DESCRIPTION
Zhongshan used to be named Xiangshan, a county established in 1152 and geographically included Macao and Zhuhai. The great democratic visionary Dr. Sun Yat-sen (also Sun Zhongshan) was born in Xiangshan. When he passed away in 1925, Xiangshan was renamed Zhongshan, becoming the only Chinese city named after a Chinese hero. Zhongshan was upgraded as a prefecture-level municipality in 1988. It covers an area of 1,800 km2 with a registered population of some 3.12 million. There are 24 townships and districts under its administration. Zhongshan is the ancestral hometown of some 800,000 overseas Chinese living in 90 countries and regions in the world.
