We help the community launch its art into the world.

Our mission is to provide a healthy environment for all demographics to experience art together. Our slogan,

“Missoula’s Do-It-Yourself Art Center,” is lived out by making it possible for anyone to create art from start to finish. But we don’t stop there.

There are three main components of the ZACC

We are an educational arts organization – we offer art classes, run an after-school drop-in art program, and provide art facilities for groups or aspiring artists who want to use them. Our adult programs are continuing to grow throughout the year and our children’s program has filled a large need in the community.

We provide facilities and expertise for working artists – in that way we’re an economic development organization. We rent studio space at a low cost to working artists and provide them the tools and information they need to make a career in art. This includes the use of our gallery, SHOP, and renting

our community room for all types of events, including intimate concerts, presentations, and theater. All of these benefits aid the revitalization project for our community at minimal cost, thanks to our powerhouse networking and community building projects.

We are a community center for the residents living in the Northside neighborhood – an under-served area in the midst of revitalization. We are a haven and networking space for these residents, including the many kids coming to the center by sponsorship or scholarship.

Paint Your Own Pottery and Glass Fusing Studio Number Served: 50+ per month These studios exist to support the general operations of the center and allow diverse residents, from moms with babies to organizations and people with disabilities, to engage in an easy, authentic art experience. Classes in glass fusing offer teens and adults a chance to learn a unique skill. Our Paint Your Own Pottery studio has two classes a month. Both our ceramic and glass kilns are available to rent for a personal or group project.

“The greatest benefit of these programs and the Zootown Arts Community Center is a true sense of community, fostered by ownership of the space and art.”

Educational ProgrammingNumber Served: 215+ families since open Arts education programming lies at the center of the ZACC mission to provide art instruction, experiences, and opportunities to a wide variety of ages and incomes. Adult education programming consists of professional development workshops, resources, and networking opportunities to strengthen the careers of local artists – both amateur and professional alike. Creative teens receive support and education through our volunteer mentoring program. The ZACC is an outlet for teens to express themselves through art, learn and practice skills, and interact with professionals in the field. This year teens are working on a downtown mural. Our most successful educational programming serves children from the entire valley area regardless of income. The Young Artist Afterschool Program engages elementary and middle school children in community art projects such as murals and mosaics, and in individual projects. More concentrated art enrichment comes through the nine different week-long camps in the summer; each focuses on a different discipline or culture.

THE SHOP/Studios The shop is an outlet for budding artists to show and sell their work and understand their market. Artists rent six studios at the ZACC with 24-hour secure access, a business mailing address, and high speed wireless internet.

Gallery Number Served: 2300+ since opening Floundering, practicing, pushing the limits of artistic endeavors, and participating in local cultures lies at the heart of visual media. In fact, visual media is one of the strongest communication tools a community possesses. The ZACC gallery provides a venue to make art acces-sible to the community through encouraging participation and fostering authentic experiences through public and private exhibits of art, live music, and film screenings by emerging and aspiring local artists. From conception to installation, the ZACC supports exhibiting artists by helping realize their particular vision. The gallery is a community space where artists learn to hang a show, plan a reception, and promote their work. It is a frequently used space for classes, meetings, workshops, small music shows, art shows, and special functions.

Page 7: Zootown Arts Community Center

Print Lab/Copier Number Served: 65+ since June 2009 For the printing needs of nonprofit organizations, artists, zinestors, and individuals, we provide a cooperatively used copy machine with low rates to keep dollars local.

Wrongside Print Station The WPS operates as an open studio, housing printing equipment and supplies that can be rented on an hourly basis, and provides educational workshops in the printing arts. As Missoula’s only such resource, the WPS addresses the community need for affordable public access to traditional and non-traditional printing arts. Artists of all disciplines use it as an eco-nomical method of art reproduction that maintains artistic integrity. The WPS also offers affordable community access to printing arts to promote freedom of expression in the community by its own media.

It is this spirit of entrepreneurship, resourcefulness, and creativity which drives the ZACC to meet community needs through what we do best – art.

Workshops and Adult Classes Spanning a wide range of disciplines and skills, we have something for every adult. Interested in photography but don’t know where to begin? Maybe you’ve been shooting pictures for a while but want to start specializing. Been meaning to learn a new language but haven’t made time? Stuck in your own creative process? Check our website for a full list of our classes and work-shops. All are taught by talented local artists sharing their gifts and talents with Missoula. If you have an idea for one or want to teach it, contact us!

The SHOP When you first walk into ZACC, you’ll see our artists’ store — we like to simply call it the SHOP. There you’ll find creations by our studio holders and works on commission by local artists. Come buy handmade scarves, hats, handbags, cards, journals, and jewlery with an ever-expanding collection of prints, posters, and other locally-made items.

The SHOP, designed by Courtney Blazon and CarolLynn Lapotka, came to life through items from the Home Resource Center. Beat up old dressers, oven racks, TV Trays, heating vents, wire crates, and even washers and sprockets transformed the once office-like entryway.

Now gleaming with interesting trinkets and one-of-a-kind pieces, the SHOP is open Monday - Saturday from noon until 8:00 p.m. If you are interested in having your creations here, stop on by with a sample and fill out an application!

The ZACC has Missoula’s very own Paint Your Own Pot-tery Studio. Glaze pre-made pottery for your home, gifts, for others, or even create your own shapes out of wet clay which we buy from Archie Bray in Helena. Pottery painting makes for great parties. Molding wet clay and hand-building sculptures or functional pottery is good for the soul.

Drop in during our open hours, Monday through Saturday from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. and create something unique.

You’re more than welcome to come in and use the studio for your independent projects. Potters can come in and rent the kiln for $20 per firing.

of the weekly activities offered. At times, Young Adult Art Prep takes field trips to galleries, works on murals, and designs logos for businesses. This program is an arts related job-training program that provides teens with the opportunity to engage in constructive activities during the crucial after-school hours. Local art professionals help Missoula’s youth meet the challenges that await them by developing marketable art skills and building confidence by showcasing their talents. Youth participants engage with artists, teachers, and the ZACC in a positive environment. The ZACC promotes the artistic intellectual development of all children by:

1. Having fun as community members

2. Aligning and maximizing neighborhood physical and programmatic resources

3. Solidifying partnerships among citywide agencies and organizations

4. Mobilizing creative, coordinated and sustainable investment in children and teens.

Dear Friends and Business Owners,

Let us say it again: The Zootown Arts Community Center seeks to provide a healthy environment for all demographics to experience art together. Through its programming, it strives to beneficially impact the Missoula area’s development of arts education, community, and sustainable economy. How do we do this? Well, YOU do it - do it yourself art center, that is.

Scholarship FundUnfortunately, there are many individuals, particularly children, who want to come to the ZACC but cannot due to financial constraints. We’ve begun a scholarship fund to help them. We believe that money should not be a hindrance to experiencing genuine art from start to finish. Is this your passion, too? Help someone attend a class today by donating. To sponsor one child or adult for a month, it takes $48. Donate what you can to help our scholarship fund grow, and you will be giving an individual the gift of experience and creation—something you can’t get at a store.

Want to impact the center in a different way?Donate. You choose the amount, and can specify where you want it to go. Build our capacity by giving to general operating. Help develop the gal-lery. Get the staff off of food stamps. Whatever you choose, we can use.
