3.4.1Waveinterference

Whenwavesofthesamefrequencyandsimilaramplitudeoverlap,theycombine(‘superpose’)toproduceareasofconstructiveinterferenceanddestructiveinterference.Constructiveinterferenceoccurswhenwavesfromdifferentsourcesarriveatacertainpointwithzerophasedifference.Thismeansthatpeaksarrivetogetherleadingto‘superpeaks’andtroughsarrivetogetherproducing‘supertroughs’.Destructiveinterferenceoccurswhenwavesfromdifferentsourcesarriveinantiphase(180°phasedifference).Thismeansthatapeakfromonesourcewillcancelatroughfromanothersourceandviceversa.
