Dear Friends,

Fiscal year 2011-2012 was a year of great success and challenge at the YWCA: we opened the Center for Families in June, thus completing the first phase of our campus expansion; the collaborative, nonpartisan Real Women Run offered its first training to encourage Utah women to run for political office; the Salt Lake Area Family Justice Center at the YWCA celebrated five years of providing an array of confidential walk-in services; and we continued to work very hard to meet the higher baseline financial needs of our expanded campus.

The Center for Families grand opening marked the completion of a long, seven-year journey that took us from the heights of successfully raising nearly $21 million to fund the much-needed capital expansion of our family violence services to the throes of the recession, where economic uncertainty, skyrocketing need, and changing community priorities threatened the foundation of our efforts to serve more women and their families. $225,000 less in United Way funding in 11/12 brought severe financial strain, and the YWCA reduced residential capacity, staffing, and services as a result. Nonetheless, on a beautiful June afternoon, our Board of Directors, staff, donors, friends and community partners gathered together to collectively announce “WE DID IT!” Our gratitude to those who believed in this grand vision cannot be expressed; the kindness and generosity of the community who reached so deeply into their hearts to benefit others is felt in every room on the YWCA campus. Again, and always, we thank you.

But of course, our work is not complete. As you will see within these pages, the need for the YWCA’s family violence services continues to exceed our capacity to respond, and adequately funding our uniquely comprehensive programming continues to be our greatest challenge. To that end we embarked on a number of exciting, successful and fun initiatives last year, including the establishment of the Mary Willis Critchlow Society, a group of women who support the YWCA’s mission through education, service, and philanthropy; and also held the first Ride to Rise Above,

a motorcycle benefit ride to raise critical funds for our family violence services.

We are also broadening the YWCA’s reach with enhanced educational programming “for every woman” that empowers them to learn, lead, and influence the world around them. Our commitment to benefiting Utah women and their families is unshakeable, and we are determined to respond to their needs and aspirations in innovative ways. With the completion of major construction on our campus we are now renewing our focus on the YWCA’s broader mission of eliminating racism, empowering women, and promoting peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all. Look for our signature programs to deepen and our reach to expand in the coming years as we continue to be a voice for women, a force for change, and a place for hope in Utah.

YWCA Salt Lake City - Annual Report 2011/12Shelter: Women in Jeopardy According to the Utah Point in Time count on January 21, 2012, 26% of sheltered individuals were victims of domestic violence – 67% more than the previous year. The YWCA provides shelter, safety, and a new start for women and children made homeless by domestic violence. The Women in Jeopardy (WIJ) program completed our first full year of residency in our new buildings, and provided 745 women and children shelter for a total of 40,816 days of service. Families who entered WIJ came with more complex and acute situations, and thus our days of services increased last year by 3.9%. We were unable to meet 1,009 requests for shelter due to capacity. We answered 3,026 crisis calls and 253 walk-in individuals were provided with support.

Joni & Logan’s storyJoni came to the YWCA’s shelter in January with her infant son, Logan. She had recently fled the home she shared with her abusive partner after two years of physical, sexual, and emotional abuse, and had taken refuge in the home of a friend. Like many of the women who turn to the YWCA for help, Joni’s situation was complicated by a history of abusive relationships and substance abuse stretching back to her teen years. However, before Logan was born, she sought treatment for her addiction and had been following a counseling program for over a year. Since entering the shelter, she has kept her weekly appointments. Some weeks this would not have been possible without the support of her YWCA advocates; the free drop-in child care that kept her baby safe during appointment times; and even cab fare on days of inclement weather.

Today, Joni is healthy and full of hope, and Logan is thriving. They have moved from the shelter to the YWCA’s transitional housing, where Joni will continue to build her abilities to be self-sufficient and return to community life.

Transitional Housing: Kathleen Robison Huntsman Apartments and Residential Self-Sufficiency The 36-unit Kathleen Robison Huntsman (KRH) apartments for families and 12-unit Residential Self-Sufficiency program for single women continued to provide affordable transitional housing for up to two years for those rebuilding their lives after experiencing domestic violence.

A total of 196 individuals, 54 women and 142 children, lived at KRH for an average of 17 months. At the end of this fiscal year, 12 families were on the waiting list. During their stay at KRH, 100% of women completed an individualized safety plan. At exit, 76% of families moved on to permanent housing situations. 52% of women were employed, and 38% were furthering their education. 22 women lived in RSS for an average of 12 months. During their stay at RSS, 100% of women completed an individualized safety plan. At exit, 58% of women moved on to permanent housing situations. 25% of women were employed, and 25% were furthering their education.

Salt Lake Area Family Justice Center

The Salt Lake Area Family Justice Center (SLAFJC) at the YWCA moved into its beautiful new home in the Center for Families in June 2012. The SLAFJC served 700 people, 20 men and 680 women, with walk-in services offered by fourteen community partners.

The Salt Lake Area Family Justice Center at the YWCA remains deeply indebted to the government and nonprofit partners who work together to ensure the safety of those who are no longer safe at home: Salt Lake City’s Prosecutor’s Office, Salt Lake City Police Department, Legal Aid Society of Salt Lake, Department of Workforce Services, Utah Legal Services, Holy Cross Ministries, Sego Lily Center for the Abused Deaf, Utah Crime Victims Legal Clinic, Rape Recovery Center, Division of Child and Family Services, Salt Lake County District Attorney’s Office, Unified Police Department, and FJC SANE.

Children who are exposed to domestic violence can face significant emotional, physical and developmental challenges, and at the YWCA, our children services team continues to work hard to keep these children safe and provide them the opportunity to heal and a place where they can “just be kids.” Last year, the Children’s Advocacy and Intervention Program (CAI) served 578 children.

We provided 117 school-aged children with academic services and 100% of them reported that they had learned how to keep themselves and others safe while at the YWCA. Within 48 hours of entering our shelter, 67% of children over age six met with a child advocate and completed a safety plan.

Our afterschool program provides a safe place for kids to recover from the harm of domestic violence. We are proud to offer year-round Boy and Girl Scout troops, and full-time summer camp for children living at the YWCA.

The YWCA continues to be a voice for women and a force for change for every Utah woman. Our 23rd Annual LeaderLuncheon welcomed keynote speaker Jennifer Siebel Newsom and honored six amazing women:

The 17th annual YWCA Week Without Violence was held in October. Numerous community events were held that included Peace and Friendship Story Times at Salt Lake City Public Libraries that focused on conversations about non-violence, and an annual daffodil planting event to honor family, friends, and community members who suffered from acts of gun violence. In addition to events raising public awareness

about violence in our community, the YWCA presented Lloyd Pendleton, Director, Homeless Task Force, Utah Department of Community and Culture, with the Public Official of the Year award for his efforts to strengthen the safety, health, and well-being of women and children in Utah.

The Lolie Eccles Early Education Center (LEEEC) reaffirmed its National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) accreditation in February 2012. This exclusive certification ensures that the YWCA is offering the highest-quality child care to 242 children and their families. LEEEC is proud to work with community partners to offer diverse offerings to its children; partners include the Salt Lake City Library, Green Tree Yoga, and Heart and Soul Music Therapy. The YWCA’s “CHOICES for Women” curriculum was expanded and updated and a new parenting class, “1-2-3 Magic”, was piloted. A total of six courses were offered for community members. A new partnership with Planned Parenthood of Utah began to co-offer “Teen Success,” a program to support pregnant and parenting teens.

Real Women Run – Find Your Voice, a collaborative nonpartisan effort that began in fall 2011 to empower women to participate fully in public life and leadership, held its first successful training on January 12, 2012. The coalition includes the YWCA Salt Lake City, The Hinckley Institute at the University of Utah, Salt Lake Community College, Vision 2020, AAUW, League of Women Voters of Utah, current and former elected female officials and representatives from political parties in Utah, and other organizations that support women.

The YWCA’s Racial Justice Task Force met throughout the year and actively organized not only the “Stand Against Racism” in April but also a “Week Without Racism” (films, discussions and other activities for staff, guests and residents), focus groups, and numerous other educational opportunities for YWCA staff.

The fourth annual Young Women’s Leadership Summit, organized by the YWCA’s Young Women’s Council, attracted about 70 young women between the ages of 18 and 35 to the Leonardo for an afternoon of learning and networking on the theme “Build Your Brand: How to Manage Your Image for Success”. Executive coach and organizational consultant Colette Herrick gave the keynote address and mentors advised attendees on a variety of topics. The Salt Lake Council of Women, representing many women’s groups, celebrated its Centennial and awarded a scholarship to a mother living at the YWCA’s Kathleen Robison Huntsman Apartments. The Council’s fundraising efforts, along with a contribution by Salt Lake Community College, allowed the mother to attend classes for one year.

The YWCA initiated a “Safe at Home” Campaign during national Domestic Violence Awareness month. Utah’s sixteen domestic violence shelters joined with KUTV Channel 2 to raise awareness about domestic violence, educate their communities, connect Utahns with resources, and raise critical funds during a statewide telethon to help the shelters protect and support victims of domestic violence throughout the state. The campaign also featured a special program on domestic violence in Utah.

Women’s Centennial Legacy Endowment Gifts

Thank you to the following Mahatma Gandhi Statue donors. The north garden of the Center for Families features a life-size bronze statue of Mahatma Gandhi, entitled “Apostle

of Peace”, by well known sculptor Dennis Smith. The YWCA is honored to have been chosen by the Gandhi Alliance for Peace as the site for the statue, which was specially

commissioned for the YWCA and funded by these donors.

The Women’s Centennial Legacy Bridge represents donations of $10,000 or more to the YWCA’s endowment. Donations can be made in the name of, honor of, or memory of a mother,

wife, grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt, oneself or friend.
