repertoire,havingchampioned thiscomposition since I firstperformed it.
ItbeganasapieceforcelloandpianoandwassowildlysuccessfulwhenI
playeditthatweaskedAlexinatoarrangeitforcelloandorchestra.Athird
versionwasmadeforthe40thanniversaryoftheNACwithchoreography
for two male dancers by Matjash Mrozewski. I have played all three
versions inoneformoranother inmanycitiesworldwide. Ithasmorphed
intoanexceptionallypoeticmusicalexpressionextremelypersonaltome.
AlthoughthepiecewasnotoriginallyaboutaTiger,IliketoimagineIama
Tigresswailingthroughthemusic.Orgrowling–Grrrrrrrr!Iloveit.Itisan
exceptionallychallengingtechnicalworkoutforthecellistwhichisextremely
satisfyingtoperform.
Dès ma première interprétation du « Tigre » d’Alexina Louie – comme je
meplaisàl’appeler–,jemesuisfaitechampionnedecettepiècequiasu
trouveruneplacedansmonrépertoirepermanent.L’œuvreoriginale,pour
violoncelleetpiano,aconnuuntelsuccèslorsquejel’aiinterprétéequenous
avons commandé à la compositrice une orchestration pour violoncelle et
orchestre. Une troisième version de la pièce, assortie d’une chorégraphie
deMatjashMrozewskipourdeuxinterprètesmasculins,aétécrééeparla
suite à l’occasion du 40e anniversaire du CNA. J’ai joué les trois versions,
sousuneformeouuneautre,àplusieursendroitsdanslemonde.Lapièce,
à laquelle j’attribueunevaleurtoutepersonnelle,estdevenueunvéhicule
d’expressionmusicaleexceptionnellementpoétique.Bienqu’iln’yait,enfait,
aucuneallusionàuntigredanslaversionoriginale, j’aimem’imaginerdans
lapeaud’unetigressedontlesrugissementsretentissentdanslamusique.

ThemusicofAlexinaLouiebearsapersonalstamp derived from a unique blend of herChinese background, an exotic instrumentalpalette, both traditional and non-traditionalelements of western music, poetic images,nature, historical studies and a fascinationwithheavenlyphenomena.
Born in Vancouver to Chinese parents,Louie undertook musical studies at theUniversity of British Columbia and theUniversity of California at San Diego,where she received her Masters of Arts inComposition in1974. For the remainderofthedecadesheresidedinsouthernCalifornia,teaching theory, piano and electroniccomposition, then returned to Canada toestablish residence in Toronto, where shehaslivedsince1980.InSeptemberof2005,Dr.LouiewasmadeanOfficeroftheOrderofCanada,andinthefallof2006,shewasinductedintoTheRoyalSocietyofCanada.
In March 2002, she was named oneof three recipients of the National ArtsCentre Composer Award ($75,000 each;Gary Kulesha and Denys Bouliane were

La musique d’Alexina Louie porte uneempreinte toute personnelle, mélangesingulier de sa culture chinoise, d’unepalette instrumentale exotique, d’élémentsde musique occidentale traditionnelle etnon traditionnelle, d’images poétiques,d’impressions de la nature, d’étudeshistoriques et d’une fascination pour lesphénomènescélestes.

The Orchestra played this work during their 2004 Western Tour, as well asin a concert in 2009 celebrating the 40th anniversary of the NAC (with commissioned choreography)and a separate concert celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Canadian Music Centre, always withMaestroZukermanonthepodiumandMs.Forsythonthecello.

The composer writes: “In the summerof 2003, the NAC Orchestra’s principalcellist, Amanda Forsyth, performedthe work brilliantly at the prestigiousSanta Fe Chamber Music Festival. Itwas this performance, and its effect onthe wildly enthusiastic audience, thatprompted Ms. Forsyth and Music DirectorPinchas Zukerman to request this specialorchestrationofthecomposition.ThetitleisderivedfromaTai-chi(Chinesemartialart)position....Aspecialaspectofthepieceisitssenza misura(withoutbar-lines)sections,whichallowthecellist tocontrol theshapeof the musical phrases by stretching themout or compressing them according to theperformer’sindividualinterpretation.”

Mozart,attheageofnineteen,spentmostof the year 1775 in the service of CountColloredo, Archbishop of Salzburg. Here,within the period of six months, he wrote

fourofhisfiveauthenticedviolinconcertos(No.1wascomposedprobablyin1773;twoadditional spurious ones exist). We are notcertainwhethertheywere initially intendedfor Mozart’s own use as a soloist or not,though he certainly performed them all atonetimeoranother.
In style, these works grow out of theItalian violin tradition as found in Tartini,Geminiani, Nardini and Boccherini. Themusicissteepedinthequalitiesofthestyle galant–grace,elegance,charmandgentlesentiments.Thethirdoftheset,completedonSeptember12,1775, justthreemonthsafter the second, represents an enormousadvanceoverthemererococoprettinessofthefirsttwoconcertos.
The Mozart biographer and scholarAlfredEinsteincommentsasfollows:“Whathad happened in the three months thatseparate the second concerto from thethird?Wedonotknow.Suddenlythereisanew depth and richness to Mozart’s wholelanguage....Suddenlythewholeorchestrabegins to speak, and to enter into a new,intimaterelationwiththesolopart.Nothingis more miraculous in Mozart’s work thantheappearanceofthisconcertoatthisstageinhisdevelopment.”
The first movement opens with theexpected orchestral ritornello exposing theprincipal themes. The movement is writtenin the classic sonata-allegro form. In fact,everything about the movement is classic–initsperfectlybalancedphrases,senseof
de six mois, quatre de ses cinq concertospour violon authentiques (le premier futvraisemblablement composé en 1773; il enexiste aussi deux autres, apocryphes). OnnesaitpassiMozartlesaécritsdanslebutde les interpréter lui-même comme soliste,mais ilestcertainqu’il lesa jouéstousàunmomentouàunautre.
Par leur style, ces œuvres s’inscriventdans la grande tradition du violon italien,dans la lignée de Tartini, Geminiani, NardinietBoccherini.Lamusiqueestimprégnéedetouteslesqualitésdu style galant—grâce,élégance, charme et douceur. Achevé le12 septembre 1775, tout juste trois moisaprèsledeuxième,letroisièmeconcertodelasérien’enconstituepasmoinsunpasdegéant par rapport aux joliesses purementrococodesdeuxpremiers.
Voici ce qu’en dit le biographe etmusicologue Alfred Einstein, grandspécialistedeMozart : «Ques’est-il passédanslestroismoisquiséparentledeuxièmeconcerto du troisième? Nous l’ignorons.Tout à coup, c’est tout le langage musicalde Mozart qui acquiert une profondeuret une richesse nouvelles. [...] Tout à coup,l’orchestre entier se met à s’exprimer avecéloquence, inaugurant un nouveau rapportintimeavec lapartie soliste.Rienn’estplusmiraculeux, dans l’œuvre de Mozart, quel’apparitiondececoncertoàcetteétapedesondéveloppement.»

L’Adagio a inspiré à d’innombrablescommentateurs les éloges les plus sentis.Pour Alfred Einstein, « on le croirait toutdroittombéduciel».EdwardDownessaluecette musique « d’une si ravissante beautéqu’onnepeut,en l’entendant,ques’inclineretrendregrâce».
Le mouvement final est un joyeuxrondo regorgeant de mélodies sourianteset insouciantes, à l’orchestration suave,où l’on peut entendre les échos de chantsfolkloriquesautrichiensetallemands.

Après l’austère majesté de la premièresymphonie, l’idyllique et pastoraleSymphonie no 2, avec sa profusion demélodiesfacilesàchanter,fitquandeffetsurlepublic.S’ilavaittravaillédurementpendant20 ans pour écrire sa première symphonie,Brahmscomposa ladeuxièmeen l’espacedetroismois–unanavantetaumêmeendroit(le lac de Wörth) que son concerto pourviolon. Symphony No. 2 in D major, Op. 73 After the massiveness and severity of theFirstSymphony,theidyllic,pastoralSecond,with its wealth of singable melodies, madea strong popular appeal. Whereas Brahmshad toiled for twenty years over his FirstSymphony, the Second was written inthe space of a mere three months – oneyear before and in the same place (theWörthersee) as the Violin Concerto. Thewarmly lyric and relaxed character, thegracefulness of the many melodies and apositiveoutlookareallattributable insomemeasuretothecharmsofthesouthAustriancountryside. In its pastoral quality, manylistenersfindaparallel toBeethoven’sSixthSymphony which, like Brahms’s Second,followed a grim, darkly serious and heroicsymphonyinCminor.

Brahms completed the symphony atLichtenthal near Baden-Baden in October.The first performance was given by theViennaPhilharmonic,ledbyHansRichter,onDecember30,1877.AlthoughtheVienneseliked it, the symphony rodea rockycoursetowards acceptance in other cities. OnesmilesinamusementtoreadthatinLeipzig,for example, where it was introduced in1880,acritic felt itwas “notdistinguishedby inventive power.” In Boston (1882), thePostcalledit“coldblooded”andtheTraveler proclaimed that the symphony lacked “asense of the beautiful,” while in New YorkthePost(1887)calledforareturnofAntonRubinstein’sDramaticSymphonytoreplaceBrahms’s “antiquated” music. So much fortheperspicacityofcritics!
Right from the very opening notes,the listener iscaughtup inthesymphony’sgentle,relaxedmood.Thefirsttwobarsalsoprovidethebasicmotivicgermsoftheentiremovementand formuchof thematerial inthe other movements as well. The three-notemottointhecellosandbasses,andthefollowing arpeggio in the horns, are heardrepeatedly in many guises – slowed down,speeded up, played upside down, buriedin the texture or prominently featured.All the principal themes of the movementare derived from these motto-motifs. Thesecond theme is one of Brahms’s mostglorious, sung by violas and cellos as onlytheseinstrumentscansing.
The secondmovement isofdarkerhueand more profound sentiment. The form isbasically an A-B-A structure, with a more

Dès les premières notes, on est plongédans leclimatdouxetapaisantde l’œuvre.Lesdeuxpremièresmesurescontiennentengermelesmotifsdumouvementtoutentieretdelaplupartdesmouvementsquisuivent.Le motif conducteur de trois notes jouépar les violoncelles et les basses, ainsi quel’arpège produit ensuite par les cors, sontrepris inlassablement sous de nombreusesformes–auralenti,enaccéléré,à l’envers,fondus dans la masse sonore ou misrésolument en évidence. agitatedcentralsection intheminormode.Throughout the movement, the listener’sattentioniscontinuallyfocusedasmuchonthe densely saturated textures as on thethemes.
The genial, relaxed character returnsin the third movement, not a scherzo asBeethoven would have written, but a sortof lyrical intermezzo, harking back to thegracious eighteenth-century minuet. Theforces are reduced to almost chamberorchestra levels, and woodwinds are oftenthe featured sonority. This movementprovedsopopularatitspremierethatithadtoberepeated.
The forthright and optimistic finalederivesheavilyfromthemelodiesofthefirstmovement, though, as usual with Brahms,thismaterialissocleverlydisguisedthatonescarcely notices. The coda calls for specialcomment.
