POTENTATE
CHIEF RABBAN
Nobles, Ladies and Friends,
Times are hard dealing with this covid virus and all the political negativity around us. It is easy to be-come depressed and negative ourselves. As Nobles we must present a positive friendly attitude if we want to keep our image strong and welcoming.
You know how it feels when you sit at the counter of a restaurant and a friendly waiter or waitress walks up, and though the place is swamped, still manages to make time just for you? Some have a knack for showing you are worth something to them. They ignore everyone else for thirty or forty-five seconds. They ask you how you are doing with a smile and maybe with a little smart-Aleck in them, "So what's your story?" "You having' breakfast with me this morning?" "Can I get you some coffee or juice, hon?" Some just seem to know exactly how to show the right kind of familiarity. They will call you sir, man, ma'am, darling, etc. When they sense somberness, they become automatically reverent and invisible helpers to a grieving family. They sense serious business and say to people at the begin-ning, "I'm Tina. Just give me a shout if you need anything else. I won't interrupt."
The practice of treating people the way they want to be treated requires a keen instinct-- an immediate with-it-ness, some proactive engagement, some empathy, and emotional intelligence. Most Nobles have a sincere desire and profound skill to do good for others and send them on their paths a little better than they found them. With some nourishment, affection, some warmth we can fortify another. When Nobles find ways to affect what kind of day it will be; when we are the determining factors, the deciders, the activists in making entire days better for ourselves and other people; then we will create an image for Shrine that people will take notice of and eliminate any negative connotations of our fraternity.
Sometimes as Nobles we find ourselves blundering. Consideration and courtesies get buried under our individual momentums. We become full of ourselves and powerfully expressive. We shut down our own abilities to see what others around us need. We ignore relationships. We step on people.
The principal precept in medicine is First, not to harm. When we practice to first do no harm, we learn to reflexively put ourselves in check. We look to take no action. We gather as much information as possible before involving ourselves to ensure we do not unwit-tingly make matters worse. Of course there are certain times when we know immediate, Sullenberger (the pilot of the Hudson River-landing airliner) actions are needed to avert catastrophes, but within the guideposts of routine life, it's often best for us to try to sum things up before taking action.
For our Shrine fraternity and circles of influence to progress with civility and kindness, often we need to slow our responses to en-sure appropriateness and make time to demonstrate our sincerity and care for one another. In these hard times the one thing that cannot be taken from us and that costs us nothing is the civility and kindness we can show to those around us. Thank you Nobles, for the positive friendly image you present and all your hard work this year.
Fraternally,
Mike Moore, Potentate
In July we were able to get back to Blue Lodge meetings and visit Shrine Clubs. It has been so great to see every-one again, and continue on our important mission. As has been shared with you, the Sportsman's Raffle is our one and only fundraiser for this year. Ticket sales are extremely important. Please purchase the 5 that were sent to you by mail, and help your club sell tickets to indi-viduals and at local businesses. Over $1100 in raffle tickets were sold at Theisen’s, the business where our raffle prizes were purchased, in one weekend. Mark your calendar to plan to attend the Sportsman's Raffle event on 17 October at the American Legion in Columbus Junction. It will be a great evening of fun, fellowship and WINNING.
Our Friday night Fish Fry’s in February and March were a big hit! Join us for the next one on October 3030. Helpers are always wel-come, by contacting a Divan member. Christmas party time is fast approaching. We are looking forward to seeing you at each of the Club events. Fliers will soon be available for the 2021 Potentate Trip. Now is a great time to get, or update, that necessary passport. Fraternally, Reg Hughell Chief Rabban
Fall 2020 KAABAGRAM 5
Greetings Nobles and Ladies, I trust all of you are staying safe and taking care of yourselves during these troubled and trying times. I have been able to see some of you at club meetings and the few parades that have hap-pened this year. Looking forward to "normal" times soon if there is such a thing anymore. The Nobles of Louisa Co. Shrine Club are helping in having the annual Columbus Day parade on Oct. 10 I hope we can get a lot of parade units and Shriners in attendance. Our annual Sportsman's Raffle is also coming up on the 17th of October, it is are only fundraiser this year so lets make it successful one. As always feel free to call or email me with any questions, comments or concerns. Stay safe!
Yours in faith, Mike Reschly 319-750-7997 [email protected]
ORIENTAL GUIDE
With the recent easing of some of the Covid restrictions, it has certainly been enjoyable to start
getting out to some of the clubs and units again. I have particularly enjoyed visits with the Fair-
field Shrine Club at JEB’s Park and the Louisa County Shrine Club at Pugh’s Cabin. The gener-
osity of the Nobles who have created these outdoor venues for the use of their Shrine Clubs is
simply amazing. I have also enjoyed meeting with the Legion of Honor unit and the Ft Madison
Shrine Club. I am also incredibly happy to see that our clubs and units are actively engaged in
selling tickets for the Gun Raffle coming up in October. After so many months of restrictions, the
money that Kaaba receives from the sale of these tickets is more important than ever.
Those of you who were unable to attend the Potentate’s Ball in Riverside this year, you missed a great couple of days of
fun and hospitality. I am only just now starting to realize the amount of work and planning necessary to put such an
event together, let alone having to change the date at the last minute due to the pandemic.
Now that our Blue Lodges can start doing degree work again (following the new guidance from the Board of Custodi-ans), I’d like to encourage all of our Nobles to be more visible in their Blue Lodges not only in recruitment, but also in helping out with the degree work. I have spoken to several Nobles who, after being recruited by a Shriner, did not see
him again until after he was raised and was then presented with an application to join the Shrine. I am sure that most of you know by now but there will be a Grand Master’s One-Day class in Des Moines on Oct 24th and the deadline for applications is rapidly approaching (Oct 14th).

Fall 2020 KAABAGRAM 7
Greetings Nobles, Several years I wrote an article for the Kaabagram and it as meaningful today as it was then. As we go about our daily routines whether at work or play, we must be mindful in how we are viewed by the public, co-workers, and friends. When we leave a Lodge meeting we remove our physical apron, however we are still symbolically wearing that apron when we go home and about our daily lives. The same goes when we remove our Fez and place it in its case. People still view us as Masons and Shriners, and how we comport ourselves among the public and how we carry on with each other in the Fraternity should always be on our minds. We have all taken some very solemn and serious obligations in our journey in Masonry. We should all try to live the tenants of Brotherly love, relief, and truth every day. If you have a problem or issue with a Brother or non-mason, then by all means in privacy work it out, not in the view of the public. Furthermore if any Brother observes a problem or is-sue he should do what he can to diffuse and mediate. Our Fraternity is facing more problems every day, do we really need to add more. Some facts on Chuck Norris
When Chuck Norris was in middle school, his English teacher assigned an essay: “What is courage?”
He received an A+ for turning in a blank page with only his name at the top.
Chuck Norris can pick oranges from an apple tree and make the best lemonade you’ve ever tasted.
