Meeting Common Core State StandardsThis Really Good Stuff® 4-In-A-Row Dolch Words Level 1is aligned with the following Common Core StateStandard for English Language Arts:Phonics & Word RecognitionR.F. K.3c Read common high-frequency words by sight.

OverviewTwo students spin to win by reading four words orphrases in a row. 4-In-A-Row Dolch Words Level 1offers a fun way to quickly learn 187 Dolch sight words(Pre-Primer, Primer, and Nouns), and it makes a greatliteracy station. You have enough materials for up tosix students to play with three mats and threespinners simultaneously.

Choose the game mat’s isolated word side or phrase sideto differentiate level of play. Reading sight words withincontext is a great way to improve on the sight-wordknowledge base and to build reading fluency. Becausemost sight words do not stimulate a visual image inthe reader’s mind, practicing them in common phraseshelps students attach meaning and context to otherwiseabstract words. The repeated contextualized exposure tosight words allows you to reach all readers, especiallythose struggling with word recognition or learning English.

In each of the three levels (Pre-Primer, Primer, andNouns), you have two mats—one with a heart andone with a star symbol. This offers students twopractice mats for each set of sight words and easy, at-a-glance management.

Opponents need about 10 chips each, two differentcolors. Select who starts and spin to determine whichcolor box a player reads. Players strategically choosespaces and then try to read words that align 4-In-A-Rowin any direction, including diagonally. Boxes must beadjacent or touching for 4-In-A-Row. Players may try toblock their opponent from completing a line of 4 chips.Spinning Wild! means a player may read any colored box,and players lose their turn when they spin Miss a Turn. After a player completes a line of 4 in a row, he or shesays, “4-In-A-Row!” That player must then read all thewords correctly to win. If that player does not read themall correctly, the opponent may read them, plus all of hisor her own words to become the winner. If time permits, play again.

AssessmentThe Record Sheet can be used for screening andplacement in a level (Pre-Primer: red mats; Primer: aquamats; and Nouns: blue mats) and to assess fluency.

with students. Select a student to model playing thegame with you. Choose a mat and decide whether youwill use the word-only side or the phrase side. Placethe mat in front of both of you, and sit next to eachother so you can both read the mat. Place a spinnerbetween you. 2. Demonstrate taking turns. The first player spins thespinner and then must strategically choose a spaceon the mat to read the word and place the chip. Theobject is to have 4 chips in a row. Show the studentshow they can block a potential line of 4, and thinkaloud as you make your decision on your box choice, for example, “I could read this box (pointing) to helpme get closer to my 4-In-A-Row, but if I do, myopponent will probably choose this box (pointing) toget 4-In-A-Row, so I will block (him or her) by choosingthis box.”

3. Alternate turns, reading the word(s) on the coloredbox as your spin directs and placing chips strategicallyin an effort to get 4-In-A-Row. If a player cannot readthe word or reads it incorrectly, the other player cansteal the space by reading it correctly.

4. When one player places 4 chips in a row, he or she says“4-In-A-Row!” and must then read all 4 words correctlyin order to win.

5. If that player does not read the words correctly, theother player may read them, plus his or her own words,to win.
