Ryan Doolittle Named First “California League Pitcher of the Week” in 2011Ports reliever Ryan Doolittle has been red hot thus far this season and Minor League Baseball is taking notice, naming him the first California League Pitcher of the Week for the 2011 season.
Doolittle has made two appearances for the Ports, each time pitching 5.0 score-less innings to record the win for the Ports. Doolittle made his first appearance of the season in Modesto on April 10th, filling in for scheduled starter Gary Daley Jr. Doolittle allowed just two hits in the contest and recorded four strikeouts as the Ports squeezed out a 2-1 win over the Nuts.
Doolittle kept the Nuts scoreless again when he took the mound at home on April 15. Doolittle entered the game in the top of the sixth with the game tied 1-1. Doolittle had Modesto’s number, striking out seven of the 18 batters faced, and allowed just three hits in the extra inning contest. Doolittle has yet to give up a run in 2011.
“Ryan had a great week and pitched two excellent ball games,” Ports pitching coach Craig Lefferts said of the honor. “He really showed good command. He was placing the ball well and had good movement. So congratulations to Ryan Doolittle.”
Doolittle is not unfamiliar with the honor of being named Pitcher of the Week, hav-ing earned the title last season while with Short Season affiliate, the Vancouver Ca-nadians. Doolittle was originally drafted by the Oakland Athletics in the 26th round of the 2008 First-Year Player Draft. The New Jersey native split time in 2010 with the Vancouver Canadians (Short Season A) and the Kane County Cougars (Low A), earning the distinction of Northwest
League Pitcher of the week for the week of July 6, 2010. In Vancouver, Doolittle posted a 2-0 record and a 0.00 ERA.
Stockton Ports fans can check out the California League’s 2011 inaugural Pitcher of the Week all season long as he pitches in to help bring the Ports a victory from the bullpen at Banner Island Ballpark.

Ask anyone about Max Stassi – his teammates, his coaches, anyone who has worked with him. They will all give you the same distinct impression of the ideal teammate: a talented athlete, a leader, and a comrade; he has plenty to bring to the Stockton Ports ball club this season.
Hitting 20 years old this past March, Stassi is the youngest player on the Ports’ 2011 roster, but he is anything but green. His road to being selected by the A’s in the fourth round of the 2009 amateur entry draft (and being named their sixth top prospect and top defensive catching prospect by Baseball America) began very early in his life. One might go so far as to say that it began before his birth.
The Yuba City, CA native comes from a family of baseball players, and has been immersed in the sport from day one. His father Jim Stassi became a coach at Yuba City High School, after playing pro-ball himself. Jim’s father also played, and his uncle was Myril Hoag, who played outfield for the New York Yankees in the 1930s. And that’s just a snapshot of the Stassi family baseball tradition.
A well-chosen Christmas gift proved that many generations in the sport bred sharp intuition, and helped to establish Max’s
position of choice.
“I’ve always been a catcher,” he said. “Santa Clause brought me catcher’s gear when I was about six or seven.”
His family ties also gave him a head-start in high school ball. When he was still in junior high, he played with Yuba City High School, where his father coached, during the summer and fall leagues. By the time he was a freshman, he was already comfortable with the team, and ready to really start making his mark. He did so by breaking the school record for hits with 51, and establishing records with a .580 batting average, 9 home runs, and 44 RBI.
It’s no wonder Stassi was drafted right out of high school. With a senior batting average of .538, a fielding percentage of .989, and the 15th spot in Baseball America’s top-100 high school prospects list, he would have plenty of options for post-high school play. One of those options was UCLA.
Stassi signed his intent to play for UCLA in 2008, but the Oakland Athletics organization would be the one to win him over a year later. From 2009 to 2010, he played his way through the AZL A’s, Vancouver, and Kane County before returning to Stockton to play close-to-home for the Ports. A team player through and through, he takes pride in the ball club’s strengths this season.
“[I’m] really excited [about this season],” he said. “We’ve got power and speed, and quality pitching.”
He doesn’t hesitate to cite outfielder Michael Choice and third baseman Leonardo Gil as two of this year’s top competitors. Stassi has established a good rapport with all of his teammates and coaches, and seems to get along well with everyone in general.“I like to see everyone succeed. I take pride in being a good teammate,” he said.
This sense of camaraderie extends to

Stassi’s work behind the plate. As a catcher, he has a responsibility specifical-ly to the pitchers who are throwing to him. A strong pitcher-catcher dynamic is vital to every game, and his ease in maintain-ing that dynamic is what makes him such a solid defensive player.
“He’s very talented, and advanced for his age,” said Stockton Ports pitching coach Craig Lefferts. “[Catchers] have to know their pitchers. Pitchers love throwing to him. He has a really good receiving style.”
And when a pitcher has someone as knowledgeable as Stassi to throw to, it makes their job easier.
“He calls a really good game. He knows what to throw and when to throw it. It’s nice to have a catcher with confidence,” said former teammate, and A’s affiliate minor leaguer, Justin Murray.
Ports fans can expect to see power from Stassi at the plate as well as behind it. With his impressive hitting stats from high school and what coaches have observed so far, it’s hard not to expect offensive strength.
It’s a combination of his skills as both a defensive and offensive player, his driven personality confidence, and understanding of the game that lead Stockton Ports hitting coach Brian McArn to refer to Stassi as a “student of the game.”
“He’s a professional hitter, and he’s got a professional plan,” he said. “He has a great work ethic, and that’s going to take him up to the big leagues.”
Having his family – his original support system and inspiration – so nearby as he plays with the Ports will keep him driven on the path to the majors, especially since they will most likely be in attendance at many of his games. Along with his father and the rest of his family, Stassi named Silver Slugger and Golden Glove winning Red Sox second
baseman Dustin Pedroia as one of his major athletic influences.
“[Pedroia] plays extremely hard,” he explained. “He’s what you aspire to be as a baseball player.”
Stassi’s commitment to the game could very soon elevate him to being the type of player other athletes aspire to be, if he isn’t already. But despite his notable resume and quick climb to the A’s single A affiliate, he remains remarkably down-to-earth, which is an extremely important character quality to maintain as a young athlete.
With the season well underway, Stassi says he feels right at home with the Ports, and is having fun being able to do his job by playing the game he loves in Stockton. He recognizes the support of the Stockton Ports fanbase, and fans should not hesitate to say hello to him and see for themselves what a genuine person he is – just as long as it’s not when he’s focused on preparing for a game.
“I’d definitely like to get to know the fans after games,” he said. “I’d like to know who’s out there.”
Look out for Stassi, #10, behind and at the plate this season as he lets his talent and strength shine through with the Stockton Ports.

me, and they don’t have to travel across the country or any of that,” he said. “I’ve got a bunch of fans, family coming out, so it’s going to be a lot of fun.”
He also appreciates the specific advantages of getting to play home games at Banner Island Ballpark.
“It’s a beautiful park. I like that it’s a short porch in right, hopefully I can increase my numbers over there,” he said.
Born and raised in Grass Valley, CA, right-handed pitcher Gary Daley, Jr. (below) is also returning to his roots after playing with St. Louis affiliate teams from 2006-2010. It’s exciting for his family, most of whom live in Grass Valley, to have him playing so close by.
“My parents were really excited to come and watch me play be-cause I’ve been out on the east coast for most of my career,” he said. “So for them to be able to come out and see me consistent-ly and make all my starts, my dad was really excited about it, my 12

The road to the major leagues is an exciting, if sometimes unpre-dictable journey. Minor League baseball can take players far from home, to the opposite coast, to the Midwest, and even up to Vancou-ver. They just have to go where the system takes them, and while the experience is great for an athlete, in the end, there’s no place like home. For three Stockton Ports players and one coach, being a part of the Stockton Ports ball club this season means returning relatively close to home and regaining a little familiarity as they continue their baseball careers.
Hailing from Pittsburg, CA, first basemen Anthony Aliotti (below) is one of the handful of Ports to come originally from the area. He went to De La Salle High School in Con-cord before attending Saint Mary’s College of California. With all of his family in the Pittsburg area, Aliotti looks forward to a fanbase in the stands.
“[Playing in Stockton] is awesome. My family was hoping I’d be here so they could come out and see
and getting those home cooked meals just makes the whole experience a lot easier,” he said.
The Ports also have a coach from the area. Hitting coach Brian McArn (below) lives in Elk Grove, CA and feels very fortunate to be working for the Stockton-based team.
“Every night I’m sleeping in my own bed, and I get to see the kids every morning, and works not too far away. It just makes it a lot easier,” he said. “I’m blessed to be working so close to home.”
McArn believes that familiarity makes quite a difference in this profession and enjoys getting back to where he himself played baseball.
“It’s comfortable. I grew up, I played baseball in the Sacramento area, and you’re comfortable when things arefamiliar to you,” he said. “I love being in Northern California, we’ve got great weather, great people, and the family’s close.”
It’s home, sweet home for these Stockton Ports, and the organization is proud to have some of its talent come from the local area.
mom was really excited about it.”
Aside from family support, Daley also enjoys the general change of scenery.
“I’ve been around Stockton and Sacramento, this whole Northern California area, so I’m excited to be in Northern California,” he said. “I like it up here, the air is cleaner. It’s just a nice area and it’ll be nice to get home once in a while.”
Another player looking forward to being back home is catcher and Yuba City, CA native Max Stassi. (below) Stassi attended Yuba City High School, where he played baseball under his father’scoaching.
“[Yuba City]’s got a small town atmosphere to it,” he said. “We had a lot of fans coming out, and we were actually fortunate enough to have lights at our field. We’d get about a thousand people out there, and for a high school game, that’s an unbelievable crowd. We had a lot of community support and I’m proud to be from Yuba City.”
Like Aliotti and Daley, Stassi looks forward to getting family support from the stands, and having the added comfort of being a short distance from home.
