File Management
êNew File Types for One-object File
For the one-object Z3 file, specific objects have new extensions to distinguish each other as
following. The conversion between one-object file and multi-object file can be done by “Save
as” command, which is that a multi-object Z3 file containing only one object inside can be
converted into one-object file, while one-object file can be directly converted into the other.

êNew “Pack” to Archive a Z3 File and Its Related Files
A Z3 file may reference different objects from some external Z3 files like an assembly file
referencing other Z3 files as components, and has its own drawing sheet and cam plan saved
in separate files. When sharing this kind of file, it is hard to collect all its related files since
they can locate at different folders. Here comes this new “Pack” command which helps to
pack up all the associated files into one folder or zip file.
All available external files which relate to the active file will be shown up in the list when you
execute “Pack”. You can uncheck any one to unselect, or use the file type check box under
the list to un-list the undesired files. The referenced files are listed in “Link Manager” which
is referenced by the current file.
The packed files can be renamed with a prefix or a suffix to differentiate with the old ones.
And compression is also provided to zip the files directly to share it later.

êNew “Auto File Recovery” to Restore Unsaved Changes
ZW3D window can be shut down unexpectedly due
to different reasons like no power, OS system crash
or ZW3D crash. This shutdown can cause data loss if
there are any unsaved editing files. Besides the old
one to back up the session, now there is another new
way “Create auto-recover file every X minutes” to
automatically save the editing file for you and recover
it after a random crash.
The option is on Configuration > General > General, and
the files auto-saved by this option is put under your
ZW3D user folder > temp > recovery folder and will be
automatically opened on ZW3D next run to let you check
on or save. Just like the left legend shows, the “File
Recovery” form lists all the unsaved files with their last
modification time, source files and preview picture.
The un-opened files will remain on the disk unless you
open them or delete them manually, while the opened
files will be deleted after ZW3D’s normal closure.

Easier Definition of Standard Thread Hole Feature
The standard thread hole is much easier to define in Hole Feature now because of the new
setting of Thread Hole Table in CAD.
Display
Faster Display of CAM Tool Path
Comparing with 2014 SP release, the display of tool path in 2015 release will have 30-40%
speed up, especially in the cases with lots of ARC-type tool paths.
29
Accurate Filters of Cuts and Tool Path in CAM view
Now the filters, picks of cuts and tool path are much more accurate in CAM view owing to the
optimization of CAM display.
Generating Tool Path
Roughing
Complete Region Machining
In previous version, there are some missing or useless cuts when calculating tool path withthin stock thickness, big step, specified tool and tolerance, which are related with detectionof stock offset and cut boundary. Now region detection is improved, it is more stable andaccurate to get desired tool path in Roughing.
l Detect thin stock on boundary and create tool path of part side.
2014 SP 2015
30
l Complete machining with big step setting in some region which is failed to create tool
path
2014 SP 2015
Continuous Cuts in Sharp Corner and Narrow Region
There were tiny and broken cuts of Roughing in the corners before. In 2015 release the
accuracy and sequence of cutting points have been improved. Now the tiny cuts are removed
and the whole tool path is smoother, as shown as the following pictures. Besides, it does help
in Finishing tool path, to avoid breaking/incomplete tool path in narrow region.
2014 SP 2015
31
Rest Roughing
More Controllable of Rest Material
Now Min Rest Height has a new definition to detect rest materials by surface normal. In this
way, it is easier to control rest materials. The bigger Min Rest Height is, the less rest material
will be detected, so the tiny and thin ones could be removed. With the new definition, the
default of Min Rest Height is changed to 0.5 which is more reasonable.
Here are the results of Min Rest Height = 0.1, 0.5, 1 in ZW3D 2014 SP and 2015.
2014 SP 2015
32
Stable Region Detection
l Improve rest material detection near the boundary when referring operation in Rest
Roughing
2014 SP 2015
l Remove unneeded tool path of wrong region detection in Rest Roughing
2014 SP 2015
33
Offset 3D
Stable Cut Step and Smooth Tool Path
When setting small steps, the offset 3D tool path is coarse to use, especially on the vertical
wall. With the new algorithm, the cuts always keep the stable step to do 3D offset, which is
smoother and more stable.
2014 SP 2015
Better Corner
The cuts in corners are more accurate, especially in sharp corners and with small step size.
2014 SP 2015
34
Complete Machining
The new offset 3D algorithm gets accurate detection of cut region after offset and now it
could avoid some missing cuts in the center.
2014 SP 2015
Support Smaller Cut Step
Now you can set Minimum Scallop = 0.0005 in Offset 3D operation to get smooth offset 3d tool
path with higher calculation efficacy. Theoretically, with Minimum Scallop = 0.0005, you are
now supported to select Radius = 0.03 mm Ball/Bullnose tool.
Angle Limiting
More stable of Angle Detection
The angle detection is improved to get a desired region to create tool path with bigger Steep
Angle, which means to remove the “skated” tool path on the vertical wall.
2014 SP 2015
35
Completeness Machining between Two Regions
With specified Steep Angle, there will be some un-cut areas between flat region and steep
region. Now the region detection and machine have been improved more completely.
2014 SP 2015
Link and Lead in QM
Stable Structure of Tool Path
In 2015 release, each element of tool path is re-constructed. Now there are several basic
elements including Cut, Lead out, Rapid up, Link, Rapid down, Plunge, Lead in, as follows.
36
Links are classified by tool lift and there two types: with tool lift and no lift. So there are
two prototypes of tool path like these: ([…] marked as a whole part
Ø Cut – lead out – [ rapid up – link(tool lift) – rapid down ] – [ plunge – lead in ] - cut
Ø Cut – lead out(optional) – [ rapid up(optional) – link(no lift) – rapid down(optional) ] –[ plunge – lead in ](optional) - cut
As you can see, some of them are optional, which means that we can control them in
parameter forms. With different settings, we will get different links and leads of the two
prototypes.
New Link and Lead in/out Types
There are new links including Short Link, Long Link and Default Link. In 2015 release, Short
Link and Long Link are classified by an absolute distance, no more related with %Step. Default
Link could be used When Short Link or Long Link is failed to create.
Besides, “Add Lead to Short Link” is provided to control if add lead out before Short Link and
lead in after or not.
Here are the link types:
Prototypes Short Link Long Link Default Link

Clearance
Optimized
Clearance
Optimized
Clearance
Let us see what link types we get.
37
Link types Description Tool path
On Surface
The link will connect to the next pathswith a straight line. If there is any
convex feature between the paths, thestraight line will be projected on the
machining part as a 3D link.
StepThe link will traverse on XY plane and
step down the vertical descent to reachthe next cut point.
Spline The link will follow a spline which issmooth and keeps tangent to the cuts.
Optimized
The tool will lift to a specified planewith incremental distance to the
traversed surface of the part. The linkwill have a rapid-up before and a rapid-
down after.
ClearanceThe tool will lift to the safe clearance,so there will be a rapid-up before the
link and rapid-down after the link.
38
The types of Lead in and Lead out are completed in both Roughing and Finishing operation.
Two options are provided in case that the first one is failed. In each type, the settings are
simplified which makes them easier to understand and control in tool path editor.
Lead type Description Tool path
Arc_Line
Extend a tangent line and insert atangential arc move at the end of the
line. The lead in goes the arc first thenthe line, while the lead out goes the
line first then the arc.Parameters: Arc Type(Horizontal,Vertical, Normal), Arc Radius, Arc
Angle, Length
Ramp_Arc
The tool will do a ramp into thematerial at a specified angle, following
an arc with specified radius.Parameters:
Arc Radius, Ramp Angle, Ramp Height
Along_Toolpath
The tool will do a ramp into thematerial at a specified angle, following
the direction of the cut.If the cut is not close as a span, the
lead will follow the reverse direction ofthe cut.
Parameters:Ramp Angle, Ramp Height
None The lead in/out is created and emptywhen this type is selected.
39
New Definition and Look of Link and Lead
l Accurate judgment of Closed/Open region
We extend a tangent line with distance as Radius of tool to judge if it is a Closed cut orOpen cut, therefore we will get more reasonable links and leads.
l Better Ramp-down Short Link
The Spline short link is optimized so that spline can be created between two cut levels.
With new short link, there will be improvements in some cases with failed link before andin the cases of rest roughing.
2014 SP 2015
l Easy Extension of Lead in Finishing
Now you just set “Add Lead to Short Link” as “Yes” and select “Arc_Line” lead in/outtype, set “Arc Radius” as 0 and “Length” as specific distance, then extension comes out.
40
Safer and more Rational Principle
l Smart Ramp in Roughing
a) In Roughing, only Ramp_Arc type and Along_Toolpath type are acceptable, and therewill be not lead if selecting other types.
When you select Ramp_Arc type but it is failed, then it will degrade toAlong_Toolpath type which is a safe ramp and fits all cuts.
b) The location of ramp-arc is optimized, including keeping tangent arc to detect restmaterial for safety, to allow un-complete ramp-arc if there is no gouge, and so on.
Here is a case with closed pocket which is 20mm wide. The tool path is created withD10 Flat Tool and 2mm Step size, no thickness.
Setting Ramp Arc
50% Tool RadiusKeep the arc tangent to the first cut,
generate in safe position without gougeand collision as possible
70% Tool RadiusThe first cut of the arc will be used as the
center of the arc when it is too big totangent. Its point will be used After ramp
down, and a line straight to the cut will begenerated.
90% Tool RadiusIf the arc is bigger, it will find out any
possible positions for ramp arc and keepthe first cut point on the arc, so the ramp
arc will never be far away.
41
In the first cut level, the ramp arc needs to be kept tangent to the cut and checked ifthere is any gouge with the part because it may reach the top of the stock. If it issafe, the ramp arc will be generated.
l Safe Plunge and Air Access
Now a reasonable line will be extended to get outside of the stock when doing air
accessing, and all plunges will be detected to keep a safe distance with the tool and the
un-cut material, so that none of them have collision.
Simplified Feeds Assignment
The Speeds and Feeds types are simplified, and the speed/feed assigned to each element and
the default value is adjusted when each element of tool path is re-constructed.
Normally, Plunge feed is assigned to Plunge, Engage feed is to Lead in, Retract feed is to Lead
out, Traversal feed is to Link of tool lift. In Roughing, Plunge feed is assigned to the lead in of
Ramp_Arc type and Along_Toolpath type, which is slow enough to do ramp in.

Support Calculation Based on STL
Now stl file can be input to 5x Sidecut, but Guide Type is just supported “Cylinder”. Here is
an example of tool path on STL part.
Besides, a new parameter named “Y-Axis Deflection” is provided to define the origin of the
cylinder. There are three options including None, Centroid, Bounding Box. It can be found in
Axis Guide setting.
43
Centroid: use the centroid of the boundary as the origin.
Bounding Box: use the center of the bounding box as the origin.
New Zigzag Direction in Side Cut
Zigzag direction is added in 5X Side cut to avoid tool lift between cut levels.
You can find it in Cutting Control setting.
Here is the tool path of Zigzag.
44
Support to Trim Side Cut
