BRIEF HISTORY OF CASCAIS
The development of Cascais began in the 12th century and in its humble beginnings, the coastal village depended on fishing and maritime commerce, but already in 1364 it obtained the elevation of town status.
The town's medieval fortress was inadequate to invasions, and during the conflict with Spain in 1580, Spanish troops led by the Duque of Alba invaded Cascais.
Later the fortress was enlarged and changed into its characteristic, and still remaining, citadel star-shaped floorplan and it became part of the strategic defence line of the coast and reinforcing the protection of the maritime entrance to Lisbon.
When King Luís I in the 1870ies decided to make Cascais into his summer residence the quiet fishing village turned into a cosmopolitan address and the Portuguese royal family stayed in Cascais to enjoy the sea during the summers until 1908. Thanks to King Luís, the citadel was equipped with the country's first electric lights in 1878 and the first railway also arrived here in 1889.
Another important step in the development of the area was made in the first half of the 20th century with the building of a casino, hotels and a thermal SPA in neighbouring Estoril.
During the two world wars, especially in World War II, Estoril became the elected getaway destination for European aristocracy to the horrors of the war and several of the exiled royal families of Europe, including those of

Spain (House of Bourbon), Italy (House of Savoy), Hungary and Bulgaria came to live here.
Besides aristocrats and royalty’s, spies and writers also had a preference for the area, as was the case with for example Ian Fleming. It is supposed that he wrote the first part of Casino Royale, with its legendary figure James Bond here and thus projection of the image of the Cascais Estoril area to the four corners of the world.
