became his coach around that time.[2] In the 2006–07season, Hanyu competed at the 2006 Japan NoviceChampionships in the Novice A category and won the

bronze medal.[4] This placement earned him an invitationto compete at the 2006 Japan Junior Championships,

where he placed 7th.[5]

Hanyu's home rink reopened in 2007.[2] He competed atthe 2007 Japan Novice Championships in the Novice A

category and won the event.[6] He was invited to competein the 2007 Japan Junior Championships, where he won

the bronze medal.[7]

Junior career

2008–2009 season

Hanyu moved up to the Junior level and debuted on theISU Junior Grand Prix. He placed 6th in the shortprogram and 4th in the free skating to finish 5th overall at

the event in Merano, Italy.[8] Following his Junior GrandPrix event, at the 2008 Japan Junior Championships,Hanyu placed 4th in the short program with 57.25 pointsand 1st in his free skate with 124.92 points, giving him atotal of 182.17 points to win the gold medal overall in the

competition.[9] This competition served both as the juniornational championships and the World JuniorChampionships qualifier, and Hanyu has also qualified bythis placement for the 2009 Junior Worlds.

This medal earned him an invitation to compete on thesenior level at the 2008 Japanese Championships, where

he placed 8th.[10] In February 2009 at the 2009 WorldJunior Championships, Hanyu placed 11th in the shortprogram with 58.18 points and 13th in his free skate with103.59 points, giving him a total of 161.77 points to finish12th overall.

2009–2010 season

In the 2009–2010 season, Hanyu won both of his JuniorGrand Prix events and was the top qualifier for the Junior Grand Final. At the Japanese Junior Championships,

he won the short program and placed 2nd in the free skating to win the title overall.[11] This earned Hanyu aninvitation to compete on the senior level at the Japanese Championships. He then competed at the 2009–2010

ISU Junior Grand Prix Final, which he won, achieving a new personal best score.[12] At the 2009–2010 JapanJunior Figure Skating Championships, he placed first on the junior level. He also competed at the senior level,

where he came in sixth. Based on his results, Hanyu was chosen to compete at the 2010 World JuniorChampionships. He won the competition after placing third in the short program and first in the free skate to

earn a new personal best of 216.10 points, and became the fourth Japanese man to win the junior world title.[13]

Senior career

2010–2011 season

Hanyu announced that he would turn senior for the 2010–2011 season. Hisassignments for the 2010–2011 ISU Grand Prix series were the 2010 NHK

Trophy and the 2010 Cup of Russia.[14] In his senior debut at the 2010NHK Trophy, Hanyu placed 5th in the short program with 69.31 points; inhis free skate, he landed his first quadruple toe loop jump in an ISUcompetition and came in 4th with 138.41 points, giving him a total of 207.72points to finish 4th overall. Hanyu finished in seventh place at the Cup ofRussia. At the 2010–11 Japanese Championships, Hanyu was in secondplace after the short program, but faltered in the free skate and finishedfourth overall. As a result, he was selected to compete at the 2011 FourContinents, where he won the silver medal with a new personal best score.

Hanyu was skating at his home rink in Sendai when the 2011 Tōhokuearthquake and tsunami struck his hometown and the region. Water pipesunder the ice at his home rink burst as a result of the earthquake and tsunami

on March 11, 2011.[15] He trained in Yokohama and Hachinohe, Aomori

until his home rink reopened on July 24, 2011.[1][15][16] He also skated in

60 ice shows, using them as an opportunity to train.[2] In April, he and other skaters took part in an ice show to

raise money for victims.[1][16]

2011–2012 season

Hanyu began the 2011–12 season with a win at the Nebelhorn Trophy.He placed first in both the short program and the free skate, for acombined total score of 226.26 points. For the 2011–12 Grand Prixseries, he was assigned to the 2011 Cup of China and the 2011

Rostelecom Cup.[17] He finished 4th at the Cup of China, then won the

Rostelecom Cup with a new personal best score[18] to qualify for his firstsenior Grand Prix Final, where he placed fourth. Hanyu then won thebronze medal at the 2011–2012 Japan Championships, earning a spot onthe Japanese team for the 2012 World Championships. In his seniorWorlds debut, Hanyu was seventh in the short program but placedsecond in the free skate. He won the bronze medal overall with a totalscore of 251.06 points, behind gold medalist Patrick Chan of Canadaand silver medalist, his team mate, Daisuke Takahashi of Japan.

In April 2012, Hanyu switched coaches to Brian Orser in Toronto,

Canada.[19][20] It was reported he would make frequent trips to Toronto and continue to attend high school in

Sendai.[19] After moving to Canada, Hanyu increased his on-ice training to 3–4 hours a day, up from 1–2 hours

which had been due to a combination of limited ice time in Sendai, schooling, and asthma.[1][2] Hisautobiography, Blue Flames, was published in Japan in April 2012, with the royalties and part of the proceeds

going to the Sendai ice rink.[2]

2012–2013 season

Hanyu began his season at the Finlandia Trophy, winning the gold medal. He landed two quadruple jumps, aquad toe and a quad salchow, in his free skate; it was the first time he had a landed the latter jump in

competition.[20][21] Hanyu won the silver medal at his first Grand Prix event of the season, the Skate America.

At his second event, the NHK Trophy, he scored 95.32 in the short program, a new world record,[22] and went

on to win the gold medal in his hometown.[23][24] Hanyu qualified for the Grand Prix Final in Sochi, where hefinished second.

In January 2013, Hanyu claimed his first national title at 2013 Japan Championships after placing first in theshort program and second in the long. He took silver at the 2013 Four Continents, having placed first in theshort program and third in the free. At the 2013 World Championships, he was ninth in the short program andthird in the free skate, finishing fourth overall.

2013–2014 season

Hanyu began his season at the 2013 Finlandia Trophy where he won the gold medal after placing first in both

the short and free program.[25] He won silver in both of his 2013–14 Grand Prix events, the 2013 SkateCanada International and 2013 Trophée Eric Bompard, qualifying him for the 2013–14 Grand Prix of FigureSkating Final. At the Grand Prix Final in Fukuoka, Hanyu set a new world record in the short program with99.84 and won gold after placing first in both segments.

In December 2013, Hanyu went on to win a second Japanese national title after placing first in both

programs.[26] He was subsequently named in Japan's teams to the Olympics and World Championships.

At the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Hanyu broke his own world record in the men's short program, scoring101.45 points. He is the first and only skater to score over 100 in the SP. Hanyu obtained 178.64 points in thefree program and won Japan's first Olympic gold medal in men's singles.

Skating technique

Hanyu has executed 3A-3A, 4T-3A,[27] 4S-3A sequences, and even 4T-3A-3A in shows. He has also landed3A-3T-2T (2011–2012 Japanese Nationals). He jumps counter-clockwise like most skaters. His combinationspins usually include the biellmann spin and the doughnut spin, both of which are known for their difficulty, formale skaters especially, due to the flexibility required.

Personal life

Hanyu was born and raised in Sendai and attends the same high school formerly attended by famous Japanese

figure skaters Takeshi Honda and Shizuka Arakawa. He has an older sister named Saya.[1] After the 2011

earthquake and tsunami, his house was damaged but liveable.[1] He has asthma.[1]
