Zimbabwe From White Rule To Black Misrule Slide 2 Objectives Label Zimbabwe on a blank map of sub-Saharan Africa. Explain how inflation affects ordinary people. Describe how the country's leaders displayed racism both before and after the change in government. Compare and contrast Zimbabwes farms before and after the change in government. Compare and contrast standard of living for Blacks in Zimbabwe before and after the change in government. Slide 3 Confiscation is what the government calls it when it takes peoples things. Ethnic cleansing is the forced removal of one ethnic group from a land. Thanks for getting me elected! Terms and People Robert Mugabe is the president of Zimbabwe. Patronage System is using the wealth of the country to reward people for their political support. Inflation is an increase in the amount of money resulting in higher prices. Thanks for the cash! The citizens wont miss it at all! Slide 4 Zimbabwe is home to one of the worlds most beautiful waterfalls Victoria Falls. Zimbabwe has some wildlife tourism. Slide 5 Early in the 1900s, the country was called Rhodesia. Rhodesia, however, was a White-dominated country. Rhodesia was called the breadbasket of Africa. It was an agricultural nation and fed its people and exported food to its neighbors. Slide 6 Rhodesia did not have legal discrimination like South Africa or the US South. Blacks could freely compete for jobs. On the other hand, Blacks often had difficulty competing for the best jobs because they lacked education. On the other hand, Blacks in Rhodesia were able to find better jobs than they could in other African countries. Many Blacks even immigrated into Rhodesia. Whites continued to own most of the large farms and hold most of the government positions. Slide 7 A civil war was fought from 1965-1979. Blacks fought on both sides. Slide 8 They changed the name of the country from Rhodesia to Zimbabwe. Mugabe has been accused of numerous atrocities. Robert Mugabe came to power in 1987 and has been president ever since. Slide 9 Slide 10 When it was Rhodesia, they had some of the best agriculture in Africa. They not only fed themselves, but they exported food to other African countries. The land was given to Blacks. Many of them did not know how to farm. Now that it was Zimbabwe, farmers that were White were forced off their land, beaten, sometimes murdered. Slide 11 Slide 12 Slide 13 Slide 14 The financial situation for Blacks in Zimbawe is much worse now than it was before the change in government. Slide 15 Zimbabwe today is both the poorest and least healthiest country in the world. Slide 16 Zimbabwe has one of the highest mortality rates in the world for mothers giving birth. Zimbabwe has such troubles because Mugabe gave the farm land to inexperienced farmers and because he inflated the money supply. Slide 17 The result however, is that everything just costs more. Ill just print more money that will solve everything! Many people that dont know economics dont understand why the government doesnt just print more money and make everyone richer. 2010 2011 2012 2013 What happened to those prices? Slide 18 Slide 19 Robert Mugabe thought he could just borrow money from other nations and then print money to pay it back. Soon, his people began to feel the effects of this Inflation. Slide 20 Slide 21 Slide 22 Slide 23 When it was RhodesiaNow that its Zimbabwe Almost all government was run by Whites. All government is run by Blacks. Almost all Blacks were poorer than Whites; Whites owned most of the land. The government decides which Blacks can own land; few Whites remain. Rhodesia produced enough food to feed itself and to export to other nations in Africa. Zimbabwe cannot produce enough food to feed itself and must import food. No discrimination laws existed: educated or talented Blacks could succeed but only a few did. Discrimination laws exist: People have had their land and property stolen from them based only on the color of their skins. Blacks in Rhodesia were better off financially than most Blacks in Africa. Blacks in Zimbabwe are among the poorest in Africa. Slide 24 Which country is Zimbabwe? A B C D What was Zimbabwes previous name? Nicaragua Zaire Rhodesia South Africa A B C D What is inflation?
