General InformationMembership • Membership fees and/or registration fees are non-refundable and

non-transferable. • All rates are subject to change without notice. • In order to maintain the proper structure of our programs, makeup

classes are not available under any circumstances. • Membership dues may be placed on hold for medical reasons

accompanied by a physician’s note. All memberships must be active without holds in order to participate in our programs.

Credit/Refund Policies • All programs are subject to be canceled and/or combined during

any session. If the YWCA needs to cancel and/or combine a class a partial refund or voucher may be granted upon approval of the Membership manager.

• All vouchers granted may be redeemed up to 1 year from the issued date. All vouchers are non-transferable.

• All program cancellations by members done at least one week prior to the start of the session will receive a full refund or voucher. There will be no refunds/vouchers after the start of the session unless a physician’s note is issued stating a member is not allowed to swim.

• A $25 fee is applied to all returned checks.

Transfers • In order to insure the quality of our program transfers can only

be made from one class to another during the first two weeks of the session without an applicable transfer fee. Any transfers during the third week of a session will be allowed with a $50 transfer fee. All transfers are approved and processed through the membership department and no other arrangement outside of the membership department will be honored.

Family Memberships • All family memberships may include up to two adults and any

dependent children up to age 18 and students living at home up to age 22 with proof of residence and school schedule.

Monthly Drafts • All membership dues deducted on a monthly basis may not be

canceled within the first 6 months.

Absence • Credits/refunds will not be given for absences.

Dressing • Use the appropriate locker rooms or barrier-free dressing areas.

Changing in the rest rooms is prohibited.

Emergency Building Evacuation • Building evacuation is required in case of fire drill or emergency.

Financial Aid • Financial assistance is available. Please contact the YWCA

Membership Department for information and applications.

Guest Policies • Members may purchase daily guest passes for $10. The Bolger

Fitness Center offers $15 per day guest passes to non-members when accompanied by a BFC member and YWCA out-of-town members residing more than 50 miles from our facility. Limit 5 passes per guest per year.

Late Pickup • Due to the short length of preschool and children’s classes,

parents/ guardians must remain at the YWCA facility for the duration of the class. Any child not met at the end of class will remain with the instructor or authorized personnel as every effort is made to reach the parent or caregiver. The YWCA is required by law to contact DCPP (Division of Child Protection & Permanency) for any child not picked up within one hour after class ends. If you have a child in our Before & After School Programs or Camps, please refer to the Parent’s Handbook.

Medical Hold • Members who wish to place a hold on a membership for medical

reasons must provide a doctor’s note at the time of injury or medical occurrence. To restart a membership, the YWCA Membership Department must be contacted prior to the expiration date. No credits will be given after a membership has expired.

Parking • Private parking is available only while using YWCA facilities

(State Statute 39:4-56:6).

Showering • NJ-state law requires all swimmers to shower prior to entering pool.

Supervision for Children (under age 12) • Parent/guardian supervision is required at all times.

Non-compliance: Child will not be permitted to participate in class.

Waiting Lists • Class sizes are limited. If a class is full, you will be added to the

waiting list and contacted by a program representative if space becomes available.

Swim Lessons in Ridgewood

Aquababies Ages 6 months to 2 yearsInstructor to student ratio 1:10Purpose: Familiarize children between the ages of 6 months to 2 years with the water and teach swimming readiness skills. Provide safety information for parents and teach techniques parents can use to orient their children to the water. Children learn water acclimation, introductory kicking, floating, elementary swimming and safety skills.

Prerequisites: No skill prerequisites; Child must be 6 months to 2 years old. Parent must accompany child in the pool.

Double Dippers Ages 2 to 3½ yearsInstructor to student ratio 1:10Purpose: Familiarize children approximately 2 to 3½ years old to the aquatic environment and help them acquire rudimentary basic aquatic skills. Help participants begin to develop positive attitudes and safe practices in and around water.

Prerequisites: No skill prerequisites. Children should be approximately 2 to 3½ years old. Parent must accompany child in the pool.

Learning to swim means more than just taking a few lessons. It teaches lifelong fitness and safety skills, is fun and therapeutic, and instills a sense of confidence, self-esteem and accomplishment for everyone—young and old. The YWCA Bergen County Aquatics Department offers American Red Cross swim lessons for every age and swim level. Class size is limited to ensure safety and maintain the highest quality instruction. Specialty swim instruction is also available, including American Red Cross Lifeguard Training, Re-Certification, and Scout Water Badge programs.

Pre-School Children and Parents Note: Babies must wear a reusable swim diaper. Disposable diapers are not permitted. For your convenience, swim diapers are available at the Welcome Center.

Get in the Swim: FREE swim instruction for child cancer patients & survivors.YWCA swim lessons are available for children who have or had cancer for free, based on the availability of funds. Attendees can participate in any of the appropriate swim classes. For more information, call Membership at 201-444-5600 ext. 400. Funding for this program is made possible through the generous support of the Ruth Jones and Fannie Averso Fund.

Little Dipper 2 Ages 3 to 5 yrs.Instructor to student ratio 1:5Purpose: Increase proficiency and build on the basic aquatic skills learned in Little Dipper 1. Reinforce water safety concepts and skills introduced in earlier levels and introduce additional water safety topics. Class for those who can submerge their face, blow bubbles and leave the wall unassisted. Swimmers learn the front crawl with breathing, elementary backstroke and safety skills.

Prerequisite: Successful demonstration of the Little Dipper 1 Exit Skills Assessment.

Little Dipper 3 Ages 4 to 6 yrs.Instructor to student ratio 1:5Purpose: Orient participants to the aquatic environment and help them gain basic aquatic skills. Help participants begin to develop positive attitudes and safe practices around water. Little Dipper 2 graduates develop front crawl and endurance while strengthening their elementary backstroke and learning the back crawl. Must be able to swim five yards.

Prerequisite: Successful demonstration of the Little Dipper 2 Exit Skills Assessment.

Little Dipper 1 Ages 3 to 5 yrs.Instructor to student ratio 1:5Purpose: Build on and improve skills and increase knowledge of water safety topics. Children learn introductory kicking, floating, elementary swimming and safety skills.

Learn the breast stroke and advanced safety skills while improving lap endurance and stamina.

Prerequisite: Successful demonstration of the Youth Level 3 Exit Skills Assessment.

Youth Level 3 Ages 6 to 12 yrs.Instructor to student ratio 1:8Purpose: Improve participants’ proficiency in performing the swimming strokes that were introduced in Level 2. Swimmers coordinate the front and back crawl, elementary backstroke, safety and deep water skills for 15 yards.

Prerequisite: Successful demonstration of the Youth Level 2 Exit Skills Assessment.

Youth Level 2 Ages 6 to 12 yrs.Instructor to student ratio 1:6Purpose: Build on the skills learned in Level 1 to help participants achieve basic water competency in a pool environment. Those who can already swim 10 yards on their front and back learn stroke coordination, breathing, deep water skills and safety.

Youth Level 6 Ages 8 to 15 yrs.Instructor to student ratio 1:8Purpose: Refine strokes so participants swim with greater efficiency and effectiveness over longer distances. Learn the approach stroke, butterfly, surface dives and advanced safety skills while polishing lap skills with proficiency and power.

Prerequisite: Successful demonstration of the Youth Level 5 Exit Skills Assessment.

Pre-Teen/TeenTeen Level 1 Ages 11 to 14 yrs.Instructor to student ratio 1:5Purpose: First time swimmers who fear the water build confidence while learning the fundamentals of swimming, kicking and floating.

Prerequisite: None.

Teen Level 2 Ages 11 to 14 yrs.Instructor to student ratio 1:5Purpose: Build on the skills learned in Level 1 to help participants achieve basic water competency in a pool environment. Adult Level 2 Swim ProgressionInstructor to student ratio 1:4

Purpose: Improve participants’ proficiency in basic aquatic skills. Teach skills and concepts needed to stay safe in and around water and to help themselves or others in an aquatic emergency. Learn breathing techniques and coordinating the front crawl and backstroke. Class begins in shallow waters and progresses to the deep end.

Prerequisites: Participants must be comfortable in chest-deep water, able to put their face in the water, and able to perform strokes that can be recognized as front crawl, breaststroke and back crawl, each for 15 yards.

Adult Level 3 Deep Water BasicsInstructor to student ratio 1:4Purpose: Refine participants’ front crawl, back crawl, breaststroke and turns, and build endurance. Skills and concepts needed to stay safe in and around water are also taught. Continue the front crawl while building endurance and learning the breast, back crawl and other advanced strokes. An ideal class for lap swimmers looking to polish their strokes.

Prerequisites: Participants must be able to swim the following strokes at the level of performance described in the Adult Level 2. Front crawl, 25 yards; Breaststroke,15 yards; Back crawl, 25 yards.

The Ridgewood Department of Health requires the YM/YWCA to close the pool for a minimum of 4 hours in the event of accidental contamination by fecal matter.

YWCA Bergen County Synchronized Swim provides an opportunity for children and young adults to work as a team in a multi-sport environment, as well as socialize with a peer group outside of school. Synchro Swim requires athleticism and artistic flair, combining the skills of swimming, gymnastics and dance. Participants develop stamina, core strength, breath control, elegance, and split-second timing during land and water training and show off their strength, grace, flexibility and aerobic endurance while performing challenging routines. Synchronized Swimming allows individuals to contribute their talents and creativity while requiring true team work amongst its members.

Tiger Sharks Swim Team Ages 5 to 18 yrs.This program offers the best combination of team sport and individual challenge with an emphasis on skill development, positive values, and competitive experiences. Swimmers will have the opportunity to refine the 4 major strokes (freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly), and compete in future local mini-meets. Practices focus on swim time management, endurance training, stroke development and dry land exercises.

Come see Y the W makes a difference in our School Age Child Care programs! Our mission is to engage children in fun activities that promote self-esteem, personal responsibility and teamwork. Our programs operate each day during the school year in 21 Bergen County schools. We serve 1,000 children daily, providing parents with a safe, affordable alternative to leaving children home alone. Twinkle Toes Ages 3 to 4 yrs.Instructor to student ratio 1:10Beginners develop movement skills through ballet basics and body motion. Dancers must be 3 years old by March, 2017.

For 28 years, YWCA Bergen County’s dance programs have introduced children to Ballet, Jazz and Tap while fostering a love of movement and music appreciation with our engaging and motivating classes. Children express themselves through creative movement in dance class. Skills such as balance, coordination, poise and flexibility are cultivated and often help to nurture self-confidence and self-esteem. This healthy exercise can be the foundation for a lifetime of energetic, physical activity.

Our program, led by Miss Ronda Capilli, operates during the school year from September to June for six 8-week sessions. An annual recital performance is held in June for students enrolled in Sessions 4 and 5. Non-recital classes continue after the school year in our summer program. Lessons are available for children ages 3 to 13 and placement is based on both age and ability. There are no make-up sessions for Dance Classes.

Swim lessons held in Englewood, NJ are accessible due to a partnership between YWCA Bergen County and the City of Englewood. Thank you to The Englewood Community Chest for their generous donation which make these programs possible for the residents of Englewood, Tenafly and Englewood Cliffs.

Aquababies Ages 6 mos. to 2 yrs.Purpose: Familiarize children between the ages of 6 months to 2 years with the water and teach swimming readiness skills. Provide safety information for parents and teach techniques parents can use to orient their children to the water. Children learn water acclimation, introductory kicking, floating, elementary swimming and safety skills.

Prerequisites: No skill prerequisites, Child must be 6 months old to 2 years. Parent must accompany child in the pool.

Double Dippers Ages 2 to 3½ yrs.Purpose: Familiarize children approximately 2 to 3½ years old to the aquatic environment and help them acquire rudimentary basic aquatic skills. Help participants begin to develop positive attitudes and safe practices in and around water.

Prerequisites: No skill prerequisites. Children should be approximately 2 years old or older. Parent must accompany child in the pool.

Little Dipper 2 Ages 3 to 5 yrs.Purpose: Increase proficiency and build on the basic aquatic skills learned in Little Dipper 1. Reinforce water safety concepts and skills introduced in earlier levels and introduce additional water safety topics. Class for those who can submerge their face, blow bubbles and leave the wall unassisted. Swimmers learn the front crawl with breathing, elementary backstroke and safety skills.

Prerequisite: Successful demonstration of the Little Dipper 1 Exit Skills Assessment.

Little Dipper 3 Ages 4 to 6 yrs.Purpose: Orient participants to the aquatic environment and help them gain basic aquatic skills. Help participants begin to develop positive attitudes and safe practices around water. Youth Level 2 Ages 6 to 12 yrs.Purpose: Build on the skills learned in Level 1 to help participants achieve basic water competency in a pool environment. Those who can already swim 10 yards on their front and back learn stroke coordination, breathing, deep water skills and safety.

Prerequisite: Successful demonstration of the Level 1 Exit Skills Assessment.

Youth Level 3 Ages 6 to 12 yrs.Purpose: Improve participants’ proficiency in performing the swimming strokes that were introduced in Level 2. Swimmers coordinate the front and back crawl, elementary backstroke, safety and deep water skills for 15 yards.

Prerequisite: Successful demonstration of the Level 2 Exit Skills Assessment.

AdultsAdult Level 1 Shallow Water BasicsPurpose: Help participants gain basic aquatic skills and swimming strokes. Teach skills and concepts needed to stay safe in and around water and to help themselves or others in an aquatic emergency. First-time swimmers who are comfortable in the water and with submerging learn breath control, floating techniques and arm strokes.

Prerequisites: None.

Adult Level 2 Swim ProgressionPurpose: Improve participants’ proficiency in basic aquatic skills. Teach skills and concepts needed to stay safe in and around water and to help themselves or others in an aquatic emergency. Learn breathing techniques and coordinating the front crawl and backstroke. Class begins in shallow waters and progresses to the deep end.

Formerly known as the Rape Crisis CenterhealingSPACE is Bergen County’s only dedicated service for survivors of sexual violence, their families and friends. Open 24 hours a day and 7 days a week, support is available whether the assault occurred hours or years ago. Confidential Sexual Violence Advocates provide information, support, accompaniments for medical and legal proceedings, options regarding reporting and/or disclosure, as well as referrals to community agencies for additional services.
