LIVING THINGS
The characteristic of living things are :
• a. Need for food and water• b. Need oxygen to breath• c. Respond to stimuli• d. Reproduce• e. Grow and develop• f. Excrete waste• g. Need certain temperature• h. Move•

1. Requiring water, and food
Water : main substance that contained by living things body. 2/3 parts of living things body is water. Water is the temperature regulatory of living things body.
Food : main source of energy for supporting the life
• All organisms need energy to stay alive. They also need materials to make the living matter in the cells of their bodies. Organisms gain the energy and materials they need from their food
• Non living things do not required nutrition.

2. Requiring Oxygen to breath
• Oxygen : main substance is needed by living thing for respiration process

Respiration
• Respiration is : the process of breaking up food to gain energy.
Chemistry reaction of respiration :
Food + oxygen energy + carbon dioxide +
water
C6H12O6 + O2 energy + CO2 + H2O

3. Receive and respond to the stimulus / iritability
• By using the senses, living things can receive and respond the stimulus
• Animals and plants are sensitive to changes in their environment. They often react to these changes in ways which are beneficial to themselves
• Example: If you smell something un pleasant or touch something very hot, you immediately move away from it.

• Stimulus is the external factor that comes from the environment and received by living thing.
• Respond is the react from the living thing to the stimulus
• Sensitivity or irritability is response of living organisms to a stimulus

4. Reproduction
Reproducing is one of the manners for getting new generation.
All organisms are able to reproduce. In
reproduction some charactheristic are passed from parents to off spring.
29/10/2007 11
Generative Reproducing ( sexual reproducing )is the reproducing started by fertilization process
29/10/2007 12
Vegetative reproducing ( asexual reproducing ) is the reproducing not started by fertilization process.
Examples : -budding
-fission
-Fragmentation
-parthenogenesis
29/10/2007 14
Fragmentation/ regenerationBody piece grow to whole bodyExample : Phylum: Platyhelminthes
Class : Turbellaria
29/10/2007 16
Phartenogenesis
• If the new generation comes from the egg without started by fertilization process.
• Example : Honey bee

5. Grow and Develop
Growing is permanent increase in the mass and volume an organism.
Example : -Small change up to big
Short change up to long
The body of an organisms can change and become larger in size. It can also become more complex.
Developing is :the change process of living thing.
Example : menstruation in woman
produce sperm in man

6.EXCRETION
• Excretion is the discharge process of waste substance from inside the body.

7. Adaptation to the Environment
Adaptation is an effort of living thing for making the suitable condition with the environment. Example: need certain temperature.
Adaptation
divided into: Morphology adaptation
Physiology adaptation
Behavioral adaptation

8. Movement
It easier to detect movement in animals than in plants. The movement of organisms is independent of external forces such as wind or water currents.
Most animals are able to move from one place to another. Such movement is termed locomotion. Example : Horse runs
But, some animals do not have the power of locomotion. For example, corals and sponges are fixed to one place. However, they can still move parts of their bodies.

Plants move : Most plants are
unable to carry out locomotion buat parts of the plants are always moving slowly.
The flowers of plants slowly open, and their shoots ben towards light as they grow.
EXERCISE
• Now, I ask you to observe the living organisms around you. Compare them with non living things. Write down a list in a table like this:

Identify the following things based on the characteristics of the living things
Things Living Non-living Characteristics
1. Mouse
2. Wooden table
3. Snail
4. Mango fruit
5. Whiteboard
6. Fungus
7. Virus
