and operation and the development of one’s own competence. The theoretical training takes place in the educational institute in many forms. It deepens, supplements and broadens the development of the skills learnt in the working community. A teacher in the professional field can personalise the content and method of implementation of the training, and change the qualification to a competence-based qualification.

Apprenticeship training is also a suitable form of training for people who require special support.

The Ylä-Savo Vocational College is actively involved in the development of the entire North Savonian region. The aim of our operations is to develop the region into an ever better place to live, study and work. We carry out cooperation with businesses, educational institutes, municipalities, the state and the European Union.

Developing teachingWe lead, coordinate and support numerous projects. The aim of regional development operations is to produce new solutions and methods of operation for the needs of both vocational education and companies and associations in the area. A central goal is to develop methods of operation which we can use to train skilled employees.

Ongoing and long-term work is carried out in the educational institution to develop teaching. Through our strong network we can bring new opportunities, learning environments and teaching methods to study.

International operationsOn-the-job learning units completed abroad provide important experience and perspective for working life. Personnel have the opportunity to participate in international on-the-job learning units and teaching in educational institutions in various countries and to participate in international development projects. International development projects aim to find good practices and develop joint solutions for the challenges of vocational education in other countries.

Developing company operationsCompany- or field-specific development projects are part of expert services in business. The development of services and education based on working life needs are a central part of the development services’ operations. Close-knit cooperation with working life improves the quality of vocational teaching on offer.

The diverse range of education and training offered by the Ylä-Savo Vocational College makes it possible to offer a comprehensive range of services. Practice restaurant Oppimestari is located on Asevelikatu street and store/café Eväsmestari and hairdresser Hiustaiturit in the Luma centre. Services concerning the cultural, metal, construction, electric, wood, vehicle and transportation industries are also available to order.

Small animal clinic Tassula and Veterinary clinic Tassutupa operate in Peltosalmi. Hingunniemi offers farrier services

and training for harness race horses. There are also a modern stallion breeding unit with artificial insemination facilities and equine clinic services. We lease premises for occasions and everyday purposes. You can also buy your own home from us. Our unique driving practice track makes it possible to practice driving in slippery conditions all year round in vehicles of all sizes.

We also offer services and products marketed by JA companies which change yearly. JA companies are part of the JA Year as an Entrepreneur programme, are founded by students and operate on real capital.
