Summer Haul Pass gives big break to

students on Pasco County buses

Pasco County Public Transportation (PCPT) will be giving Pasco County students a chance to ride all summer for only $20.00. The special student rate will be effective starting June 1 until August 31,

2015.

“Students who have summer jobs can use the bus and save a lot of money this summer,” said Mike

Carroll, Pasco County Public Transportation Direc-tor. “It sure beats spending their hard earned money on gas and if they can’t afford a vehicle. The student

fare is a great choice to meet their transportation needs.”

Passes will be sold at any Pasco County Library, Pasco/Hernando State College West Campus

Bookstore and the PCPT Administrative Office locat-ed at 8620 Galen Wilson Boulevard Port Richey.

Fixed-route, transit buses operate throughout east and west Pasco County and along State Road 54. PCPT also operates the county's para-transit ser-

vice for those persons unable to access transit ser-vice because of a verifiable disability, environmental

barrier, or distance from a route.

For more information about the student Summer Haul Pass, call PCPT at (727) 834-3322, (352) 521-4587 or (813) 235-6073. A brochure on the Summer

Haul Pass program can be viewed by clicking on this link: http://fl-pascocounty.civicplus.com/

MyPasco is selected as name of new app

MyPasco was selected from more than 250 entries

Congratulations to Mike LaSala (works for Pasco County Govt) Guy Colson (Hudson) and Ashley Pike (Trinity). All three came up with the name MyPasco which was selected to be the name of the new Android and IPhone APP. The APP is expected to be ready for download in mid to late June 2015

Pasco County Government has made a decision on a new

APP expected to be available to the public in June, 2015.

After asking the public for input, a committee selected My-

Pasco as the name of the new APP. The winning entry was

decided by an internal committee working on the APP devel-

opment.

Three individuals came up with the name, MyPasco and will

receive a small prize as special thanks for their input. In all

more than 250 people made suggestions on naming the new

APP which is still being developed.

The new app will be designed for both Android and Apple

products and will have a variety of features including the

ability to view County Commission meetings, a live stream of

Pasco County Television, press releases, National Weather

Service alerts, park information, library locator, library cata-

logue search, social media access, emergency management

information, animal services, pet adoption services, road

blockage and commuter information.

“When we were looking at the entries the committee just

looked at the APP name entries, I didn’t want to know who

made each entry,” said Doug Tobin, Public Information Of-

ficer for Pasco County Government. “This will be a great tool

for citizens to have information at their fingertips by using

their smart phones. We also hope to get information from

citizens who participate in monthly surveys. We hope to pro-

vide our Commissioners with more real time survey infor-

mation throughout the year once we roll out the APP.”

The Public Information Office has worked closely with other

departments such as Pasco County Information Technology,

Planning and Development, Metropolitan Planning Organiza-

tion and a committee made up of Performance Development

Team members.

Citizens currently can participate until May 31st in an annual

online Citizen Survey available at the following link. https://www.surveymonkey.

Earns Designation for Elder Care

Bayfront Health Dade City has received designation as a NICHE Hospital. The NICHE (Nurses Improving Care for Healthsystem Elders) designation indicates a hospi-tal's commitment to elder care excellence.

Our community’s growing number of people over age 65 makes improving geriatric nursing competencies even more important. Bayfront Health Dade City pur-sued the NICHE program because it is designed to strengthen the quality of care for older adult patients by increasing awareness of geriatric issues, improving staff competence in nursing care of the elderly, and support-ing the implementation of hospital geriatric protocols.

“The NICHE designation signals our dedication to providing patient-centered care for older adult patients,” said Shauna McKinnon, Chief Executive Officer. “Through our participation in the NICHE program — a leading elder care nursing program — we are able to offer evidence-based, interdisciplinary approaches that promote better outcomes, positive experiences, and im-proved care for older adults. This leads to greater satis-faction rates for our patients, their families and our staff.”

“Bayfront Health Dade City shows a tremendous com-mitment to meet the most critical challenge of our times - quality care of older adults,” says Barbara Bricoli, MPA, Executive Director - NICHE. “The hospital’s dedication to drive continuous improvement processes and enhance care marks them as leaders in the field.”

Bayfront Health Dade City is the first hospital in Pasco County to receive NICHE designation.

Update on Florida TRADE. As of 3/31/15, 2723 students have en-rolled in Florida TRADE programs across the state; 1453 students have com-pleted a Program of

Study; 1342 have earned at least once credential, and 203 students have earned multiple credentials. With your support, 431 students have been placed in intern-ship and job opportunities. We could not accomplish any of the above numbers without the strong support of our Career Source Boards, our EDCs, our Chambers of Commerce, the Manufacturing Association of Florida Center for Excellence, and you, our manufacturing partners.

Though these numbers are impressive, they are not enough. We need to do more. Last month we launched our ”Drive to 1000” campaign to place 1000 Florida TRADE students into jobs by 4/1/16. Several of you have gone online and have committed to hiring at least one of our students by 4/1/16. Some of you hired our students during our career fair on April 22, 2015. For those that have made that commitment, we thank you for your support and we are truly appreciative that you have responded to our call. For those who are still con-sidering this decision, we ask you to take 4 minutes to watch our new video, “Florida TRADE: The Smart Choice”. In this video, you will hear from your fellow manufacturers about their experiences hiring FL TRADE students. You may watch our video by click-ing on this link. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L13WvYq8G68.

After viewing, please support us by clicking on the fol-lowing link to make your commitment to hire at least one Florida TRADE student. http://web.spcollege.edu/survey/18135.

Thank you and as always, please contact us if we can be of any assistance.

Food Policy Advisory Council

Adopted by Pasco County

PASCO COUNTY --- The Pasco Board of County Commissioners adopted by unanimous decision a

resolution establishing the Pasco County Food Policy Advisory Council (FPAC) on May 19, 2015.

With this resolution, Pasco County becomes a leader in the Tampa Bay Region, as the only

county with an active Food Policy Council. Pasco County joins only three other counties in the state with an active Food Policy Councils – Duval, Mi-

ami-Dade, and Orange.

The mission of the Pasco Food Policy Advisory Council is to facilitate the development of respon-sible policies improving access to culturally ap-

propriate, nutritionally sound and affordable food produced in Pasco County. County Commission-ers will appoint the members of the council, which will include representatives from various sectors of the community, including: agriculture, health

and human services, education, market manage-ment, and several others.

The first task of the council will be to conduct a countywide food assessment. This assessment will help identify resources, needs, and specific challenges that relate to Pasco County’s food

system. The finding of the assessment will pro-vide the County an opportunity to address gaps

within the current food system.

Several individuals were vital in bringing this res-olution and council to fruition. Commissioner,

Kathryn Starkey, supported the establishment of a planning group, with Todd Engala as staff liai-son. In addition to County support, residents par-ticipated in the development of this council: Travis

Morehead (Farmer and Business Owner), Dell deChant (Educator, USF and Environmental Committee Chair, City of New Port Richey),

Deanna Krautner (State of Florida, Department of Health/Pasco County), and Dr. Whitney Elmore

(UF/IFAS Extension/Pasco County

Extension Director).

Pasco’s Operation Green Light Meant “Go” for Suc-cess! he Office of the Pasco County Clerk & Comp-troller provided a one-time opportunity on April 18, 2015, for citizens to pay in full their overdue Pasco County traffic tickets, as well as court costs and fines, restore their driving privileges, and save a 25% collections surcharge. The Pasco Clerk & Comptroller’s Office served 302 customers and col-lected a total of $81,351 during the Operation Green Light. Event Statistics

• 170 customers were assisted in person, totaling

$52,759

132 customers were assisted by the call centers, totaling $28,592.

136 customers were eligible to have their driver’s license reinstated in Pasco County. “Our team was pleased to assist customers who par-ticipated in Operation Green Light with the goal to reinstate their licenses. Our justice partners worked diligently in partnership with us to make the Pasco County Operation Green Light event successful for our customers. I want to thank our Office team-mates, the Sixth Judicial Circuit Court, the Pasco Sheriff’s Office, Pasco County Board of County Commissioners, and the Pasco Tax Collector’s Of-fice for their assistance with Operation Green Light. Additionally, I want to thank the media and our community partners, including chambers of com-merce, universities, colleges, businesses, non-profit entities, and the cities in our community that shared public announcements about this event,” said Dr. Paula O’Neil, Pasco Clerk & Comptroller

The Office of Paula S. O'Neil, Ph.D., would like to inform Pasco County citi-zens of a revived fraud scheme so they may protect themselves from becoming victims. Scammers posing as law en-forcement officers from the Warrants Di-vision call citizens threatening jail time for failing to appear for jury service. Be advised: Jury summonses are sent through regular mail. If you failed to appear for jury service, an order to show cause may be mailed to you to appear before the court. The Clerk & Comptroller's Office never contacts jurors who failed to appear by phone. Additionally, law enforcement would not demand payment, in lieu of arrest, due to failure to appear for jury ser-

vice. The Clerk & Comptroller's Office is working closely with the Pasco County Sheriff's Office to keep the public in-formed and will remain vigilant as the investigation continues. If you receive any suspicious or unsolicited communi-cation about jury service, contact the Pas-co County Clerk & Comptroller's Office at (800) 368-2411 x8031.

Newsletter

PASCO SHERIFF’S OFFICE NEWSLETTER

June 2015

There’s always talk of how we can work better together, whether it’s working hand-in-hand as parents or siblings simp-ly joining together to get the chores done at home. I believe the best time to instill that sense of collaboration is early in a child’s life, which can create a foundation for them the rest of their lives. The Pasco Sheriff’s Office sponsors the Pas-co Police Athletic League (PPAL) which is a youth football and cheerleading program that spans all of Pasco County. Each year, our coaches mentor about 1,500 kids between the ages of 5 to 13 for football, and 3 to 14 for cheerleading. Kids can sign up for PPAL now, practice begins in July, and the season runs from August to November.

We have teams in Dade City, Land O’ Lakes, Hudson, New Port Richey, River Ridge, Trinity, Wesley Chapel and Zephyrhills. The Pasco Police Athletic League was formed more than 40 years ago to accomplish a number of goals, which continues to be important today: Inspire kids to practice the ideals of sportsmanship and physical fitness in an effort to promote teamwork, dedication and discipline; promote safety; use of sound football fundamentals; encourag-ing a healthy lifestyle; and to foster a healthy relationship between the community and our agency, among other objec-tives. The 10-game football season culminates with a Super Bowl and this year we’ve even added a Pro Bowl. There is NO travel requirements out of the county, unless cheerleaders wish to join some competitions that are not mandatory.

Many leagues need volunteers to assist as coaches, board members, concessions workers, and other duties to support the children on the field. PPAL has the most stringent requirements for volunteers than any other youth sports program in the Tampa Bay area, and the Pasco Sheriff’s Office conducts a thorough background check on all applicants for the safety of the children. If you are interested to volunteer in one of the leagues, go to www.ppalregistration.com to fill out an application.

Your impact can also be felt by donating to the league. Every year, PPAL helps pay the registration fees for many un-derprivileged children who cannot afford the cost to play. Unfortunately, for many of these kids, their time on the field provides the only interaction with positive adult role models in their life and the chance to have fun with other kids their age. PPAL has been a shining light in so many lives of children, some who have even gone on to play in college, the NFL, or have become leaders in our community. Let’s continue to provide our children the support to get them and keep them on the right path!

For more information on PPAL, including to sign up your child, donate, or for more information, please visit www.pascopal.com.

ExpressVote Certification Marks the End

of Touchscreen Voting for Pasco County

With the Division of Elections' certification of the ExpressVote marking device, Pasco County

will move forward in the final phase of compliance with the 2007 legislation that mandated all

Florida counties to replace touchscreen voting equipment with optical scan voting equip-

ment. Although Pasco County has been using optical scan equipment for the past seven years, the

ExpressVote will replace the last of the iVotronic touchscreen voting machines used currently in

Pasco County by persons with disabilities.

The ExpressVote system combines paper-based voting with touchscreen technology and features

both audio and visual formats. For those with visual limitations, there is a contrast button that

changes the screen to high contrast and an optional zoom button, or a voter may opt to use the au-

dio feature which uses a handheld console to make ballot selections. Voters using the ExpressVote

system are given the opportunity to review their selections and to make changes before printing

their voted ballot for the DS200 optical scanner.

The elections' office will receive the new equipment in the next few months and will immediately

begin preparations for deployment in the 2016 election cycle. After staff is fully trained, proce-

dures will be written and training manuals prepared for the pollworkers.

ExpressVote allows all voters, including those with special needs, to vote independently and to

cast their ballots privately and autonomously; however, the Certification by the Division of Elec-

tions has been granted for use solely by persons with disabilities. ExpressVote meets and exceeds

the rigorous 2005 Voluntary Voting Systems Guidelines and HAVA section 301 accessibility re-

quirements.

Zephyrhills Chamber Executive Director

to step down in July

From Release May 5, 2015—Greater Zephyrhills Chamber of Commerce

Executive Director Vonnie Mikkelsen announced her resignation today hav-

ing accepted a position as executive director/CEO of the Chamber of Com-

merce in Springfield, Ore.

Mikkelsen’s final day will be July 2 and she will begin her new position

July 13. The Springfield Chamber is located 10 miles from the rural city of

Junction City, Ore. where Mikkelsen grew up.

“I have grown very fond of Zephyrhills, and so the decision has been a dif-

ficult one. But I also know that with change comes endless possibilities. I’m

certain that the next Executive Director will find, like I did, that this position offers a rare opportunity to work with re-

markable people and serve in a place that is truly special,“ Mikkelsen said.

The Zephyrhills Chamber has formed a search committee to find a replacement for Mikkelsen by the end of June. Cham-

ber president Carolyn Hodges said that applications will be accepted between May 11 and June 1. A job description for

the position may be found on the Chamber website ZephyrhillsChamber.org.

“Vonnie has been a tireless advocate for the Zephyrhills community and an inspiring leader for the Chamber of Com-

merce. We’re excited for her to be returning to her roots in Oregon,” Hodges said. “It’s a new chapter for the Zephyrhills

Chamber,” Hodges continued, “and we are looking forward to finding the person who is the right fit and can build on the

foundation that Vonnie established over the past six years.”

Mikkelsen came to the Zephyrhills Chamber in 2009.
