The mission of the Irish Music and Dance Association is to support, coordinate, encourage and promote high quality activities and programs
in Irish music, dance, and other cultural traditions within the community and to insure the continuation of those traditions.
Congratulations to the Young
Musicians from the
Center for Irish Music
Eight students from the Center for Irish Music recently competed in this year’s Midwest Fleadh Cheoil in Chicago. The Fleadh is an Irish music competition that includes both solo and group competitions. The five members of the CIM Advanced Ensemble pictured above competed in two categories and took second place in both! Fiddle students Joey DeGeorgeo, Karen Kenison, and David Ochs also competed in solo events. Congratulations to these fine young musicians and to CIM instructors Brian Miller (ensemble instructor) and Jode Dowling (former ensemble instructor). For a more complete description of the Fleadh, please see Brian Miller’s article in the April CIM newsletter (available at www.CenterforIrishMusic.org/newsletter/).

To whet your appetite for next month’s Minnesota Irish Music Weekend, this column features a tune recorded by Harry Bradley, one of the artists who will be teaching and performing during the weekend. Harry is an amazing flute player from Belfast who found his inspiration in the driving, pulsing style of flute players from the 1920s, such as John McKenna and Tom Morrison. Until the MIM Weekend publicity came out, I had no idea that Harry was also an accomplished uilleann piper. This tune appears on Harry’s duo CD with fiddler Paul O’Shaughnessy. Some of the tunes I transcribe turn out to be not as complicated as I had at first thought. Others, like this one, turn out to be more complicated. I had been listening to this track for years without noticing the meter alternates between two and three. Then it dawned on me that this march is a version of the air known as The Coolin. (Writing something down is a great way to focus one’s attention!) According to the liner notes, “This march setting of the famous Gaelic song is…from Paul’s studies of John Doherty’s music.” John Doherty (1900-1980) was, of course, a very influential fiddler from Donegal. Check out the Center for Irish Music’s website at www.centerforirishmusic.org to learn more about the Minnesota Irish Music Weekend. Whatever you do, don’t miss it! Usual disclaimers: Any transcription errors are my own. The notation here is not meant to be a substitute for listening. It is simply an aid to learning the tune.

The Irish word pobal can be translated as "people," in the sense of "the people" that we hear politicians refer to so often. But it also is used to express "a community," in the sense of a collection of people who
have something in common.
Thus the common phrase, in Irish-language media, pobal na
Gaeilge, "the Irish-speaking community." This refers to a common interest in the language, and can include speakers (and supporters) all across Ireland, and even beyond. It is a community defined by the common interest, not by a geographic location where Irish is spoken. Of course, a geographic community is also possible, as in pobal na
Gaeltachta, "the people of the Gaeltacht." And one community that does gather in one place is the one that assembles in theteach an phobail, literally, "the house of the people." This phrase is a common Irish term for a "church," the community being the members of the
parish or congregation.
The common connection could be something as simple as a song. A song that is "popular" is said to be i mbéal
an phobail, literally, "in the mouth of the people." You'll also see this "popular" usage in the names of movements and organizations, things like "The Popular
Front For ...", Fronta Pobail ....
In one form or another, pobal figures in countless official government names and titles. You might see references to Seirbhísí Pobail ("community services"), Gnóthaí Pobail("community affairs"), Forbairt Pobail
("community development"), and Ionad Pobail
("community center"). You'll also see the form poiblíor "public" in titles such as an Rannóg Sláinte Poiblí, "the
Department of Public Health."
And fear an phobail or bean an phobail, a "man or woman of the people," is actually someone who responds to complaints from the public, that is, an
ombudsperson.
Pobal is not the only word used in Irish to "collect" people with something in common. The Irish word lucht is used to refer to the people associated with a common interest or event, and in this usage, it rarely
stands alone, the way pobal can stand for "people" on its own. Instead, lucht is usually followed by something that
indicates the connection.
Thus Páirtí an Lucht Oibre, the "party of people associated with work," is the Irish name of the Labour
Party in Ireland. The connection could be a location, as when lucht na
mbruachbhailte, the "people of the city's edge," refers to "suburbanites." If you wanted to express the concept of "groupies" around a celebrity or a
movement, you could uselucht.
It is particularly common to refer to audiences, but depending on how the audience is experiencing an event, the description changes. Lucht féachana are the "watching people," that is, the audience of a visual event like theatre or a film. Lucht éisteachta, the "listening
people," would be used to refer to, say, a radio audience.
And you are part of the nicely alliterative lucht
léitheoireachta, the "reading people," who form the
audience for this newsletter.
It's not too early to circle the weekend of August 4 & 5 as a great time to learn some Irish, or to polish what you know. We'll hold our second annual Bernie Morgan Memorial Irish Language Workshopfrom Saturday morning through Sunday afternoon on the campus of St. John's University in Collegeville, MN. event.

The Center for Irish Music presents a Minnesota Irish Music Weekend
June 15-17, 2012
The Minnesota Irish Music Weekend is a unique festival presented by the Center for Irish Music that pairs world-class traditional Irish musicians and teachers with youth and adult learners for a weekend of workshops, lectures and a rare and virtuosic concert on Saturday night. Guest musicians this year include Harry Bradley (Belfast) on flute and pipes, Felix Dolan (New York) on piano, Jesse Smith (Baltimore) on fiddle, Devin Shepherd (Chicago) on fiddle, and Eileen Gannon (St. Louis) on Irish harp. (There are rumours about other amazing musicians
coming just for the craic, but so far the above friends are the ones
we are officially counting on...)
This three-day event is unique in its mission to provide traditional Irish music programming for all ages and abilities, from a beginner program for children ages 7-11 taught by Center for Irish Music instructors, to a full three-day youth music course (all Irish instruments) and a wide variety of 80-minute workshops for adults on uillean pipes, flute, piano, Irish accompaniment, Irish harp, fiddle and more, taught by the visiting artists. The weekend will also feature some interesting events for Irish music aficionados, such as a lecture on the music of the famous Sligo fiddler Michael Coleman, who emigrated to New York in 1914, eventually making over 80
of the most influential recordings of Irish traditional music of the century.
You won't want to miss a fascinating interview by local musician and scholar, Dáithí Sproule, of New York pianist, Felix Dolan on the history of the Irish music scene in New York. Felix Dolan recorded a tribute album to Michael Coleman with Andy McGann and Joe Cooley and will have many interesting stories to tell about famous Irish American musicians from that area.
Mark the following events on your calendar now!
♣ Friday, June 15th, 7:00pm - Family Ceili, live music from Twin Cities Ceili Band
♣ Saturday June 16th, 8:00pm - Concert featuring visiting artists
♣ Outdoor Happy Hours at the Celtic Junction on Friday and Saturday, 5:00-7:00pm (all proceeds go to the
Center for Irish Music)
♣ Workshops by world-class visiting artists for adults Sat & Sun.

♣ Fáilte romhat, a Alice Katherine (Welcome Alice Katherine), the newest member of the Katie and Jason Spangler family. When we reached out to Will Kenny of Gaeltacht Minnesota for an appropriate Irish greeting for Ali and her family, Will commented that “traditionally, when the Irish came over to see your new baby, they insulted it. They would peer down on the little bugger and say, ‘She looks a little cross-eyed,’ or, ‘Boy, her nose is kind of crooked.’ The reason for this was that if the fairies heard anyone praising the baby as being beautiful, etc., they would snatch the baby and leave a changeling in its place.” So we certainly won’t say a word about how beautiful she is!
♣ Comhghairdeas le (Congratulations to) Ashley Overton and David Schilmoeller, who have been
selected for the Friends of St. Patrick’s Young Ambassadors Program. The program will take Ashley and David to Northern Ireland this summer for two weeks of study, community work and fellowship.
