News from Headquarters by Keith Savoie
The All Star tournament was
held in Georgetown at the 40
lane center, Mel’s Lone Star
Lanes, one of the most unique
bowling centers we have been
to in a while. Driving into the
parking lot greets you with
CJ’s Sports Bar, a great place
for food and drinks, with sever-
al flat screen TV’s to enjoy any
variety of programs. Drive
around the corner, and you will
find the entrance to Mel’s Lone Star Lanes. Once you
enter the center, there is a fully equipped arcade for all
ages. I can attest to this, at the end of the tournament,
my staff got into a shooting war in the Astro Blaster
room. Past the arcade is 28 lanes for bowling. I was a
little confused by this also, I did say 40 lanes at the
beginning of this article. On the high end of the center,
are 12 more lanes on the other side of the wall in CJ’s
Sports Bar with plush sofas instead of the hard chairs
we are used to, with a bar in arms reach.
The tournament started a little slow as we had only 38
pre entries for the first squad. This number is normally
around 100 entries, where walk ins find no lanes availa-
ble. Instead we had a welcome 50 walk ins, which de-
layed the first squad from starting on time, but once
the bowlers were on the lanes, we made up the time
with the smooth operation of the lanes and staff.
We were on pace to have a reasonably good turn out for
the tournament considering the economy today. As
squads went on the attendance went down. By the last
squad on Saturday we had only 276 total entries, of
which 81 were reentries for the second squad paid by
TCBA. All total 135 TCBA bowlers attended the tour-
nament. To the bowlers that attended the tournament,
I thank you. During the tournament I asked several
bowlers “What can we do to make the All Star tourna-
ment better. Most said bowlers were not here because
there was not enough money in the prize fund.
All Star tournament needs your help
I told them that the prize fund is based on entries. If TCBA
bowlers support the tournament by attending, the prize fund
would be larger. For the first time since I have been affiliated
with the TCBA All Star, we had to reduce the number of bow-
lers being paid to below the number normally in the semi-
finals. Division II women had only 13 women bowling in the
division. By their vote, we paid only the eight women that
made it to the finals on Sunday.
At last years delegates meeting, our national sponsor Visionary
Bowling Products proposed a way to add money to the prize
funds for our tournaments. This proposal was taken to the
bowlers at the beginning of this year, and many bowlers partic-
ipated. We have 376 teams in the TCBA, figuring 5 members
per team, that equals 1880 bowlers. To date 449 bowlers have
started to participate in the ball proposal. This is less than
25% of the league. I questioned several bowlers at the tourna-
ment on their feelings toward the ball proposal, and the an-
swers I got from most of them was: What ball proposal? We
can get money added to the tournaments by purchasing a Vi-
sionary ball! Where do I sign up? Unfortunately this bowler
was from a region where I was told by the secretary, that no
one was interested. We have five regions that are over 50%
participation rate, one of which is 98%. I know we can make
this happen.
We have not scrapped the ball proposal, but time is running
out. We need your help to promote our tournaments, our
league, and our sponsor. Our goal is to reach a minimum of
50% of the bowlers to make the proposal work.
Talk to your league secretaries, and let them know that you
need to know when promotions like this one are available. If
the TCBA bowlers had responded to the Visionary ball pro-
posal at the beginning of the year, there would have been more
money in the All Star Prize fund.
