NL Wanneer het ‘Australian and New Zealand Army Corps’ op 25 april 1915 landt op het Turkse schiereiland Gallipolli, begint voor hen de Eerste Wereldoorlog. ANZAC Day herdenkt jaarlijks de inzet van de Australische en Nieuw-Zeelandse soldaten tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog. Dit jaar zal ANZAC Day op heel wat wereldwijde aandacht mogen rekenen want op 25 april 2015 is het exact honderd jaar geleden dat de Eerste Wereldoorlog startte voor de ‘Anzacs’.

De belangrijkste herdenkingen vinden plaats in Gallipoli (Turkije), Zonnebeke (België), Villers-Bretonneux (Frankrijk) en in Australië en Nieuw-Zeeland zelf. Tijdens de periode rond ANZAC Day komen heel wat Australiërs en Nieuw-Zeelanders naar de Westhoek om de plek te bezoeken waar hun landgenoten 100 jaar geleden streden.

In Zonnebeke start de herdenking van ANZAC Day ’s morgens vroeg om zes uur met de traditionele Dawn Service op Buttes New British Cemetery in Polygon Wood (het Polygoonbos). Heel wat Australische en Nieuw-Zeelandse soldaten kregen hier hun laatste rustplaats.

Tijdens de ingetogen dienst komt de zon op, wat zorgt voor een unieke sfeer. De Dawn Service heeft een symbolische betekenis. Tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog werden de soldaten altijd gewekt in het donker, net voor ‘the dawn’ of de start van de dag. Net voor zonsopgang was immers het ideale moment om aan te vallen en daarom moesten de soldaten op hun hoede zijn. De Dawn Service wordt jaarlijks door heel wat mensen bijgewoond waaronder tal van prominenten. Na de Dawn Service wordt er een ontbijt aangeboden (inschrijven verplicht). Aansluitend is er een Australische plechtigheid op Tyne Cot Cemetery.

ANZAC Day wordt dit jaar afgesloten met twee GoneWest concerten (cultureel herdenkingsprogramma Provincie West- Vlaanderen) van The Veils (UK) en Daniel Lanois (CAN). Op zondagavond sluit Gurrumul (AUS) het weekend af. Al deze artiesten hebben Australische, Nieuw-Zeelandse en Canadese roots en maakten in opdracht van GoneWest nieuwe composities rond Wereldoorlog I en Anzac Day. Honderd jaar na datum brengen ze dit nieuw werk in première op het kasteeldomein van Zonnebeke.

EN Anzac Day is a very special day in both Australia and New Zealand. The anniversary of the Anzac Day is probably Australia's and New Zealand’s most important national occasion. It marks the anniversary of the landing of troops from Australia and New Zealand (ANZAC) on the Gallipoli Peninsula (Turkey) in the First World War on April 25, 1915. Anzac Day became the day on which we remember the sacrifice of the Australian and New Zealand soldiers who died in the First World War. This year, ANZAC Day will be commemorated worldwide because 2015 marks 100 years since the ANZAC landings at Gallipoli.

Besides in Australia and New Zealand, the main ANZAC ceremonies are running in Gallipoli (Turkey), Zonnebeke (Belgium) and Villers-Bretonneux (France). Every year, thousands of people attend these ANZAC ceremonies.

In Zonnebeke, the ANZAC Ceremony starts with a traditional Dawn Service at 6 a.m., commemorating the ANZAC soldiers. The Dawn Service observed on Anzac Day has its origins in a military routine. During battle, the half-light of dawn was one of the most favored times for an attack. Soldiers in defensive positions were woken in the dark before dawn, so by the time first light crept across the battlefield they were awake, alert, and manning their weapons. Every year, a lot of people, including a lot of prominent figures, attend the Anzac Day Dawn Service at Buttes New British Cemetery in Zonnebeke (Polygon Wood). After the service, breakfast is offered. A brief Australian ceremony at Tyne Cot Cemetery completes the morning program.

This year, three GoneWest concerts of The Veils (UK), Daniel Lanois (CAN) and Gurrumul (AUS) will end the centenary of ANZAC Day. GoneWest asked these musical protagonists from Australia, New Zealand, and Canada to draw their inspiration from WWI and Anzac Day and bring new work to premiere at Zonnebeke.
