Rabbi’s Corner I would like to welcome Rabbi Eliot and Ann Feldman to our shul this shabbat. Rabbi Feld-man is interviewing for the position of principal at the Hebrew Academy. I met Rabbi Feldman a few weeks ago when he was here and had a lovely time talking to him. I am glad that he has re-turned and encourage you to meet him and spend some time talking to him both about his past ex-periences as well as his vision for the future of Hebrew Academy should he come here. Pesach is rapidly approaching! For those of you headed out of town already this week – tzeitchem leshalom! We will miss you here over Pesach and hope that you enjoy your holiday away. Whether you are staying or leaving, I re-mind you to please refer to the list of times when I will be available to arrange for mechirat chametz (sale of chametz) this coming week. It is very im-portant that you take advantage of the times listed. Only if you really cannot make it at any of those times should you contact me to arrange a private time to meet. This is a very busy week for all of us and it is best to make sure we catch each other at the designated times. I remind you, as well, to please submit any money you want me to distribute for Maot Chttim early so the people we distribute it to can make use of it in buying the necessary Pesach foods. Feel free to call or email with any Pesach questions (as so many of you have already done). If you can make it to my Shabbat afternoon class this week many of your questions will probably be answered and you will also have the opportunity to ask any questions you like. Shabbat Shalom Rabbi Weinberg

MAOT CHITTIM
There is an ancient custom to give charity before Pe-sach to see that all Jews have their holiday needs tak-en care of. As opposed to Matanot Le’evyonim, which can easily be taken care of on the day of Purim, Maot Chittin are needed well in advance of Pesach to allow
for proper distribution of funds. The money will be distributed to the following wor-thy causes : Jewish Family Service Food Pantry, The
JFS Kosher Food Pantry provides kosher food items, as
well as toiletries and cleaning supplies to people right
here in West Hartford experiencing financial difficulties;
& Yad Eliezer, provides chicken and supermarket vouchers to thousands of people in Israel for Pesach
with almost no overhead costs. Every year a special effort is made to raise money for
the Maot Chitim program, literally meaning “wheat money.” This program is based on the ancient custom of providing funds to help needy Jews purchase Pass-
over food.

“Insights in to the Hagaddah” By Rabbi Hillel Adler of HHNE
Monday, March 18th at 7:30 PM Looking for things to share with people at your seder?
Wondering what a certain passage is doing in the text of the Hagaddah? Rabbi Adler will share some fascinating insights in to the text of the Hagaddah and the themes of
Pesach.
SHABBAT HAGADOL DRASHA
“Friend, or Foe, Angel or Man? The Role of Eliyahu at the Seder”
Shabbat Afternoon, March 23rd at 5:15 PM Join us at YIWH to participate in the time honored tradi-tion of studying some of the laws and concepts of Pesach as well as excerpts from the Haggadah with the rabbi on the Shabbat afternoon immediately preceding Pesach.
This year we will study the message of the Passover hol-iday as expressed by the presence of the prophet Eli-
yahu at the Seder and we will discover what message it is meant to convey to us about redemption and about
ourselves. By exploring the themes of Pesach we hope to come to a richer, more meaningful celebration of the
holiday.

Parshat Vayikra Rabbi David Silverberg (www.vbm-torah.org) The Torah in Parashat Vayikra (2:13) mandates that all mincha offerings (sacrifices made from flour, as opposed to animal sacrifices) must have salt added to them. Rashi, citing from the Midrash, tells that on the second day of creation, when God created the atmosphere by separating the "lower wa-ters" from the "upper waters," the "lower waters" complained. They felt jealous of the "upper waters" which were privileged to remain in the heavens, closer to the Almighty. God appeased, as it were, the "lower waters" by assuring them that they will return heavenward by being placed upon the altar: wa-ter will be used for libations on Sukkot, while sea salt will be put on the altar with every korban mincha. What does this Midrash mean? Even if we could perhaps understand that water "returns" to God through libations, how does it return to the heavens simply by having its salt placed on the altar? (We might add that one version of this Midrash, cited in Torah Sheleima, tells that the waters were not satis-fied with God's promise of their use for libations, as these occur only on Sukkot. God therefore prom-ised that their salt would be used with menachot. It turns out, then, that the final "appeasement" to the lower waters involved specifically the salt. This perhaps amplifies the question: how does the use of salt signify the water's return to the heavens?) Rav Yaakov Kaminetzky explained the meaning behind this Midrash, as well as how the salt poured on meal offerings represents the water's return to the heavens. In truth, the lower waters ulti-mately do return to the skies, through evaporation. It is specifically the salt that remains below, on earth. God shows the "lower waters" that even that which appears to have no possibility whatsoever of ascending to the heavens can reach God. Godliness must not be confused with otherworldli-ness. Godliness relates to earthly existence; it means sanctifying life by living by a higher standard, not trying to escape. Even the salt, even the physical properties of human life, the part of a person that is bound by earthly constraints, can reach God through the altar – through the performance of His mitzvot. The salt of menachot thus symbolizes the fact that one need not join the "upper waters" to con-nect to God. Religious life challenges us to infuse the mundane with spirituality, to take the "salt," the lowest parts of human existence, and discover how to place them on the altar as an offering to God

Our membership well-exceeded the Zachs Family challenge of raising an additional $5000.00 as compared to last year, so they will be matching it with another $5000.00! We are pleased to tell you that our fundraising gala raised over $63,000!
Thank you to everyone who supported our efforts. We hope you use and enjoy your new Member-ship and Business Card Directories. It will be on our website within the next week as well.
Lastly, thank you to our wonderful and hard-working committee and volunteers: Ilana & Steve Bernstein, Rachel Cohen, Judith Hessing, Esther Glahn, Debra Luger, Jane Resnick, Rivka Sue Newman, Eli & Elie Wolfe and Vivian Zablotsky. We never could have done it without you!!
