MARIE GREGORY CHAPTER MEETING

The March meeting will be held in the Poynor Room at 10:00 a.m. on Tues-day, March 12. Lee Garey and Betty McEachin are the hostesses. All women of the parish are invited to attend.

MAMIE POYNOR CHAPTER - SCHEDULE CHANGE The Mamie Poynor Chapter will not meet in April or May. Watch for news about resumption of meetings in the fall.

MEALS ON WHEELS: MILES AND MILES OF THANKS

Warmest thanks to Kathy and Marty Chmielecki, Harry Greenleaf, Red Hodge, and Clark Reifsnider for fulfilling St. John’s recent Meals on Wheels duties. Our rotation in this important community ministry rolled around again the week of January 28-February 1. Kathy, Marty, Harry, Red, and Clark de-livered meals each day that week on our behalf.

NEW WOMEN’S BIBLE STUDY BEGINS APRIL 8 Jonah: Navigating a Life Interrupted by Priscilla Shirer begins on Monday, April 8 and continues through Monday, May 20. Two classes will be offered each week: one at 10:00 a.m. and the other at 6:00 p.m. This is a seven-week study. All women of the parish are invited to participate. Both classes will meet in the Poynor Room. The publisher of this video series describes the study as follows: “What do we do when God interrupts our lives? Many times, like Jonah, we

run! In this 7-session Bible study, Priscilla redefines interruption and shows

that interruption is actually God's invitation to do something beyond our wild-

est dreams. When Jonah was willing to allow God to interrupt his life, the re-

sult was revival in an entire city.” So, how exactly does Jonah’s journey relate to yours? As we look back on the big picture of life, it’s easy to see how God worked things together for good, but wouldn’t it be great if we could embrace the challenging times instead of running from them, like Jonah did? If you want to learn how to change your perspective when divine interruptions happen, join us for Priscilla Shirer’s study, Jonah: Navigating a Life Interrupted. The only cost involved is the price of the workbook, which is $12. Please con-tact Lori Worn at 773-8268 or [email protected] to register for this course.

TUESDAY, APRIL 16, 6:00 P.M.

VVVVictory with VVVViennas … OOOOne SSSSausage at a TTTTime

All women of the parish are invited to the annual Spring Salad Supper, scheduled to be held in the parish hall on April 16. The speaker will be Barbara Mains, who is with the Help 4 Kids organization. Help 4 Kids is an all-volunteer organization that started in 1989 in Horry County. The goal of the organization is to help children with school needs so they can walk into the classroom with head held high and feeling on par with their peers. Help 4 Kids sponsors the Back Pack Buddies. They furnish weekend food bags to children who are at risk of going hun-gry when school is out. One of the items that is packed in every brown bag is a can of Vienna Sausages. We are ask-ing our women to bring Vienna Sausages or a monetary donation to the Salad Supper to help the Back Pack Bud-dies.

As the date for our Diocesan Convention draws

near, the Apostle Paul’s admonition to “pray with-

out ceasing” becomes even more important. Many

people will be involved in various aspects of the

preparation beginning on Thursday, March 7, and

continuing on Friday and Saturday, March 8 and

9. We need to pray for these people as they per-

form their service of setting up the Performing

Arts Center, flower arranging, greeting, rehearsing

music, ushering, directing the parking, etc. We

also need to pray for Bishop Lawrence, for the

clergy, and for the delegates as they seek God’s

will as they conduct the business of our Diocese

during the Convention. We are seeking to cover every area of our Diocesan

Convention in prayer, beginning on Thursday and

continuing on Friday. We will also have prayer

teams who will be joining in prayer on Saturday

during the Convention. We are asking you—as

individuals, as families, or as small groups—to

make a commitment to pray for one hour on

Thursday or Friday, March 7 or 8. If you would

like to be a part of this prayer ministry, please call

Marli Thompson (673-0152) as soon as possible to

sign up. As Christians, we need to devote ourselves to

prayer and to pray “with one accord,” for God has

promised to hear us when we pray. Please be an

active part of this prayer ministry! May God Bless you!

Church on August 28, 1976. It was the first time

since 1944 that the convention had been held in

the Pee Dee. All Saints had been established for

only 18 years at that point and had more than

quadrupled its membership in that short time. All

Saints was established in 1958 and seeded by 80

communicants from St. John’s.

DIOCESAN CONVENTION: A CALL TO PRAYER

ST. JOHN’S KIDS HOPE USA Eight mentors, their prayer partners, and eight selected school children at Delmae Elementary School make up the Kids Hope team at St. John’s. The mentors - Kelly Lyles, Kerry Rathbun, Sandra Dekle, Kathy Chmielecki, Rev. Luke Lucas, Marty Chmielecki, Clark Reifsnider, and Bea King - talk about the personal enrichment they experience mentoring one child for one hour each week. Their prayer partners, lead by Kay Fryman, add strength to the experience through their prayerful

intercessions. Kids Hope USA is in its second year at St. John’s and is planning to continue its outreach to children at Delmae next year. Are you interested in being part of this life experience? Mentor training is held in late summer and mentoring activities begin the week after Labor Day when school enrollments are settled and children who need mentors are identified by teachers. The children range in age from five to nine years old. Nancy Granath, assistant principal at Delmae, spoke of the value of Kids Hope when she said, “I can see the body language of the children change when the Kids Hope mentor enters the building.” The mentors are truly “walking in the shoes of Je-sus” when they take these children under their wings. (See Ms. Granath’s note below.) You can be a mentor or get further information about Kids Hope by calling or e-mailing Diane Welsh at 629-1017 or [email protected].

KIDS HOPE USA creates church-school partnerships that pair church members with at-risk

kids in supportive, mentoring relationships. KIDS HOPE USA mentors spend just one hour

per week reading, talking, playing, and listening to a child at school. By helping the child

feel loved and valued, they help that child to learn, grow and succeed.

Dear Church Family, We would like to send our heartfelt thanks to your congregation for sponsoring

the KIDS HOPE USA program at our school, to Diane Welsh for her vision and or-

ganization of the program, and especially to those eight individuals who have be-

come mentors to eight of our students. Although these men and women, some of

whom are in their second year, are known as mentors, they are so much more to

our boys and girls! As they visit from week to week, we see improvements in both

academics and behavior and are excited to see how much difference one hour a

week can make in the life of a child! We would love to have more of you join with

us in this ministry and we invite you to visit our school at any time.

THE STATIONS OF THE CROSS Daughters of the King at St. John’s are studying The Stations of the Cross during Lent. The “stations” were originally the real places in The Holy Land that pilgrims visited to recall the passion, death, and resurrection of Christ. During the 1500’s, small shrines were substituted for the real places “on the way to the cross” and a pilgrim could make his/her journey around the church to remember the events of Holy Week. We would like to recommend a helpful website with information that is free and

easily downloaded about The Stations of the Cross: www.creighton.edu/

CollaborativeMinistry/online.html. There is a lovely painting for each Station of

the Cross and text to guide prayer and meditation during Lent or anytime that one

would like to make the journey of Holy Week. The Stations of the Cross offer a

way to recall that our Lord suffered because of his love for each of us and his de-

sire for us to have abundant life now and forever. Thanks be to God for His love.

“I AM” … THE GOSPEL TRUTH

Lenten Study Continues Through March 21 This year’s Lenten study invites us to consider Jesus’ identity in light of the Gospel of John. Jesus identifies Himself in several ways throughout this gospel (see speaker subjects at right). Delve into the language, symbolism, scriptural connections, and theology that rest beneath these statements that Jesus used to reveal Himself to us. Each weekly session begins with Holy Eucharist at 11:00 a.m. A simple lunch of soup and sandwiches is served in the fellowship hall beginning at 11:45, and talks are presented from about 12:05-12:50. Come for the entire gathering or only for those elements that your schedule permits. (Please note that the series includes a Sunday morning speaker on March 10.) A donation of $5.00 is requested to help defray the cost of lunch. If you plan to have lunch, please call the parish office 48 hours in advance so that adequate preparations can be made. The series is open to the public; please encourage your friends to come!

MAKE YOUR

BIRTHDAY COUNT Do you know about the birthday

golden apple? We all know that

weekly birthdays and anniversaries

are recognized during announce-

ments on Sundays. However, you

may not have noticed that an acolyte

stands nearby holding a golden ap-

ple. Parishioners are encouraged to

place in the apple a gift of $1 for each

year being celebrated. The birthday

funds are accumulated and given for

outreach purposes twice a year. If

you have an idea for an outreach min-

istry that might be a good recipient of

our birthday funds, let one of the war-

dens know.

Christ our Lord. Amen.
