HAN Guiding Principles
■ Supports a secure 2-way communication between the AMI Network and the HAN
■ Supports load control integration (e.g., distributed resource dispatch / control / relaying)
■ Provides direct access to usage and other meter data (e.g., kWHr, KW, Voltage, etc.)
■ Provides a platform for future customer owned products which leverage meter data and utility/grid information
■ Supports three types of communications: public price signaling, consumer specific signaling and control signaling

signaling and control signaling
■ Supports communications to other HAN Devices with metering capability (e.g., gas and/or water meter communication, EV sub-metering, PV sub-metering, etc.)
■ AMI Network interface to HAN interface is based on open standards
■ Implementation is appropriate given the high value and relative low cost
■ Potential technology obsolescence is low due to multiple bridging options

■ ZCP certification - ensures all parts of the stack other than the application profile are compliant with the ZigBee Standard
■ Allows network interoperability but does not imply interoperability at the application layer
■ There are currently 40+ ZigBee Compliant Platforms to choose from

■ Application profiles define what messages are sent over the air for a given application
■ Devices with the same application profiles interoperate
■ The ZigBee Alliance publishes a set of public profiles which guarantee interoperability

ZigBee Public Application Profiles
■ ZigBee HA [Home Automation] Public Profile has been ratified and will be published in Q4
►Companies are queued up for testing product
►The Alliance does not control when companies release products

■ “AMI” profile update
► “Alpha” AMI profile implemented with 4 t-stat vendors, 2 meter manufacturers, 1 energy mgmt SW provider
►Next scheduled milestone is for end of year
►Expect testing labs to be able to certify products by early 2008
Proposed AMI “clusters”
■ Price Cluster (Support for different energy providers, multiple rate labels, multiple currencies, multiple commodities, and both consumed and generated prices)
■ Simple Metering Cluster (Support for multiple commodities (gas, water, electric, etc.))
■ Demand Response and Load Control Cluster (Support for temperature

■ Demand Response and Load Control Cluster (Support for temperature adjustments, % load reduction, mandatory events, and multiple tiers)
■ Secure Communications Cluster (AES encryption provided by stack on a per-link basis as well as an overall network key)
■ Anonymous Price Broadcast Cluster (Support for anonymous pricing signal broadcast to any device)
■ Messaging Cluster (Support for predefined and custom messages)
