Letter to the Editor

BREC Superintendent Seeks to Clarify Spring Tax ElectionI am writing to correct an error that appeared in a news story in your paper last month. As you

reported, BREC is indeed inviting residents from across East Baton Rouge Parish to help us cre-ate a new strategic plan to guide improvements to our parks system for the next 10 years. The Imagine Your Parks plan which we crafted after much public input, was implemented in 2004 and has resulted in the construction of 12 community parks – including the one in Zachary—five dog parks, Liberty Lagoon Water Park, fishing ponds, a growing trails system as well as renovations to neighborhood parks and special use facilities such as BREC’s Baton Rouge Zoo.

Now it is time to create a new strategic plan and we are holding meetings across the parish from now through the month of March. Please visit this link for a full list of meeting places and dates: http://www.brec.org/index.cfm/page/2924/n/330.

The story in the Zachary Post erred by reporting that BREC is requesting a new tax in April. It is vital that your readers understand we are not asking for a new tax. On April 5, we will ask voters to renew the existing property tax millage that will allow us to maintain the great new parks and facilities that we have built or renovated. The millage will fund nearly half of BREC’s operating budget and all of our capital improvements. According to the EBR Tax Assessor’s Office, the tax will cost $108.50 per year for a house valued at $250,000 or $46.50 per year on a house valued at $150,000. The tax must be renewed every ten years and helps maintain our 181 parks as well as programs such as summer camps, holiday camps and the recent campout at Zachary Community Park. It will also help fund the renovation and enhancement of existing BREC ball fields that we will address in collaboration with the City of Zachary.

Ten years ago, we worked with your readers to help imagine a new park system. Back then, we had an aging system mostly comprised of small neighborhood parks and special use facilities such as the Zoo and golf courses such as Beaver Creek. Our work isn’t finished but we hope your readers will agree that we’ve kept our promises and work with us to continue to imagine our parks.

Thank you,

Carolyn McKnightBREC Superintendent

Editor’s Note: The Zachary Post feels that the information was reported correctly and not in error. BREC is asking for a new tax equivalent to the expiring 10-year tax. In Louisiana we have perpetual (ongoing) taxes and fixed time length taxes which expire at a given time. The BREC taxes are not perpetual, thus the April tax election is for a new tax to replace the expiring 10-year tax.

Financial Peace University Enrolling at New Pilgrim Baptist Church

More than two million families have positively changed their finan-cial future through Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University (FPU). The nine-week course provides fam-ilies and individuals with practical tools to gain control of their finances and set themselves up for long-term financial success. The course meets once a week where a different les-son is taught by Dave on DVD fol-lowed by a small-group discussion. Lessons include budgeting, relation-ships and money, getting out of debt, saving for emergencies and invest-ing. FPU will be held in Zachary at:

New Pilgrim Baptist Church lo-cated at 4277 Old Weis Road in Zach-ary. The classes will begin Sunday, March 2, 2014 at 8:00 AM. Contact Robert Snowden at (225)654-6139 for more information or to register.

Through common-sense princi-ples and small-group accountability, FPU gives people the tools they need

to change their behavior and succeed financially. On average families who complete FPU pay off $5,300 and save $2,700 in the first 90 days. Fol-lowing the class nearly 94 percent of those families budget regularly.

“FPU will not only transform the way you handle money, but also your marriage and other areas of your life,” says Ramsey. “This isn’t a boring financial class. We make learning about money fun and easy to understand so people in every situation can benefit from the infor-mation.”

Ramsey knows first-hand the pain that financial stress can cause. After creating a net worth of more than a million dollars by age 26, he quickly lost it all. Since then Ramsey has helped families and individuals across the country learn how to get control of their finances and avoid debt so they don’t have to experi-ence the same pain he did.

Local Rancher Inspires Agriculture for a Younger GenerationBy James Ronald skains

Amelia Kent is not your typical rancher, although she and her hus-band Russell own a considerable size beef cow operation in the Fe-liciana’s. Amelia is a 2004 graduate of Wellesley College outside Bos-

ton, Massachusetts. Wellesley Col-lege for Women is often referred to as one of the seven sisters of the Ivy League schools in the northeast part of the USA.

“My roots are in agriculture, tim-ber and beef cattle,” Amelia told the Zachary POST. “I grew up on a

ranch in Colorado, then spent some of my teenage years at my grand-mother’s plant nursery and timber operation in Folsom.

I was showing beef cattle in 4-H shows by the time I was seven years old. I had two steers that weighed about 1,200 pounds each. I won first and second place in the show, but was required to sell the winner at a 4-H auction. I well remember lead-ing my steer to the loading dock to send him to the packaging house.”

“I bawled for two weeks until the check for $2,000 came in,’’ Amelia recalled. “My parents opened a sav-ings account for me at the bank, and I stopped crying. I learned an impor-tant lesson about raising cattle and the real world at an extremely early age.”

“Although it was obvious at an early age that I was rooted in the land and cow and horse operations, my dad thought that I should experi-ence another side of life. That was why I went to Wellesley College. Wellesley had no academic program

remotely related to agriculture so I got a double major in Economics and Religion.”

Wellesley, with a student popula-tion of 2,400 is Ivy League all the way. Wellesley College, with some of the world’s top undergraduate women, offers challenges to exceed each student’s own highest per-sonal and intellectual expectations. A Wellesley education fosters the highest standard of readiness for the “real world” in its graduates, in terms of ability to think, act, and contribute meaningfully and effec-tively in their chosen areas of inter-est.

“During the summer of my soph-omore years, several of my class-mates were touring Europe. One was singing at the London Opera and others were working in Paris and Rome,” Amelia recalled. “How-ever, I was working in the hayfields of Colorado, cutting hay mostly at night to make sure we got the clover blooms. Driving a tractor at night cutting hay really cut into my night-

life.”Perhaps it was destiny to return

to Louisiana in the fall of 2005. Hur-ricane Katrina had devastated her grandmother’s nationally renowned nursery in Folsom, Jenkins Nursery, home to Ms. Margie Jenkins and several varieties of Azaleas which were developed by “Ms. Margie.”

“The plant nursery was in sham-bles. We were like many people, without electricity for two weeks,” Amelia related. “Not only were the plants devastated, but so were acres and acres of prime timber land. It became my lot to help clean up the nursery and deal with the fallen tim-ber.”

“Just before Katrina hit, I had accepted a job with a ski resort in Colorado. That seemed to be my ca-reer path at the time. However, after seeing all my responsibilities back in Louisiana, I “passed” on the job at the Ski Resort. My grandfather was a logger and had accumulated a number of acres of pine timberland which was all flattened.”

Amelia started her own cattle operation after getting the proper-

ty cleaned up. Being active in the Farm Bureau and Cattlemen’s orga-nization, Amelia began to assume more roles as her cattle operation grew. At one of the organization’s meetings, she met Russell Kent, a fellow cattle rancher.

“It was kind of strange the way we met,’’ Amelia remembered. “At one of these trade meetings, we were in a group of people. I knew everyone in the group except Rus-sell, and he knew everyone but me.

They married in 2010. Now, with a combined cattle operation, Amelia takes care of the cattle and the pastures during the week while Russell continues with his job at First South Credit in Zachary. Eve-nings and weekends, the cattle op-eration is a joint effort.

Amelia attended the prestigious LSU Ag Leadership program in 2007 and 2008. She was in the 11th graduating class of the LSU Ag Leadership Program. Amelia’s in-ternational trip was to South Amer-ica where she observed cattle, row crop, and timber operations. Rus-sell is a graduate of the #12 LSU Ag

Leadership classes of 2010.Amelia and Russell are Vice-

Presidents of the Young Farmer and Ranchers of the Louisiana Farm Bu-reau Association. Recently Amelia was selected as a Panelist on the Urban Agricultural Leadership Fo-rum scheduled for February 11 in New Orleans. Amelia will discuss “Niche Beef Cattle” operations. The Agribusiness Council of Louisiana, which is sponsoring the event, at which Amelia will be a panelist, is based in New Orleans. Its mission is to foster and provide appropri-ate support for the agriculture that impact, or is shipped through, New Orleans and other parts of Louisi-ana. The purpose also includes the promotion and utilization of agri-culture products, as well as the de-velopment of leadership in agricul-ture. The term “agriculture” is used in its broadest dimension to include food, fiber, fuel and forest products.

“We also have an operation for providing grass fed beef to certain restaurants in south Louisiana,” Amelia explained. “Our cattle are raised to a weight of about 500 pounds on grass without any growth hormones or stimulants.”

“We are expanding this opera-tion to include providing what we call “freezer beef” to individuals who want custom beef cuts or a side of beef from grass feed cattle. Our select group of young cattle will be ready for the slaughterhouse by May. We’ve already started taking orders for beef.”

Writer’s note: If Amelia Kent is a prime face of the future of Agri-culture in Louisiana, then I feel confident that her generation will rise to any and all challenges.

Community leaders, students and Zachary Community School District officials gathered Friday for the dis-trict’s annual Black History Month Celebration. The theme this year fo-cused on Black History Milestones: Stories to Know. The program fea-tured interpretations in song, dance, poem, and theatre from Zachary Community School District students. Zachary Elementary School Assis-tant Principal Trudy Johnson got the evening off to a great start with a rousing welcome capturing the spirit of the event. The program also high-lighted lesser known Black History milestones including the Niagara Movement through excepts of videos from Freedom’s Song.

The program celebrated local Sto-ries to Know through a celebration of the contributions to the community of Mr. Jesse Spears, Jr. School Board Member Gaynell Young told of her experiences with Mr. Spears and his devotion to the Zachary Community Schools over time extending back to the days before desegregation. Spears then told his own story through a se-ries of video clips interspersed with images of his life in Zachary. During his time, black students in Zachary had no place to go to school beyond 8th grade. Spears told of taking the train every morning at 5:30 a.m. to Southern Lab School because his family wanted him to continue his education. He also shared stories of Northwestern’s first football team and the “Brave Backers.”

Judge Lonny Myles also shared his fondness for Mr. Spears calling him a second father to him. He said he got to know Spears well over the years because Spears is active in so many civic organizations. The two worked together closely on the for-
