NORM/LSARadioactive substances occur at most
oshore locations. Natural Occurring
Radioactive Material (NORM) or Low
Specic Activity (LSA) are the collective
names or these naturally occurring
radioactive substances which may be
released during the production o oil and
natural gas. Traces o these substances
have been present in the ormations rom
which oil and natural gas are extracted
ever since the earth was ormed. During
the production process they can be
brought along to the surace, either as
gas or as salts (dissolved in water or
in a solid state). It is thereore possible
to nd gaseous radioactivity in the
orm o radon gas in the production
environment. The radioactive substances
can accumulate (in sludge) in some
installation components or orm
accretions (scale) inside pipes, tanks and
vessels.
What are the characteristicsof NORM/LSA? Invisible and odourless.
Measurable using special equipment.
Health hazard.
Environmental hazard.
Where, when and how canyou come into contact withNORM/LSA? When a closed system or installation
leaks liquids and/or gases.
When a closed system or installation
is opened.
Gsus: radon
liquid fm: (watery) sludges
Sid fm: scale

Radiation risksThe radiation dose you are likely to
receive due to NORM/LSA is low and
not harmful. However, radiation caused
by NORM/LSA can pose a health risk in
cases o:
Regular and long-term exposure to
relatively small doses o radiation.
Direct internal contact with
NORM/LSA.
Preparations for the jobBeore you start work, the Radiation
Expert will explain the risks involved.
During the job itsel, he will take
contamination measurements at the
workplace.
Make sure that you know and
understand all the risks o the job.
Take all the prescribed precautionary
measures.
Use the proper PPEs, and make sure
they are in good condition.
The Radiation Exper t Decides what precautions regarding
radiation hygiene must be taken during
the job.
Is present at the workplace
Takes contamination measurements.
Sees to it that the radiation hygiene
measures are observed during the job.
Provides advice on how to
prevent radiation leaks, spills and
contamination.

While the job is underway Prevent sludge spills. Use spill basins.
Prevent the dispersal of radioactive
dust particles; no dry grinding or
brushing.
Make sure that, wherever possible, the
suraces to be treated are kept wet.
Store and dispose o NORM/LSA-
contaminated components in
accordance with the applicable
instructions.
What personal protective
equipment? Basic PPEs
Non-porous gloves
Disposable overalls and rubber safety
boots
If dust is produced: full-face masks
with independent breathing protection
During welding (evaporation product):
pressurised welding mask with
breathing air supply
The required PPEs are specied in your
work permit.

Personal hygiene Wash your hands before eating,
drinking, smoking or using the toilet.
Beware of contamination of your PPEs
and avoid any spreading o NORM/LSA
when removing, undoing or disposing
of your PPEs.
The Radiation Expert checks the PPEs
or NORM/LSA contamination.
Contamination withNORM/LSAExternal: on the skin through contact
with sludges (rom bottoms o tanks
and vessels) and scale (on the insides
o piping).
Internal: as a result o inhaling dust
between fanges, dust particles released
during maintenance work or as a result o
evaporation during welding.
Internal: as a result o swallowing
splashes o sludge or due to eating ood
contaminated by hands.

What to do in case ofcontact, inhalation orswallowing?
Always warn the Radiation Expert
immediately.
external contact
Wash the contaminated areas
thoroughly. In most cases, no
contamination will be measured ater this
has been done.
Internal contact
Some substances are excreted by
the body; others are not. Any orm
o inhalation or swallowing must be
avoided. I it nevertheless happens,
ollow the relevant work instructions
and immediately notiy the Responsible
Radiation Expert (RRE).
Want to know more aboutNORM/LSA?Within GDF SUEZ more inormation on
NORM/LSA and related topics can be
ound in the Operations Manual,
Chapter 1, or contact the HSEQ
department or the RRE.
I this brochure does not provide the
answers to your questions or possibly
raises new questions, contact your
supervisor or the contact person
assigned to you. The topics in question
are described in more detail in the HSEQ
ring binder available on each manned
platorm and at all onshore locations.
The GDF SUEZ Standing Instructions
and/or the GDF SUEZ Operations
Manual provide the most detailed text
and explanation concerning this topic
and can be examined at each oshore
location. They are also available in the
