Zeal for Zion November 2019 Volume 11 Zion United Church of Christ, 415 South Main Street, North Canton, Ohio 44720 “Love is a Many Splendored Thing” by Rev. Eli O. It’s not enough just to have positive thoughts about someone; we must translate those thoughts and feelings into words. Failing to do this is to take the other person for granted and manifests a self -centered, unloving attitude on our part. Praise and thankfulness are two tangible ways in which we reveal our love for another. A child who is perpetually criticized but seldom praised grows up feeling unloved and unworthy. So also in a marriage, a husband who neglects to praise his wife or thank her for the many things she does is not communicating love. If he does love her, he’s keeping it a secret. She wouldn’t have many clues to go by. She certainly doesn’t feel very cherished. The same, of course, is true of a wife’s relationship to her husband. When there are not expressions of praise and gratitude, the result is a dry, loveless marriage. Even if a flame of love had been kindled to begin with, in such a chilling, non-accepting environment, the sparks soon turn to gray ashes. Sadly, both persons in such a barren relationship are deprived of the love and closeness that should be theirs. Praise, according to the dictionary, is an expression of approval or commendation. Most often than not it relates to some characteristic of the person to whom it is addressed: “You are so talented.” “You did such a great job.” “You’re a brilliant student.” Thankfulness, on the other hand, is an expression of appreciation or gratitude for some favor or act of kindness. But praise and gratitude are often so entwined that they are almost expressed as one. “Thank you for coming to my rescue. You are so kind and thoughtful.” “I really appreciated the wonderful dinner: You’re a terrific cook!” These two statements consist of praise and gratitude laced together, and rightly so. My friend, thankfulness and praise are positive forms of affirmation which engender positive responses. They are the stuff which warm, loving relationships are fostered – not only with other people, but between ourselves and God. Little wonder, then, that the psalmist tells God’s people, “Enter into His gates with thanksgiving, and into His courts with praise; be thankful unto Him and bless His name”, Psalm 100:4. And in Hebrews 13:15 we read, “Let us offer the sacrifice (or gift) of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips, giving thanks to His name”. One of the marks of a believer is an attitude of gratitude. As the believer walks through life, his/her heart is filled with appreciation for all that God has done and continues to do. Scripture says we should be “giving thanks always for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ”, Ephesians 5:20. Being thankful day by day isn’t always easy. We live in a world full of discord, adversity, sadness and heartache, and as believers we don’t automatically side-step all the tragedies of life. But we do have Christ who is with us and comforts us in the difficult times of life. We can be thankful. Telling God “Thank You” is a sure way of deepening and expressing our love. And love is a many splendored thing. “Love is a Many Splendored Thing”

by Rev. Eli O. Klingensmith

Many of us are old enough to remember Andy Williams who sang the song, “Love Is a Many Splendored Thing”. That

title also became the title of a couple of movies.

My friend, the “many splendored” beauty of love can be demonstrated in a multitude of ways. But one of the most

effective is through the medium of praise and appreciation. It’s not enough just to have positive thoughts about someone; we

must translate those thoughts and feelings into words.

Failing to do this is to take the other person for granted and manifests a self-centered, unloving attitude on our part.

Praise and thankfulness are two tangible ways in which we reveal our love for another. A child who is perpetually

criticized but seldom praised grows up feeling unloved and unworthy.

So also in a marriage, a husband who neglects to praise his wife or thank her for the many things she does is not

communicating love. If he does love her, he’s keeping it a secret. She wouldn’t have many clues to go by. She certainly

doesn’t feel very cherished. The same, of course, is true of a wife’s relationship to her husband. When there are not

expressions of praise and gratitude, the result is a dry, loveless marriage. Even if a flame of love had been kindled to begin

with, in such a chilling, non-accepting environment, the sparks soon turn to gray ashes. Sadly, both persons in such a barren

relationship are deprived of the love and closeness that should be theirs.

Praise, according to the dictionary, is an expression of approval or commendation. Most often than not it relates to

some characteristic of the person to whom it is addressed: “You are so talented.” “You did such a great job.” “You’re a brill iant

student.”

Thankfulness, on the other hand, is an expression of appreciation or gratitude for some favor or act of kindness. But

praise and gratitude are often so entwined that they are almost expressed as one. “Thank you for coming to my rescue. You

are so kind and thoughtful.” “I really appreciated the wonderful dinner: You’re a terrific cook!” These two statements consist of

praise and gratitude laced together, and rightly so.

My friend, thankfulness and praise are positive forms of affirmation which engender positive responses. They are the

stuff which warm, loving relationships are fostered – not only with other people, but between ourselves and God. Little

wonder, then, that the psalmist tells God’s people, “Enter into His gates with thanksgiving, and into His courts with praise; be

thankful unto Him and bless His name”, Psalm 100:4. And in Hebrews 13:15 we read, “Let us offer the sacrifice (or gift) of

praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips, giving thanks to His name”.

One of the marks of a believer is an attitude of gratitude. As the believer walks through life, his/her heart is filled with

appreciation for all that God has done and continues to do. Scripture says we should be “giving thanks always for all things to

God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ”, Ephesians 5:20.

Being thankful day by day isn’t always easy. We live in a world full of discord, adversity, sadness and heartache, and

as believers we don’t automatically side-step all the tragedies of life. But we do have Christ who is with us and comforts us in

the difficult times of life. We can be thankful.

Telling God “Thank You” is a sure way of deepening and expressing our love. And love is a many splendored thing.

the event. Special thanks to our awesome MC, Rick Fisher,

Surviving the Holidays offers hope and help

as you navigate the Christmas Season.

Wondering how you will survive the weeks surrounding

Thanksgiving and Christmas? Are you dreading these

holidays, knowing that everything has changed and that

happy memories from past years can't be recreated?

Our “Surviving the Holidays” seminar is especially for people

who are grieving a loved one's death. You'll learn:

How to deal with the many emotions you'll face during the holidays.

What to do about traditions and other coming changes.

Helpful tips for surviving social events.

How to discover hope for your future.

This seminar is open to members of Zion United Church of

Christ and the surrounding community. If you know someone

who would benefit from this seminar, invite them and come

with them for support.

Zion's GriefShare Team is Connie Hausenfleck, Barbara

Steinbauer and Janet Swihart.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Join us on Sunday, November 3 at 5 pm as

we view the movie God is Not Dead 3. In

the movie an atheist Philosophy professor

(Kevin Sorbo) plans to forego “dusty argu-

ments” in his class. He insists the new students declare that

“God is dead.” One student, Josh (Shane Harper), a devout

Christian refuses to disavow his faith. Josh must prove the

existence of God or else his college professor will fail him.

Thank you, Christian Ed Team, for hosting this evening and

providing the pizza, snacks, and drinks.

We Give Thee But Thine Own

Stewardship Sunday

about the November Stewardship Campaign. In the envelope

was a letter, 2020 Pledge Card, 2020 Time & Talent Card

(two-sided), Pledge for Prayer Card, and a return envelope.

We encourage everyone, youth through seniors, to partici-

pate. If you are in need of more cards, they are available in

the Cloister or you may call the Church Office and additional

cards will be sent to you. Please mail or bring back your cards

Heavenly Father's guidance will accomplish miracles!

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

There is a Congregational Meeting called

for Sunday, November 10, 2019

immediately following the worship service.

A vote will be held to address the Organ

Renovation. You will be asked to vote on

one of three proposals.

Proposal #1: To renovate and repair the existing pipe organ

to bring it back to its original condition. This proposal would

cost approximately $195,000.00 and would be paid through

our existing Organ fund that has been funded by our

congregation contributions.

Proposal #2: To accept Proposal #1 and to add the following:

Upgrade the technology and sound of the pipe organ.

Relocate the pipe organ to the Chancel and renovate the

Chancel to increase the sound output and to make it handicap

accessible. The estimated cost of this proposal is

$435,000.00. ($195,000.00 from proposal #1 and

$240,000.00 additional cost for the Chancel renovations and

additional pipe organ upgrades.) The additional $240,000.00

would require a Capital Campaign.

Proposal #3: To forgo the aforementioned proposals and

make no renovations or repairs to the pipe organ and the

Chancel. This would keep the Organ Fund at its present

amount and allow it to accrue interest. This fund can be used

only for our pipe organ.

On behalf of your Zion Consistory, I ask the entire

Congregation to attend the Congregational Meeting on

November 10, 2019, cast your ballot regarding our Pipe

Organ proposals. If you are unable to attend; however,

Absentee Ballots will be available in the Church Office

November 4-8 from 9 am – 4 pm.

Thank you,

Rick Fisher, Consistory President

Advent Taizé Service

Zion will host a Taizé Meditative Advent

Worship Service on Tuesday, December

10 at 730 pm in Zion’s Sanctuary. Taizé is

an ecumenical monastic order located in the south of

Burgundy, France in a small village called Taizé. A Taizé

worship service involves sung and chanted prayers,

meditation, a period of silence and liturgical readings. There is

no preaching. While Taizé worship as practiced in the

Monastic Community cannot be simply imitated, it has been

adopted by many Christian communities throughout the world.
