TS1140 Tape Drive Operation
Data is recorded in linear serpentine order down and back on the tape in groups of 32 channels at a time (called data wraps), with each channel recording at linear bit density of 500K Bits per Inch, a new world record for a magnetic tape device
– Allows low read and write tape speeds, improving media durability
A total of 80 data wraps are recorded across the width of the tape, for a total track count of 2560 total tracks recorded across the width of the tape for the new media types
– Drive requires only 80 ‘passes’ to write or read a full tape with 32-channel data format• Improves media and head life
– New media types feature an enhanced servo pattern to enable more precise track placement
Drive maintains the ability to record and read in the legacy 16 channel formats

has advanced head coating to prevent corrosion and to extend head and tape cartridge life

– Flangeless rollers: helps minimize tape edge damage and debris buildup by elimination of the roller flanges
