“Live Well”
From the Director ______________________________________________________________________________
ere we are a few weeks into the New Year and I am happy to say our programs and classes are all in full swing. Members are renewing their memberships for 2019 to initiate their choices to live a healthy life! A special thanks goes out to Washington Trust Bank for their generous donation of $1000 to benefit our
programs. We are grateful for their support and look forward to our extended community relationship with
them. We also want to congratulate them in opening their new location on Mineral Spring Avenue.
Welcome to North Providence!
February is American Heart Month. To raise awareness about heart disease and learn what we can do to
prevent it, look for our highlighted theme “Healthy Heart, Healthy You” in our February Newsletter. A
weekly series of “Heart” Health Presentations will be offered to our members to help us better understand
risk factors and symptoms. We will also learn what form of exercise and nutrition programs are
recommended to create a lasting change for all of us, one small step at a time. See details inside.
The Mancini Center has partnered with the North Providence Pool & Fitness Center in offering two center
classes at the Pool. Mancini Center Members may participate in Aqua Zumba held on Tuesday mornings
and Zumba Gold on Saturday mornings. Members are required to show their Mancini Center membership
card when signing in at the front desk of the Pool & Fitness Center. Both classes are sponsored by Golden
Crest. THANK YOU Golden Crest!
Our Valentine’s Day Dine & Dance Party is February 14th! Live Music and Dancing with the fabulous
Tom Conte! Catered by Mickey G’s. Tickets must be purchased in advance at our reception desk. Don’t
delay, deadline is February 8th. Look inside for more popular upcoming events in March. Tickets for these
events will go on sale in February.
Live Well… Along with eating right and being active, real health includes getting enough sleep,
practicing mindfulness, managing stress, keeping our mind and body fit and connecting socially.
All of the above is the perfect reason to stay active at the Mancini Center!
Warm regards.
Linda M. Giorgio, Director

What is new in 2019? Special Enrollment Periods
Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (MA OEP) Special Enrollment Period changes for people with Extra Help
Beginning in 2019, Medicare Advantage Plans have increased flexibility in their plan offerings. During the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (MA OEP), you can switch from your Medicare Advantage Plan to another Medicare Advantage Plan or to Original Medicare with or without a stand-alone prescription drug plan. The MA OEP occurs each year from January 1 through March 31. Remember, you can only use this enrollment period if you have a Medicare Advantage Plan. Changes made during this period are effective the first of the following month. If you have Extra Help in 2019, you have a Special Enrollment Period (SEP) to enroll in a Part D plan or switch between plans. This SEP is available once per calendar quarter for the first three quarters of the year (January-March, April-June, and July-September). If you use the Extra Help SEP to change your coverage, the change will become effective the first of the month following the month that you make the change. This is a change to the Extra Help SEP, which previously could be used once per month. If you have Extra Help, these new limits may mean that you are locked into a drug plan at certain times of the year.
Early issuance of February SNAP Benefits
Due to the continued Federal Government shutdown, the Rhode Island Department of Human Services will need to
issue SNAP benefits early in order to ensure that clients receive their February benefits.
Current SNAP recipients will receive their February benefits on January 20th, 2019. This includes individuals who are
renewing their SNAP benefits this month, whose renewal is completed by DHS by January 16th. Clients with January
renewals that are completed after January 16 will receive their February benefits on February 1st. Clients who have not
renewed yet for January should be sure to do so as soon as possible.
In addition, new applicants that are approved between January 16th-30th will receive both January (prorated) and
February benefits in January, when their case is approved.
Please note that households will not get benefits again until March 1, pending the availability of funds at that time.
You can download a DHS flyer about the changes in English, in Spanish and in Portuguese. If you have additional ques-
tions, call the SNAP Outreach Hotline at
1-866-306-0270.
