FEB 26 (3:00 MATINEE & 6:45) MANCHESTER BY THE SEA Director: Kenneth Lonergan; USA, 2016, 137 min; 14A Cast: Casey Affleck, Michelle Williams, Lucas Hedges In Kenneth Lonergan’s movies, the past gnaws at people until it threatens to gnaw them away entirely. This heartbreaking drama centers on a seething, tight-lipped janitor (Casey Affleck) who arrives in the title Massachusetts seaport to bury his older brother and discovers that he’s been named guardian of his 16-year-old nephew (Lucas Hedges). A playwright by training, Lonergan writes leather-tough dialogue that serves mainly to pro- tect the characters from their own raw emotion; despite all the hard talk, this is a movie of deep sorrow, compassion, and forgiveness. —Chicago Reader FEB 28 & MAR 1 (7:00 & 9:00) I AM NOT YOUR NEGRO Director: Raoul Peck, France/USA, 2016, 95 minutes In one of the most courageous and assertive documentaries of the year, Raoul Peck picks up on an unfinished manuscript by James Baldwin to examine the issue of race in America through the (too-short) lives of Martin Luther King, Medgar Evers, and Malcolm X. Connecting these martyrs of the Civil Rights movement with Black Lives Matter, Peck has produced a searing work that cuts to the very heart of American identity. —Vancouver International Film Festival MAR 2 (7:00 ONLY) VIMFF’S BEST OF THE FEST TOUR The Federation of Mountain Clubs of BC presents Vancouver International Mountain Film Festival’s 2017 Best of the Fest Tour, featuring an exhilarating selection of out- door adventure films. THE SALESMANDirector: Asghar Farhadi; Iran, 2016, 125 min; Persian with subtitles; PGAfter scoring an Oscar for A Separation, Asghar Farhadi returns to Tehran for this quietly gripping drama about a couple, amateur actors appearing in Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman, whose relationship starts to splinter in the aftermath of an assault. Married couple Emad (Shahab Hosseini) and Rana (Taraneh Alidoosti) move into a new flat, not knowing that its previous occupant was a woman despised by her neighbours. Rana is attacked by a strange man. As Rana retreats into herself, Emad, frustrated by his inability to comfort her, decides to play detective and find the culprit himself. But if and when he does, what will he do then? And at what cost? —Vancouver International Film Festival

LIONDirector: Garth Davis; Australia, 2016, 119 min; rated G A moving performance from Dev Patel is the resilient soul of this enthralling feature debut from Garth Davis that tells the true story of Saroo Brierley and his tenacious quest to find the family from whom he was separated 25 years earlier. Tempering its sen-timentality with authentic feeling, the film is a stirring contemplation of roots, identity and home. Sunny Pawar, who plays Saroo as a 5-year-old in the opening chapter, and Nicole Kidman, as Saroo’s adoptive mother, give beautiful performances. —The Hollywood Reporter

DANCERDirector Steven Cantor; UK/Ukraine, 2016, 85 minutes; English & subtitles; PG 26-year old Ukraine-born ballet superstar Sergei Polunin loves to dance but doesn’t always know why. That internal conflict is at the heart of this sensitive, luxuriantly filmed documentary about the princely, magnetic Polunin, A jubilant, talented child, Polunin’s obvious talent earned him a place at London’s Royal Ballet School. In record time he was named a principal at the Royal Ballet at 19, making him the youngest ever. But separated from his family, Polunin veered toward burnout, which led to behavior that earned him a reputation as ballet’s bad boy. From early home videos to the fiercely emotional, tattooed star of the “Take Me to Church” video that became a viral sensation, “Dancer” becomes a gentle inquiry into how a gifted performer disrupts his life in order to test his passion. —L.A. MR. GAGA: A TRUE STORY OF LOVE AND DANCEDirector: Tomer Heymann; Israel, 2015, 100 min; English & Hebrew with subtitles; PGLeading Israeli choreographer Ohad Naharin is profiled in possibly the most exciting documentary for fans of edgier modern dance since “Pina.” With a compelling lead character and plenty of striking performance footage from his tenure to date as director of Batsheva Dance Group, Tomer Heymann delivers a feature that has won a handful of fest prizes.Still fit, limber and driven as ever in his mid-60s, Naharin began professional training as late as age 22. He accepted an offer in 1990 to take over Tel Aviv’s Batsheva Company. He chucked its staple fare for some adventuresome new works of his own. Their electric impact, incorporating jagged, unpredictable movement, multimedia factors, sociopolitical themes and other challenging elements, quickly attracted new patrons — and critical admiration that greatly increased the institution’s international stature.Between riveting excerpts from individual dances, Naharin is shown rehearsing his company and creating new pieces. —Variety

LAND OF MINEDirector: Martin Zandvliet; Denmark/Germany, 2016, 101 min; Danish/German with subtitles; 14AIt might seem hard to find a World War II story that hasn’t been told, but Danish director Martin Zandvliet has come up with a fresh and compelling approach. Based on a true but not well-known part of history, the film works as a moving antiwar essay and as a gripping thriller. After the offi-cial end of the war in May 1945, German POWs in Denmark were put to work on a deadly task — defusing more than 2 million German land mines along the country’s west coast. Danish Sergeant Rasmussen (Roland Moller) is assigned to oversee the German prison-ers. Most of them are teenage boys conscripted by Hitler in the last days of the war, and they are hopelessly ill equipped to carry out their dangerous job. —Hollywood Reporter

LA LA LANDDirector: Damien Chazelle; USA, 2016, 128 min; PGDamien Chazelle’s daring and beautiful follow-up to ‘Whiplash’ is an original L.A.-set musical starring Ryan Gosling and a glorious Emma Stone as a couple of Hollywood striv-ers — he a musician, she an actress — who fall in love. The director’s feel for a classic genre is instinctive; he knows how to stage and frame dance and lyrical movement, to transition from conventional to singing scenes, to turn naturalistic settings into fantasy backdrops. Musical lovers, and many others, will be swept away. —The Hollywood Reporter

A MAN CALLED OVEDirector: Hannes Holm; Sweden, 2016, 116 min; Swedish with subtitles; PGONE OF THE BIGGEST SWEDISH BOX OFFICE HITS OF ALL TIME! A touching comic crowd-pleaser that may call for a tissue or two by the end, A Man Called Ove is an irresistible adaptation of Fredrik Backman’s bestselling novel. It’s a heartwarming tale about a stubborn, short-tempered man with steadfast beliefs, strict routines and the feeling that everyone around him is an idiot—and no reticence about telling them so. After new neighbours accidentally run over his mailbox, the cantankerous old git’s solitary world is shaken in ways he would never have imagined…

The action unfolds both in the present and in the past. Ultimately, it’s a friendship with the new neighbours——that gives Ove a new lease on life… Holm makes poignantly clear that being needed is an essential human desire, and life is so much sweeter when shared with others. —Variety

She enlists the help of two younger women (Greta Gerwig, Elle Fanning) in Jamie’s upbringing. This is a poignant love letter to the people who raise us, as this makeshift family forges fragile connections that will inspire them through their lives.

TONI ERDMANN Director: Maren Ade; Germany, 2016, 163 min; German with subtitles; 14AOne of the most talked-about films of 2016 is an alternately hilarious and mortifying comedy about the fraught relationship between a repressed corporate consultant and her incessantly prank-playing dad. Retired divorcee Winfried (Peter Simonischek), an incor-rigible prankster, pays a surprise visit to his daughter Ines (Sandra Hüller), a high-ranking and tightly-wound management consultant, and soon insinuates himself into every aspect of her professional life, turning each day into a parade of embarrassment. Transforming a scenario fit for a sitcom into something wholly original and altogether more affecting, the must-see third feature from German director Maren Ade is an almost unbearably intense comedy that is being celebrated as the best film of 2016. —Toronto International Film Festival

SILENCEDirector: Martin Scorsese USA, 2016, 161 min; English & Japanese with subtitles; 14ACast: Andrew Garfield, Adam Driver, Yōsuke Kubozuka, Liam NeesonSet in the seventeenth century, two Portuguese priests, Rodrigues (Andrew Garfield) and Garrupe (Adam Driver), have heard rumors that their teacher and confessor, Father Ferreira (Liam Neeson), a missionary in Japan, has betrayed his Christian faith, and they travel to search for him. En route, they learn of the bloody persecution that Christians face in Japan, and when they’re smuggled into the country they, too, face the authorities’ wrath. Rodrigues is the protagonist of this picaresque epic of oppression and martyrdom. As he closes in on Ferreira the movie morphs into a spectacularly dramatic and bitterly ironic theatre of cruelty that both exalts and questions central Christian myths. It plays like Martin Scorsese’s own searing confession. —The New Yorker

PATERSONDirector: Jim Jarmusch; USA, 2016, 118 min; PGA gem. Adam Driver stars as a bus-driving poet (or poetry-writing bus driver) in this Zen fugue from American director Jim Jarmusch. Driver has never been more in-the-moment. Paterson feels like the most intimate, heartfelt film from Jarmusch in a long while. It’s like a stone skipping across a pond, surprising us with widening ripples of revelation. It’s a one-of-a-kind, strangely moving film, and as close as cinema gets to pure poetry. —Maclean’s

HIDDEN FIGURESDirector: Theodore Melfi; USA, 2016, 127 min; PGThis exuberant, inspiring drama tells the fact-based story of three black women who strove for upward mobility as NASA mathematicians during the JFK era. Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer, and Janelle Monae star as the “human computers,” who use their prodigious number skills to help calculate the trajectories for the Mercury Seven astronauts and their street smarts to negotiate humiliating work-place hurdles. The excellent leads get robust support from Jim Parsons, Kirsten Dunst, Mahershala Ali, and Kevin Costner. —Chicago Reader

JULIETA Director: Pedro Almodóvar; Spain, 2016, 99 min; Spanish w/ subtitles; 14AAdapted from three short stories from Alice Munro’s “Runaway” collection. To match Munro’s signature restraint, Pedro Almodóvar tones it down. Partly filmed on the romantic seaside of Galicia, “Julieta” is a nonstop visual feast, but it possesses just as much sub-stance as style. —Washington Post
