Saints had raced into an early 2-0 lead atClarence Park on Saturday but their EvoStikSouthern League Division One East visitorsfought back to salvage a 3-3 draw. Andthere would have been concerns when Citywent 2-0 again in the replay at Cambridge’stemporary home at St Ives Town onMonday.

But Saints managed the game far better, including during a 20-minute halt toproceedings when the floodlights failed. And that was the pleasing point for StAlbans’ manager Ian Allinson.

He said: “The mentality of the players wasa lot different to what it was on Saturday.

“We spoke at length then and before thereplay about what was expected from usbecause we fell short of our standards inthe first game after going 2-0 up. We couldhave quite easily been out of the FA Cup onSaturday because Cambridge hadchances.”

“But we had a second chance and I thoughtthe players were really professional andonce we went 2-0 up, I felt we bossed thegame. Charlie Walker was outstanding. Heled the line from the start and really set thetone for us to go out and put them underpressure.

“Attitude wins lots of matches and ourattitude on Saturday wasn’t good enough. We’re not the finished article, we knowthat. We’ve got a long way to go but we’vegot a squad that’s willing to listen andlearn, we’ve got a squad that works hardand we’ve got a squad who wants to dowell.”

“This keeps our season ticking over.”

But before that City have two tough leaguegames, starting with a visit to Whitehawkon Saturday, who brought Steve King backto the club as manager just last week.

Allinson said: “By all accounts and from thevideos we’ve seen, they’re actually playingwell, certainly at home. They’ll be arejuvenated side.”

However Danny Mills levelled in the 90thminute to ensure the two sides will do itall over again on Tuesday night atClarence Park. In truth it was probably afair result.

Junior Morias had the best chance earlyon for Saints, forcing a smart block byRoss Flitney and he also sent a headerinches wide from a Lee Chappell cross.Whitehawk’s best effort came after just60 seconds when Danny Mills pinched theball, chipped it to the back post but astretching Segio Torres couldn’t get anypower on it. Mills also headed wide underpressure from Josh Hill and the St Albanscentrehalf produced a great sliding block-tackle to stop the lanky Hawk striker fromscoring later in the half.

As the half drew to a close, City claimeda goal. A corner from the left was flicked onand forced Dan Harding to head clear off theline. The fact his header went up first, offthe bar and then out caused some toquestion whether it had crossed the line.In truth it would have been tough for thereferee to give it.

The start of the second half saw City atsixes and sevens and Whitehawk hadthree glorious chances before the clockhit the hour mark. Mills and Wilfred Tagbowere the guilty pair. Mills had time and spacein the box to force James Russell into a bravestop; then Mills missed a rebound afterRussell had got a hand to a Tagbo shot. The pair then contrived to allow Russellinto a third good stop as the City defenceappealed in vain for offside.

City did have one good chance in theopening spell, Marvin Hamilton making agreat clearance off the line to denyTheophanous. It looked as if City would avoidthe need for a replay with Theophanous’stunner but up popped Mills in the lastminute of normal time.

WHITEHAWK V ST ALBANS CITYThe Saints return to Vanarama National LeagueSouth action with a trip to the south coast to facebottom of the table side Whitehawk on Saturday. The Saints secured their place in the thirdqualifying round of the Emirates FA Cup withvictory in a replay against Cambridge City onMonday night and will be looking to continue thatform against Whitehawk.

Saturday’s opponents have had a very difficultstart to the 2017/2018 campaign losing nine anddrawing two of their opening eleven fixtures. TheHawks remain without a victory and have actedquickly in the past week by re-appointing formermanager Steve King (right).

Whitehawk have had a turbulent few monthsboth on and off the pitch. Andy Woodman, whohad kept the club up at the end of last season, departed and was replaced by Jimmy Dack. Dacksubsequently left seven games into this seasonand the Hawks had been under the temporaryleadership of Dan Harding prior to King’s returnlast week.

King’s second spell in charge of the club kicked-off with defeat in the FA Cup to fellow NationalLeague South side Oxford City last Saturday.

The Hawks took the lead in the 28th minute butOxford levelled things up three minutes later andwent on to score either side of half-time tosecure the result on the south-coast.

Despite that defeat, King has been busy making anumber of new signings including defender KaneLewis, forward Enoch Andoh and former SaintDavid Ijaha. The manager has also spoken of hisdesire to bring more new faces in and it’s likelythat several will arrive ahead of Saturday’s clash.

If fans are segregated inside the stadium, thenpart the North End of the ground is allocated tovisiting supporters. This temporary all seatedstand is situated behind the goal and extends overto the East side of the stadium and has a capacityof 800 seats. It is set back from the playing areaand has no roof so hope that it doesn't rain. It iscalled the 'Sea End' by fans as you can actuallysee the sea from this area.

However its elevated position means that thewind can be quite bracing at times, so wrap upwell. Whitehawk is normally a welcoming club tovisitors.

There is a small club house at the ground whichadmits away fans. Around a 15 minute walk awayis the New Bush pub on Arundel Road. Also onthe sea front is the Brighton Marina, where thereare a number of bars and restaurants. There isalso a traditional pub at the Marina, that servesreal and is called the Master Mariner. The Marinaalso has a large free car park.

To find the Marina and the New Bush pub, thenfrom the entrance to the ground, turn left downWilson Avenue, and continue all the way down tothe sea front. Turn left for the Marina (which iswell signposted) or turn right for the New Bushand then take the second right into Arundel Road.

As the traffic into the centre Brighton on the A23can be quite slow at times, the the route outlinedbelow avoids this.

At the end of the M23, continue onto the A23,heading towards Brighton. At the roundaboutwhich is the junction with the A27, take the A27towards Lewes. After around four miles you willsee the stadium on your right hand side. Leave atthe A27 and take the slip road sign posted

On reach a set oftraffic lights which is the Woodingdean Junction, turn right by the Downs Hotel, towards the CityCentre/Racecourse.

At the next traffic lights turn left into WilsonAvenue (signposted East Brighton Park). Afterpassing the entrance to the Stanley LeisureCentre, continue further down the hill and thentake a left into a narrow road (signposted EastBrighton Park/Camping). Follow the narrow roadround, passing an entrance to a caravan park andthe ground entrance, is around to the right. Thereis a car park at the ground that holds 100 cars andthe entrance road up to the ground is quitenarrow. So it may be an idea to find one streetparking on the residential streets off WilsonAvenue and walk over to the ground.

BY TRAINBrighton Central Railway Station is situatedaround two and half miles away from the ground.Either get a taxi or bus up to the ground.

To take a bus; then from the Stance B stop at therailway station, take the Brighton and Hove BusCompany No 7 (towards Brighton Marina) or 27(towards Saltdean) to Roedean Road (ask thedriver to drop you off on this road near theMarina). After being dropped off, walk upRoedean Road to the traffic lights (keeping thegas pylon on your right) and turn left into WilsonAvenue. Then take the next right into a narrowroad (signposted East Brighton Park/Camping).

Follow the narrow road round, passing anentrance to a caravan park and the groundentrance, is around to the right. Please take carealong this road as it has no footpath and at nightit is unlit. A Bus Timetable can be downloadedfrom the Brighton & Hove Bus website.
