Zombie Outbreak Part 2: The City

Zal looked across the city from his perch on a tree. He was trying to map out away through the city, but it was not going as well as he planned. Every street, every alley, every bridge was filled with the undead. Even now he could see thefilth shambling towards him, ever so slowly.

He jumped from the tree, landing lightly on his feet. He walked to a groupof tents, seeing people hurrying about. A woman walked in his direction, her hair

cut short. As Zal motioned, she moved to his side, walking swiftly. “The camp isready to be packed at your order,” she said in a hushed voice. Zal nodded, but hestopped walking. He turned to the woman, his face bare of emotion. “We will beginmoving then,” he told her. “We must be careful not to make any noise.” The womanagreed and started of, but she turned when Zal spoke once more. “Please make hasteVeronica, for the Zed’s will be here, with thousands behind them.” Veronica noddedran to the camp, signaling for the encampment to be packed.

Some minutes later, the camp was packed. Each member carried a full load. They had a long trip ahead and the sun was already setting behind them. By thetime they reached the outskirts of the city, the sun was behind the mountains, replaced by a waning moon.

The city they were crossing was in chaos. Cars crowded the streets, many ofwhich had zombies locked inside them. Several fires burned brightly, lighting the

immediate area in an eerie glow. Many lone zombies lurched through thedestruction, not noticing the band. Joel, the terrain inspector, surveyed thestreets with special binoculars. What he saw was very unusual.

A large group of zombies were flowing down the street, heading towards Joel. The unusual thing was that they were not moaning. Every other zombie that they hadfought moaned when they sensed humans. Joel turned and spoke to Zal about what hesaw. “We need to get moving then,” the band leader said calmly. He turned andpointed a finger to a vacant building. The group slowly walked to the building. When Zal reached the building, he turned to see what was behind them. The undeadhad reached the intersection they were just at. Zal closed the door thenimmediately started to give orders.

He told two of his best sharpshooters to find an advantage point. The manand woman nodded and sprinted upstairs to the windows. He told Nathan, Jordan, and

Crystal to set up barricades at the doors. The four others, including Joel, weretold to set up defensive positions on the first floor. He turned to Veronica andordered her to be ready to fall back. “Whatever happens,” he said to her.“Remember to destroy the stairs.” As soon as he said this, t he front door beganshaking. Nathan and the others barred the doors and sprinted back to Zal. Theyleveled their guns with the door and waited. Zal and Veronica pulled out theirmachete’s and guns, standing beside the others.

Two shots were fired from above, summoning a raspy moan from the fiendsoutside. More banging came from outside, knocking down several barricades. Thesound of glass breaking came from the side as several zombies crashed through thewindows. Zal cursed himself for not remembering to block the windows, but he hadmore to worry about as more of the undead flowed through the windows. Semi-automatic gunshots sounded through the deafening call of the undead. They fiends

fell by the tens, but still other poured in. Zal called for a retreat up thestairs. Slowly and steadily, the group made their way through the horde of undead. The stairs were dropped when Zal reached the second floor, crushing many zombiesbelow. Zal turned to see Nathan raving on about the zed’s. “Now they don’t moan,”he was saying. “What will they do next? Maybe they will start climbing.” Veronicapatted the small man on the shoulder. “If you keep thinking that way, theyprobably will.” Zal could only wonder what would happen if they could.
