1. Youth Education Outreaches
The most progress of the chapter this year was that we have built long-time and
stable connections with two high schools in Hangzhou, China. We promised to
take advantages of our knowledge to help teenagers in the high schools, fostering
their interests in optics and other sciences and broadening their horizon on this
information society. Of course, we can get more than we expect since teaching
and discussing can help us find the problems and blanks in our own knowledge. In
the meantime, it is always fun to be together with teenagers.
● “Photonics Tour—a Visit to the Photonics Labs and Entrepreneurships with
Teenagers”
The chapter held the “Photonics Tour” with teenagers from Changhe high school on
May 6, 2012. This university and factory located activity aimed at fostering teenagers’
interests in sciences and letting them know how knowledge can be changed to
products by means of wonderful lectures, vivid experiments and a visit to factories.
On the day, about 70 teenagers and their teachers arrived in COER lab in Zhejiang
University. Members showed them the amazing phenomena of light by using the tools
in the Optic Suitcase, told them what are bio-photonics, integrated photonics and
meta-materials, showed them how to realize optical communication and other
applications of the fiber. They were so attracted as to almost miss the lunch time.
After lunch, a couple of our members and other Master and PhD students went with
the teenager to factories in Fuyang, a hi-tech industrial zone of Hangzhou. We saw
how to produce fibers and change them to cables and how to produce PLC (Planar
Light-wave Circuits) devices. Not only did the teenagers think that was wonderful,
but our members learnt so much new. Below are the pictures:

Luckily, our activity has been reported by several media, including the website of
the Optics Department of Zhejiang University
(http://opt.zju.edu.cn/redir.php?catalog_id=26820&object_
id=88880) and the website of Changhe high school

● Summer camp for new students from Changhe high school
Every summer, the Changhe high school holds a summer camp for its new students.
Since we have built a stable contact, this summer camp had a new part, which was
visiting the COER lab to know about the most advanced technology in the world.
Same as the last activity, our members showed them bio-photonics, integrated
photonics and optical communications by using PPT, vivid experiments and Q&A
formats. They thought such activities were wonderful and gave many thanks to the
chapter and our members.
We thought such activities should be held frequently, doing our best to give
every teenager in the high school a chance to touch the high technology
personally.

● "outreach" program: outreach to kids and get them interested in photonics
A joint program was hold in Xue Jun high school on July 7, 2012. We invited John
Samuelson, a master student in Engineering Physics at the Royal Institute of Technology
(KTH) in Stockholm, Sweden. He was currently participating in a student exchange project
with the Center for Optical and Electromagnetic Research at Zhejiang University.
Due to China’s outstanding results in international student comparisons, such as the PISA
evaluations, the Chinese educational system has really caught my eye and he would love to
find out more about it. Therefore we contacted Hangzhou Xue Jun high school to get the
opportunity to hold this activity by visiting a Chinese school and get a classroom perspective.
During the class, we introduced SPIE student chapter, our universities, and our major
classes including photonics. Then we had a dialogue with the students to exchange our ideas
on study method, school life and different cultures.
It was very successful. We hope it also does facilitate our collaborations with high school in
the future.

2. Soccer Activities (We formed a team and made the CHAMPION!)
We formed and sponsored a soccer team to participate the college’s second soccer
championship and we made the final CHAMPION!
We were known of each other in the first championship and found out a lot of our SPIE
chapter members are interested in soccer, so we found a team and at last, by the great effort
of every member, we made the final champion! Be proud of our chapter members!

3. A series of activities and communications.
Attending the 11th Annual Student Chapter Leadership Workshop and the
Optics + Photonics 2012 Conference.
During August 10 to 15, one of our members was invited by SPIE to attend the
11th Annual Student Chapter Leadership Workshop and the Optics + Photonics
2012 Conference on behalf of our Zhejiang University chapter of SPIE. This
annual conference was held by SPIE, at a very beautiful sea-side city, San Diego,
California. Every year SPIE strive to create a fun and informative series of events
for over 100 student attendees from all over the world.
On Saturday 11 August, I joined the workshop co-facilitated by Dr. Sherry
Nooravi, Principal of Strategy Meets Performance. In which I understand
communication styles, MBTI assessments, and more effective intereactions.
The O+P conference began after the leadership workshop. We chose the topics of
interest and learned a lot. We different chapter leaders come together to discuss and
communicate with each other.
I also participated in Optics Outreach Olympics & Student Social. What’s more I
got the second prize in the competition!
I definitely learned a lot through the conference and brought much information
back to our chapter and will serve the chapter better!

4. Invited Distinguished reports and communications.
a) Invite Dr. Jean-luc Doumont to give a series talks about effective
communication (Visiting Lecturer program)
On Oct 29 & 30 2012, Dr. Jean-luc Doumont, Founding partner of Principiae, is
invited by us (collaborated with Tsinghua Univ. chapter, BUPT chapter and
Shanghai Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics Club) to give a series talk about
Effective communication (oral presentations, scientific writing, graphical displays). We held two
talks in Zijingang campus and Yuquan campus and made a great success!

b) Inviting Dr. Tingye Li, gave the chapter a special visit.
On June 6, 2012, Dr, Tingye Li, the former chair of OSA and the world-known
expert on optical communication visited Zhejiang University. Fortunately, he gave
the chapter a special visit because of the care for SPIE&OSA chapters and young
researchers. That was great news to us. We reported the situation of the chapter to
him, asked questions about how to develop and take advantages of the chapter and
discussed scientific problems with him. He generously gave us great praise and
encouraged us to be better. And he also told us to be opener and strengthen the
connection internationally, which was just we wanted to do. One can learn much
from a master and we were no exception. Below is the picture:

chapter, and Dr. Jianjun He is the guider of the chapter;
5. Propagate the activities held by Zhejiang Univ. Chapter of SPIE on the quarterly
magazine of our research center.
The magazine is called ‘Photonics in Zijin’. We list the lectures, seminars and other student
activities held by our chapter in order to introduce our chapter to more people and attract more
students in our university to join us.
